As the Spring sale season draws to a close, British Charolais once again returned to Carlisle for their annual Spring Show & Sale held by Harrison & Hetherington over the course of 13th-14th May 2022. The pre-sale show saw a wide range of superb animals on display, judged by Jeremy Price of the Oakchurch herd in Herefordshire and his junior judge Rory Milne from Morayshire. The sale began in earnest on the 14th May, with a total of 62 bulls and 5 heifers being sold. Bulls sold to an average price of £6487.98 with an 81% clearance, whilst females averaged £1743.
Elgin Redrum, Junior & Reserve Overall Champion, sold for 18,000gns
The top price of the day, at 18,000gns, went to the Junior and Reserve Overall Champion ELGIN REDRUM from the herd of R A Milne in Elgin, Morayshire. Redrum was sired by the ever-popular 14,000gns Westcarse Houdini, and his dam is Elgin JessieJ, a homebred daughter of former Royal Highland Show Reserve Champion Elgin Highroller. This exceptional 16-month-old will be journeying over to Hawick, Roxburghshire, where he will be introduced to the herd of winning bidder J Hepburn & Co.
Harestone Superior, Reserve Junior Champion, sold for 17,000gns
Following closely behind Redrum, at a final price of 17,000gns, was Reserve Junior Champion HARESTONE SUPERIOR from R & N Barclay in Insch, Aberdeenshire. At only 14 months old, Superior was amongst the youngest of the bulls on offer. He was sired by the 25,000gns Inverlochy Ferdie, and his dam is Harestone Brigitte – a daughter of Harestone Ronsard, who took the title of Supreme Champion at the Royal Highland Show in 2006. Winning the bid for this young lad was Kedzlie Farms Ltd. of Halifax, West Yorkshire.
Harestone Rolex, sold for 14,000gns
Reaching the next highest price of 14,000gns was 18-month-old HARESTONE ROLEX, also from the herd of R & N Barclay. Rolex was born to Alsnow Enchantress, a Blelack Roger daughter, and he was sired by Harestone Hercules. This class winner caught the eye of G & S Gilleard, who won the bid and will be taking him home to Doncaster, South Yorkshire.
Harestone RSTurbo, Intermediate Champion, sold for 13,000gns
The day’s Intermediate Champion HARESTONE RSTURBO was the next to sell, for a final price of 13,000gns. Also bred by R & N Barclay, RSTurbo combines some heavily sought-after French bloodlines – he was sired by the popular Major, and his dam is Bresiliene – a daughter of Pinay. RSTurbo will be making the trip over to Northumberland, to the holding of winning bidder J E Woodman & Son.
Marwood Robocop, Reserve Senior Champion, sold for 11,000gns
Taking the next highest price of 11,000gns was Reserve Senior Champion MARWOOD ROBOCOP, an 18-month-old from the herd of R A & J Blyth of Hartlepool, County Durham. Robocop was sired by Balthayock Lineup, who sold for 16,000gns at Stirling in 2017, and his dam is Marwood Ingo – a homebred daughter of Marwood Flyer. Taking this strapping lad home is winning bidder W Milne of Strathdon, Aberdeenshire.
Dooley Rocket, Senior & Overall Champion, sold for 10,000gns
The hammer came down three times for the next highest price of 10,000gns, firstly for the day’s Overall and Senior Champion, DOOLEY ROCKET from D Thornley of Diseworth, Leicestershire. This impressive 19-month-old is a Wesley Forceful son, and his dam Dooley Molly goes back to Falleninch Hamzoraj. Rocket is sure to go on to perform well for his new owners A & S J Forbes of Ballindalloch, Banffshire.
Ellerton Razzmatazz, sold for 10,000gns
Also selling for 10,000gns was 17-month-old ELLERTON RAZZMATAZZ, bred by A Brown of Selby, North Yorkshire. This wasn’t Razzmatazz’s first taste of success; he had previously won the title of Charolais Champion at the Driffield Show. Razzmatazz has quite the profitable lineage behind him, having been sired by the 14,000gns Westcarse Houdini, and his dam (Ellerton Marigold) is a daughter of the 17,000gns Sandelford Harrison. Winning the bid this time was P L J S Howells, who will be taking Razzmatazz back to Llanybydder, Dyfed.
