Charolais bulls met a strong demand at the autumn Stirling sale, particularly the senior and intermediate bulls, ensuring 29 at five-figures and an average of £10,826 for 57 lots through the ring, which is up £1803 per head on the year. Some of the top priced lots went to pedigree homes, but commercial buyers were also happy to pay up to five-figures for quality bulls that are ready to work.
In a fitting end to their Charolais journey, Billy and Moira Milne, who dispersed their Strathdon-based Glenernan herd last October, led the sale of bulls at 30,000gns with their overall champion, Glenernan Angus. In fact, in 30 years of breeding Charolais, this was the first time they had received a red ticket at the pre-sale show. He was first awarded the intermediate championship, before being tapped out as overall champion by judge Will Tucker, of the Swansea-based Gower herd.

A son of Kinclune Superman – the bull that made 31,000gns at their herd dispersal – Angus is out of the Thrunton Platinum daughter Glenernan Sunrise, and sold to the Adams’ Newhouse herd at Glamis.
Bulls from the Drysdale family’s 60-cow Glenericht herd at Blairgowrie, proved extremely popular, with their reserve senior champion, Glenericht Accord, leading the stall at 28,000gns. Sired by the 8000gns Caylers Thunder, this heifer’s calf, out of Glenericht Treasuretrove, sold to Neil Blyth’s Marwood herd, Hartlepool.

Mark and Grant Smeaton’s Bombax bulls, from their 40-cow herd at Cotton of Ovenstone, Inverarity, met a strong trade, up to 24,000gns for Bombax Archer. Champion at Perth, Angus and Kirriemuir shows this summer, he is one of the first sons to be sold off the 22,000gns Balmyle Thumper, while his dam is the bought-in Goldies Paula. Final bidder on that bull was Ian Bell, Hallbankgate, Brampton.

Next best for the Drysdales was their senior and reserve overall champion, Glenericht Alfie, which made 22,000gns to J and W Kellas, Raws Farm, Dufftown. He’s another by Caylers Thunder, while the dam is Glenericht Tabby, by Glenericht Limpet.

From the same stable, Glenericht Alberto made 20,000gns to the Walter family’s Balthayock herd at Perth. He is by Glenericht Limpet, the same home-bred bull that sired the Drysdales’ 60,000 bull in February. His dam, Glenericht Neve, is by Maerdy Hwre.

Meanwhile, Bombax Apache, by the Smeatons prolific stock bull, Harestone Ronaldinho, and out of a Gretnahouse-bred dam, sold for 17,000gns to J Warnock and Sons, Dreva, Broughton.

The junior champion, Cardean Argyll, from Adrian Ivory’s Meigle-based herd, sold at 16,000gns to T and J Leslie, Shapinsay, Orkney. His sire is the 2023 Royal Highland Show champion, Ricnick Thor, and he’s one of his first sons to be offered for sale, while his dam, Cardean Peach, is by Maerdy Henley.

Not far behind, the reserve junior champion, Karyn McArthur’s Benlomond Alabama, made 15,000gns, selling to S Williamson, Breckoniehill Farm, Castle Douglas. He’s sired by Carwood Scotsman, out of the bought-in Harestone Roberta, a daughter of Maerdy Newman.

He is by Baillieston Orcadian – a bull that has previously bred sons to 28,000gns – with his dam being Thrunton Rebecca, by Glenernan Northstar. Buyer was GD Pate and Sons, Stobshiel Mains, Humbie.

The Milne family, Kennieshillock, Lhanbryde, received 11,000gns for Elgin Asterix, a second prize winning Glenericht Pegasus son, out of Elgin Rosemary, which sold to A and AP Morrison, Haddoch, Rothiemay.
John Jeffrey had two five-figure sellers from his Kelso-based Kersknowe herd, with Kersknowe Achilles selling at 11,000gns to J Lang and Son, Parkerstone, Newmills. Full of home-breeding, he’s by Kersknowe Simon, out of Kersknowe Poodle, which is a daughter of Kerknowe Jake.

The Leggats at Bonnykelly, New Pitsligo, sold to 10,000gns, with Bonnykelly Viking making that money to T Smith and Son, Netherton, Alford. He’s by the 9000gns Glenericht Rambler, out of Bonnykelly Sarah.
The Drysdales’ Glenericht Acer, a twin-born bull by Caylers Oxford, out of the Carwood Lochness daughter, Glenericht Olga, sold at 10,000gns to GH Sinclair and Son, Nottingham Mains, Latheron, Caithness.
Back with the Bombax team, Bombax Apollo, by Harestone Ronaldinho and out of Bombax Tilly, reached 10,000gns to FT Walton, Flotterton, Thropton.

An elite sale of select Charolais females began with Hamish Goldie selling a ‘buyer’s choice’ of any 2025 or 2026-born heifer from his renowned Goldies herd at Mouswald. Paying 30,000gns for that opportunity was Gordon Kemp, Waterside, Forbes, Alford.
The same buyer paid 18,000gns for Lagavaich Violet, a two-year-old Thurso Sebastian daughter from Billy and Gary Wright’s Glenlivet-based herd. Her dam is Lagavaich Orla, a Woodpark Elgin daughter.
Three others made 10,000gns, including the Milnes’ yearling heifer, Elgin Andrina, a Falleninch Stormzy daughter, out of another Woodpark Elgin daughter, Elgin Ovette. She sold to Millar Farms, North Lurg, Midmar.
Also at 10,000gns was Vince Corbett’s Teme Aria, a 20-month-old daughter of Maerdy Morwr, out of Teme Stardust, a past reserve champion at the Royal Welsh. She went to JG Lewis and Sons, Oaklands, Abergavenny.
The other at 10,000gns was Brownhill Aoife, from the Devine Brother, Strabane, Co Tyrone. Reserve junior champion at the NI National show in Clogher, this 15-month-old is by Kilvilcorris Royal and out of the Invictus daughter, Coolnaslee Olk. Buyer was RT Watkins, New House, Abergavenny.
