Hamish Goldie’s overall champion led the trade at the Charolais Society’s spring show and sale at Carlisle, where a steady demand saw 40 bulls sell to average £7941, while five females levelled out at £5985.
Making the top price of 18,000gns was Goldies Vodka, which had earlier been tapped out as senior male and overall champion by the judge Stuart Wilson. Continuing a hugely successful run for the Dumfries-based Goldies herd, this 20-month-old is another son of the 28,000gns Falleninch Stormzy, which has now bred numerous five-figure priced sons, up to 30,000gns. His dam, Goldies Tetley, is a daughter of Caylers Rocky, the bull that sired Hamish’s champion and 75,000gns seller at the Stirling sale in February. Vodka heads to Wales, selling to Kevin Thomas’ Moelfre herd.
Goldies Vodka
The second-prize winner, Whitecliffe Viking, from the Hayhurst family, Great Carr, Malton, was the first of two bulls to make 14,000gns. A double F94L carrier, this two-year-old is by the home-bred Thrunton Fairfax son, Whitecliffe Pearce, while the dam, Whitecliffe Rhys is by Whitecliffe Highlight. He was knocked down to G McClanachan and Sons, Gairloch, Dumfries.
The other bull at 14,000gns was the first prize winner, Marwood Vardy, a 17-month-old from the Blyths’ Hartlepool-based herd. Another full of home-breeding, his sire is Marwood Thor, by Maerdy Gouverneur, while his dam is the Balthayock Lineup daughter Marwood Paris. He sold to CA Smith, Wester Coull, Tarland, Aboyne.
Marwood Vardy
Making 11,500gns was Newhouse Vodka, a Ballinlare Phantom son from the Adam family, Newhouse of Glamis, Forfar. This 18-month-old, out of Newhouse Pimms, a daughter of Brampton Nacodar, sold to EJ Ward and Sons, Intack, Nether Kellet, Carnforth.

The reserve intermediate champion, Elgin Vice, from the Milne family, Kennieshillock, Elgin, reached 11,000gns, selling to Andrew Ewing, Dumbretton, Annan. He’s another son of Falleninch Stormzy, which the Milnes bought jointly with the Goldies, Allanfauld and Harestone herds, and his full brother had sold for 14,000gns at Stirling. His dam is the Caylers Noah daughter, Elgin Rhianna.
Elgin Vice
The final five-figure seller was Tweeddale Vandal, a 19-month-old from Jonathan Watson, Bowsden Moor, Berwick Upon Tweed. Sired by Fleurieu Napoleon, this one is a heifer’s calf, out of Tweeddale Tranquil, which is a daughter of Balthayock Impression. He went at 10,000gns to EJ and AM Fox, St Johns Kirk, Biggar.
Tweeddale Vandal
The reserve senior champion, Burradon Vibrant, made 9500gns for Chris Curry, Low Burradon, Morpeth. At 22-months-old, this boy is by McCornick Saltire and out of the Puntabrava Federico-sired Burradon Monica. He sold to Liam Muir, Upper Onston, Orkney.
Not far behind, at 9200gns, was Wensleydale Vince, from Chris Timm, Seaton Ross, York. A third prize winner in his class, he is by the 50,000gns Barnsford Thistle, out of the Balthayock Nominee daughter, Wensleydale Sarah. He went to T and T Coltman, Laggansarroch, Pinmore, Girvan.
Another third prize winner from the same home, Wensleydale Viper, sold at 8500gns to RI and VA Telford, High Park, Roadhead, Carlisle. Also by Barnsford Thistle, he is out of the Balthayock Nominee daughter, Wensleydale Rihanne.
The Hayhursts received 8500gns for their fourth prize winner, Whitecliffe Vandyke, a Whitecliffe Priceless son out of the Wesley Equinox-sired Whitecliffe Roberta. That17-month-old was another to sell to CA Smith, Wester Coull, Aboyne.
The intermediate and reserve overall male champion, Elgin Valour, made 8000gns for the Milne family, selling to Pallathorpe Farm, Bolton Perch, York. Another son of Falleninch Stormzy, he is out of the Harestone Oscar daughter, Elgin Scarlett.
Elgin Valour
Kevin Thomas’ Moelfre Alex, also made 8000gns, selling to K Lumley, Newbiggin, Consett. A show winner at the Welsh multi-breed calf show, he is by Anside Foreman and out of Moelfre Manon, a Balmyle Impression-sired cow.
The junior champion, Caylers Alfie, from Caylers Charolais, Nuthampstead, was another to make 8000gns. Sired by Newlogie Torpedo and out of the Maerdy Ignition daughter, Caylers Oatmeal, that one sold to Paul Tippetts, Lodge Hill, Shifnal.
Caylers Alfie
The reserve female champion led the female trade at 9000gns. That was Annanview Ambrose, a 16-month-old heifer from Kevin Watret, Maulscastle, Annan. Charolais champion at last year’s English Winter Fair, this Harestone Monarch daughter is out of the Maerdy Newman-sired Harestone Royalgem. She sold to Nicola Watkins, Pentre Quarry, Abergavenny.
The same buyer paid 7000gns for the female champion and reserve overall animal, Annanview Arabella, again from Kevin Watret. She’s by the 10,000gns Harestone Standfast and out of Swalesmoor Maya, a daughter of Balmyle Headline.
