The exceptional demand for quality Charolais bulls continued at the Welshpool spring show and sale, where averages rose by £3289 on the year, resulting in a centre record average of £8749 for 40 bulls sold.

The pre-sale show was judged by Andrew Adam of the Newhouse and Glamis herds in Perthshire, and it was his choices of champion and reserve that later claimed the top two prices, selling at 14,000gns apiece. Taking the overall champion ticket was the 18-month-old Solo Unwin, from C and R Currell, Brynawelon Farm, Meidrim. Sired by Myerscough Phantom, and out of the Tweeddale Lookout daughter, Solo Olympia, he was knocked down to Evans Corfield and Son, Pervin Farm, Ludlow.

Making the same money was the reserve champion, Esgob UFO, from Gareth Jones, Hafod Yr Esgob Uchaf, Gwynedd. His sire is the 14,000gns Solwayfirth Peterpan, bought at Stirling in 2021, while the dam is Esgob Goldengirl, by Anside Excalibur. Final bidder was WRP Jones, Ysguboriau, Tywyn, Gwynedd.

It was a successful sale for the Corbett family of Felindre, Knighton, Powys, with all three of their bulls selling at five-figure prices. Leading the way, at 13,000gns, was their fifth prize winner, Teme Upendi, a 17-month-old shapely bull by Lochend Shell, out of the Gretnahouse Oleander daughter, Teme Sally. He sold to M Williams, Parcybryncelyn, Pentraeth.

Reaching 12,500gns, was the second prize winner, Caylers Urban, from the Barker family’s Nuthampstead-based herd. Selling to J and P Owens, Woodhouse, Leominster, this one is sired by the £10,000 private purchase, Glenericht Pogba, while the dam, Caylers Ribbon, is by Rosanna Jupiter.

Selling at 12,000gns to C and SF Thomas, Hurstley Court, Kinnersley, was the Corbetts’ Teme Ultimate, another Lochend Shell son, this time out of Teme Ooth, which is a daughter of Blelack Blackberet.

Meanwhile, Trefaldwyn Urgent, a 16-month-old bull from RA Owen, Llwyn Y Gog, Welshpool, made 10,500gns, selling to EL, TG and MJB Jones, Mynachlog Uchaf, Llandysul. He’s a son of the 10,000gns Balthayock Rory, and out of the Goldies Jasper daughter, Trefaldwyn Passion.

From the same home, Trefaldwyn Ulric, was the first of two bulls to hit the 10,000gns mark. Another by Balthayock Rory, his dam, Trefaldwyn Scarlet, is by Oakchurch Maximus. Buyer of that one was RI and G Davies, Penlanlwyd, Llangammarch Wells.

The final five-figure seller was the Corbetts’ Teme Ultrawhite, yet another Lochend Shell son, which sold for 10,000gns to PL Heard, Yelland, Oakhampton. His dam is Teme Magnolia, by Shraden Osram.

Making 9800gns was the last bull in the catalogue, Hendy Vulcan, a third prize winner from JAW Rees, Nantyrhendy, Llangurig, Powys, which sold to KA and SE Davies, Maesclettwr, Erwood, Builth Wells. Sired by Whitecliffe Rocket, he is out of the Tweeddale Lookout daughter, Hendy Ophelia.

Four bulls sold at the 9500gns mark, including the fourth prize winner, Chameran Uturn, from Highfields Park Farm, Withyham, Sussex. He is sired by the 26,000gns Goldies Romeo and out of Chameran Nerine, a Ratoary Ferguson daughter. He was knocked down to RA Evans, Tyddyn Mawr, Dolgellau.

Messrs Roberts and Jones, Parc, Llangadfan, Welshpool, sold their 18-month-old bull, Montgomery Ukraine, for 9500gns to ED and HJ Roberts, Pantgwyn, Dolfor, Newtown. His sire is the 9000gns Gretnahouse Sunrise, while his dam, Montgomery Nerys, is by Balmyle Harlequin.
Another from the Trefaldwyn herd, Trefaldwyn Upmost, sold at 9500gns, to W Evans, Lowlands, Tenby. This Balthayock Rory son is out of the Blelack Digger-sired cow, Trefaldwyn Pearl.

The final 9500gns seller was JAW Rees’ Hendy Vendetta, a Whitecliffe Rocket son out of the Lisnagre Nero-sired Hendy Racquel. He went to JE and SJ Roberts, Pantybriallu, Castle Caereinion.

Four bulls sold at 9000gns, including the second prize winner, Maerdy Ubeat, from Esmor Evans, Monfa, Mold. Full of home breeding, this son of Maerdy Figaro, out of the Blelack Fabulous daughter, Maerdy Niceone, sold to RGB and AM Tucker, Stoneaway, Horton, Gower.

Kevin Thomas also received 9000gns for his first prize winner, Moelfre Unbelievable, a Balthayock Rambo son, out of the Thrunton Nugget-sired Moelfre Razzmatazz. He sold to RBW Hughes, Dolhelfa Ganol, Llangurig.
A few lots later, Gareth Jones sold the third prize winner Esgob Universal at 9000gns to GJ Thomas, Bronllwyd Fawr, Pwllheli. That Solwayfirth Peterpan son is out of Esgob Rose, a Caylers Hustler daughter.
And, JAW Rees’ fourth prize winner, Hendy Underdog, sold at 9000gns to RG Jenkins, Cilhaul, Trefeglwys, Caersws. Another by Whitecliffe Rocket, he is out of the Sandelford Gucci daughter, Hendy Luscious.