Goldies Roddy, sold for 10,000gns
The final bull to sell for 10,000gns was GOLDIES RODDY, from the herd of H Goldie in Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire. Roddy was sired by Elrick Officer, a stock sire for the Goldies herd noted for short gestation and easy calving. His dam, Goldies Libby, is a daughter of the popular Blelack Digger. Roddy will be joining the Balmyle herd in Meigle, Perthshire, under the care of winning bidder W P Bruce Ltd.
Gretnahouse Rooftop, sold for 9,500gns
Reaching the next highest price of 9,500gns was GRETNAHOUSE ROOFTOP, a 20-month-old from the herd of L Houston in Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire. Rooftop was born to Gretnahouse Oluthera, a daughter of the 17,000gns Balthayock Gladiator, and he was sired by the easy-calving Wesley Equinox. Rooftop caught the eye of J C Hobday & Son, who won the bid and will be taking him home to Hawick, Roxburghshire.
Balmyle Reunion, sold for 9,000gns
Two bulls managed to secure the next highest price of 9,000gns, the first of which was BALMYLE REUNION from W P Bruce Ltd. of Meigle, Perthshire. This charming 18-month-old was sired by Balmyle Jasper, a trait leader in gestation length and growth EBVs, and his dam Balmyle Gemma is a daughter of the 30,000gns Dingle Hofmeister. Taking Reunion home is winning bidder C Leslie & Sons of Duftown, Murray.
Brailes Samson, sold for 9,000gns
Also selling for 9,000gns was 15-month-old BRAILES SAMSON from Brailes Livestock in Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire. This young lad had certainly been one to watch, having won Junior Champion at the Stars of the Future Calf Show and Interbreed Champion at Livescot 2021. Samson was sired by the 14,000gns Westcarse Houdini, and his dam is Bassett Orange, a daughter of Whitecliffe Lacroix. P S Thomas won the bid and will be taking Samson home to Caernarfon, Gwynedd.
Another from R & N Barclay, HARESTONE ROYALJAKE, took the next highest price of 8,000gns. This 16-month-old is out of Harestone Hyacinth, a Balthayock Domino daughter, and he was sired by Goldies Oasis who reached the top price of 23,000gns at Stirling in 2019. RoyalJake will soon be heading over to Dalry, Ayrshire, under the care of winning bidders R & M Wilson.
Firhills Rory, sold for 7,500gns
Finally, a trio of bulls sold for the next highest price of 7,500gns. The first of these was 17-month-old FIRHILLS RORY, bred by D Muirhead of Arbroath, Angus. Rory’s sire is the exceptionally easy calving Glenericht Mecca, and his dam Ugie Erin goes back to the 28,000gns Farleycopse Turbo. Rory will be making the journey to Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire, where he will be introduced to the hers of winning bidder Douganhill Farms.
Whitecliffe Rolex, sold for 7,500gns
Next to reach 7,500gns was WHITECLIFFE ROLEX, a strapping young 17-month-old from the herd of M & J Hayhurst in Malton, North Yorkshire. Rolex’s dam, Whitecliffe Josey, is a daughter of the renowned Blelack Digger, and his sire is the equally-popular Wesley Equinox. Rolex has quite the journey ahead of him as he travels down to Betws-y-Coed, Gwynedd, courtesy of winning bidders H C & I Roberts.
Solwayfirth Rudy, Reserve Intermediate Champion, sold for 7,500gns
Finally, also selling for 7,500gns, was the day’s Reserve Intermediate Champion, SOLWAYFIRTH RUDY from the herd of I & D Goldie of Annan, Dumfriesshire. Rudy was sired by the 11,500gns Glenericht Majestic, and his dam is Solwayfirth Heather – a Solwayfirth Bandit daughter. Rudy caught the attention of winning bidder W S L Muir, who will be taking him on the long trip back to his herd in Stromness, Orkney.
