May 6, 2026 Stirling Bull Sale May 2026

Competitive bidding for the best of the bulls ensured a top of 15,000gns, with a further seven making five-figure prices, at the United Auctions’ May sale of Charolais in Stirling. A more selective trade saw 24 lots sell through the ring, averaging out at £8591.

It was Bombax Van Dyke, a 17-month-old bull in the top 1% of the breed for daily liveweight gain, that secured the lead price of 15,000gns for the Smeaton family, Cotton of Ovenstone, Forfar. He is by the successful stock bull, Harestone Ronaldinho, which was bought jointly back in 2022 for 24,000gns and has sired several five-figure bulls, up to 20,000gns. Out of the Maerdy Osgood daughter, Bombax Scarlet – one of 30 cows in the Smeatons’ herd – Van Dyke sold to AJ MacLean, Heylipol, Tiree.

The overall breed champion, judged by Tom Gatherer of the Barnsford herd, was Maerdy Vector, a 21-month-old from Esmor Evans, Monfa, Mold, which made the second top price of 13,000gns. Full of home-breeding, he’s by Maerdy Offenback, while his dam, Maerdy Swansong, is a full sister to the dam of the 40,000gns Maerdy Newman. Vector sold to pedigree and commercial breeder, Peter Donger, Seawell, Towcester.

Next best, the third prize winner, Corrie Vindiesel reached 11,000gns for Duncan and Ashley MacGregor, Burnhead, Kilsyth. He’s a son of Balthayock Lachlan, which was used on loan from the Teiglum herd, while his dam, Corrie Lilo, is a Gavinburn Harry daughter that also bred the 10,000gns Corrie Stampede. He was knocked down to Liam Muir, buying for Yarpha Farms, Orkney.

Allen Drysdale, Middle Drimmie, Blairgowrie, received 10,500gns for his second prize winner, Glenericht Vibrant, which went to PR and MA Hooper, Trefrawl, Cornwall. His sire is Caylers Oxford, a bull that’s previously sired sons to 20,000gns, while the dam, Glenericht Gem, is a Clyth Diplomat daughter that has produced sons to 25,000gns.

Newlogie Vintage, a two-year-old bull from AJR Farms, Ellon, was the first of four bulls to hit the 10,000gns mark. A son of the French-bred Newlogie Toyota, he’s out of the Maerdy Morwr daughter, Newlogie Roxette, one of 45 cows in the herd. That one sold to A and J Craig, Craigton, Castle Douglas.

The Campbell family’s third prize winner, Thrunton Verdi, from their Alnick-based herd, made 10,000gns to A Sinclair, Stitley, Thurso. His sire is the 26,000gns Rutherston Sonny, while the dam is one of 70 cows in the herd, Thrunton Nataline, by Thrunton Gladiator.

Another third prize winner, Lakelady Victor, made 10,000gns for young Alba and Jess Malone, brought out by their parents Craig and Teen Malone at Pitcairn, Cardenden, Fife. A son of Balthayock Musketeer, his dam is Gretnahouse Tusilla, a Lochend Nighthawk daughter that was bought for the girls by their Grandad, Iain Millar, at the Gretnahouse dispersal. He sold to J Collier and Sons, Dullomuir, Blairadam, Kelty.

The final 10,000gns seller was the reserve junior champion, Elgin Vagabond, a son of the 28,000gns Falleninch Stormzy, from Matthew Milne, Kennieshillock, Elgin. Out of the Carwood Lochness-sired Elgin Olwen, he was knocked down to Messrs Roberts and Jones, Parc, Llangadfan, Welshpool.

Bombax Virgil, another from the Smeaton family, stood second in its class and went onto make 9000gns, to Orkney buyer Liam Muir. A son of the 12,000gns Glenericht Ryder, he is out of Balthayock Oklahoma, by Balthayock Impression.

The reserve overall champion was the Caylers Rocky son, Goldies Valiant, from Hamish Goldie, Mouswald, which sold at 8000gns to P and M Watson, Darnford, Banchory. His dam, Goldies Rejoice, is by Kersknowe Jambo.
