Trent and Tattoo Break Record for Joint Top Price

A bright autumn day kicked off the annual Show and Sale at Welshpool Livestock Market on Thursday 9th November 2023. Five strong classes of bulls were judged by Andrew Clark of the Teiglum herd, Lanarkshire, along with his shadow judge, Eva Jones. A total of 25 bulls and 6 females were sold after the show, with the bulls reaching an average price of £5,087.06, which is up on last year’s sale by £504.19. Our Overall Champion, Wissington Trent and 2nd in his class, Esgob Tattoo established a new record for joint top price at Welshpool of 11,000gns.

The day’s trading saw 12 lots at selling at 5,000gns or more. This included two Graiggoch females who achieved 1st and 2nd in the heifer class, Graiggoch Realdiamond and Graiggoch Showwinner, who sold for 5,000gns each. The 6 females sold to an average of £3,850 and 100% clearance rate.

Wissington Trent, Overall Champion, sold for 11,000gns

Our Overall Champion, Wissington Trent, sold for the joint top price of 11,000gns, homebred by Mrs J Rix of Wissington herd, Essex. This 21-month-old bull was sired by Wissington Observer and his dam is the Thrunton Hammerstein daughter, Wissington Nicole. The winning bid was secured by E Vaughan, who will be taking this promising bull home to Staffordshire.

Esgob Tattoo, 2nd in Class 4, sold for 11,000gns

The 17-month-old, Esgob Tattoo, also claimed the top price of 11,000gns. Tattoo was 2nd in his class, bred by Mr G M Jones of the Esgob herd, Gwynedd. This son of Solwayfirth Peterpan was born out of Esgob Nen, a daughter of Goldstar Gentleman who was a trait leader for his 200-day weight EBVs. Taking home this young bull to Mid Glamorgan is winning bidder, Williams & Partners.

Waldencourt Trojan, 1st in Class 3, sold for 7,800gns

The hammer came down twice for the next highest price of 7,800gns. Waldencourt Trojan, an 18-month-old bull by Mr S Hookway of Waldencourt herd, Gloucestershire. Trojan’s dam, Waldencourt Opotki, is a daughter of the 19,000gns Corrie Alan, and his is the popular AI bull, Balthayock Musketeer. R E Dawson will be taking this impressive young bull back to their Dawson herd in Leicestershire.

Brampton Topper, 2nd in Class 1, sold for 7,800gns

Brampton Topper also secured the second highest price of 7,800gns, coming 2nd in his class. Bred by Mr W G Turner of Brampton herd, North Yorkshire, this 20-month-old bull is a son of Border Jamboree, and out of dam, Brampton Louise, a homebred daughter of the easy-calving, Brampton Hamish. Topper caught the eye of winning bidder, E G Morgan, who takes him back with them to Powys.

Trefaldwyn Trilby, sold for 7,500gns

This 17-month-old bull bred by Mr R A Owen, Trefaldwyn herd, Powys, achieved the next highest bid of 7,500gns. Trefaldwyn Trilby was sired by Oakchurch Maximus, a trait leader in 200-day weight EBVs, and his dam, Trefaldwyn Inca, goes back to the well-known sire, Goldies Eddy. Securing the final bid for this young lad was R W Owen, Gwynedd.

Sarkley Tomos, 4th in Class 4, sold for 7,000gns

Sarkley Tomos is an 18-month-old bull bred by E H Pennie & Son, Sarkley herd, Powys, and sold to a big of 7,000gns. Tomos was sired by the French AI bull Plexus, and his dam, Sarkley Poneeka, is a daughter of the 25,000gns Inverlochy Ferdie. This strapping young bull was secured by winning bidder, J Hunter who will take him back to the Hunters herd in Aberdeenshire.

Esgob Tristan, 1st in Class 2, sold for 5,800gns

Selling for 5,800gns was Esgob Tristan, another bull by Mr G M Jones, Esgob herd, Gwynedd. This 19-month-old bull was also sired by Solwayfirth Peterpan and from dam, Esgob Olena, was sired by the 12,000gns Caylers Hustler. Tristan will be heading over to his new home in Powys with L L Morgan.

Esgob Tango, sold for 5,500gns

Tattoo and Tristan’s brother, Esgob Tango secured the next highest bid of 5,500gns. Tango’s dam, Esgob Hiphop, goes back to the 26,000gns Anside Excalibur. Also sired by Solwayfirth Peterpan, this 17-month-old bull bred by Mr G M Jones’ Esgob herd was won by successful bidder B & M Frost, Derbyshire.

Hendy Tyrant, 3rd in Class 1, sold for 5,200gns

Hendy Tyrant achieved the next highest bid of 5,200gns, a  20-month-old bull bred by Mr J A W Rees of Hendy herd, Powys. This young bull was sired by Balthayock Musketeer and out of Hendy Primose, a Lisnagre Nero daughter. Tyrant heads back to Powys with winning bidder, J G & M W A Clayton.

Moelfre Trystan, 3rd in Class 4, sold for 5,000gns

Taking the next top price of 5,000gns was 17-month-old Moelfre Trystan. Bred by Mr K J Thomas of Moelfre herd, Carmarthenshire, Trystan’s dam, Moelfre Mali, was sired by the 12,500gns Balmyle Impression. Trystan’s sire is the 13,000gns Thrunton Nugget, and he now heads home to Straniff herd, County Fermanagh with successful bidder A T Fiddis.

Moelfre Tarzan, Reserve Overall Champion

Trystan’s brother, Moelfre Tarzan was the day’s Reserve Overall Champion, a 16-month-old bull bred by Mr K J Thomas, Moelfre herd, Carmarthenshire. Tarzan’s dam, Moelfre Natalie, is a daughter of the 12,500gns Balmyle Impression and his sire is the 13,000gns Thrunton Nugget.

Graiggoch Showwinner, 2nd in Class (L) and Graiggoch Realdiamond, 1st in Class, (R) who sold for 5,000gns each

First in the heifer class, Graiggoch Realdiamond achieved 1st and this 3-year old female sold for 5,000gns. Bred by Mr G Jones of Graiggoch herd, Conwy, Realdiamond was sired by the 40,000gns Maerdy Newman, and her dam, Graiggoch Immaculate is a daughter of the 26,000gns Balmyle Dickler. She is now heading to Omagh to Mrs Eileen Hanna’s herd.

Coming close in second was Graiggoch Showwinner, a 23-month old female who also sold to 5,000gns and was bred by Mr G Jones of Graiggoch herd, Conwy. Sired by the impressive £25,000 Maerdy Morwr, Showwinner’s dam is a daughter of the 70,000gns Barnsford Ferny. She finds her new home in Cheshire on the farm of Boden and Davies.
