The National Charolais Show was this year held at the Great Yorkshire in Harrogate, with a top-class entry judged by Northern Ireland’s Trevor Phair, of the Brogher herd.
Larahill Violet
Continuing her winning run, it was Michael and Melanie Alford’s Larahill Violet that took the female title, before lifting the overall championship. This two-year-old heifer was champion at the Royal Cornwall and the Three Counties shows, before taking the female and reserve overall tickets at last month’s Royal Highland. Bred by John O’Connor and bought by the Alfords last year at Carrick-on-Shannon, she’s sired by Neptune, and out of the Balmyle Vagabond daughter, Ballydownan Maggie.
Goldstar Ulysses
It was the male champion that stepped up to take the reserve overall spot. That was Goldstar Ulysses, a rising three-year-old bull from Thor Atkinson, Arradfoot, Plumpton, Cumbria. He’s also no stranger to success, having won the breed and inter-breed championships at Staffordshire County and South of England shows, earlier in the season, along with the breed and reserve inter-breed awards at Devon County. Another son of Neptune, he is out of the Nadal daughter Goldstar Scarlette.
Caylers Umbrella
Reserve female champion was Caylers Umbrella, a three-year-old from Will Glover’s Starlight herd in Somerset. She’s a daughter of the £10,000 Glenericht Pogba, out of Caylers Lara, by Thrunton Goldeneye. She was also reserve female champion at the Three Counties Show, in June.
Taking the reserve male spot was the four-year-old bull, Barnsford Thistle, from Chris Timm, of the Wenseydale herd in York. Sired by the 17,000gns Elgin Jagger and out of the Elrick Uranium daughter, Alwent Broom, he had been bought for 50,000gns from Tom and Sheena Gatherer, in October, 2023.
