Gorteade Storms To the Top at Swatragh
Friday 21st April marked the return of Charolais animals to Swatragh Livestock Market for the Northern Ireland Charolais Club’s annual Spring show and sale, expertly judged by Young Judge Erin Quigley, and kindly sponsored this year by Moore Concrete. The sale saw a total of 16 bulls change hands, to an average price of £5171.25 – up £1008 on last April’s sale – with a 59% clearance. One heifer was also forward for sale, reaching a final price of 3,100gns.
Taking the top price of the evening, at 9,400gns, was the day’s Senior and Reserve Overall Champion Gorteade Storm, from J McKeagney’s Maghera-based herd. Storm is by the 22,000gns Newhouse Bigal, and his dam Lisnalurg03 Jillian is a daughter of the Irish AI bull Prime Roberto. Securing the winning bid for this strapping 19-month-old was R Peadlow of Lurgan, Co. Armagh.
The next highest price of 9,200gns was secured by Junior and Overall Champion Slievemore Tyson from the herd of S Bradley in Omagh, Co. Tyrone. Tyson was born to Slievemore Niamh, who goes back to the 70,000gns Barnsford Ferny, and he was sired by the Irish-born Noble Prince. Like Storm before him, Tyson also caught the attention of R Peadlow, who was the final bidder and will be taking both bulls back to his holding in Lurgan.
Reserve Junior Champion Coolnaslee Starman from J Crawford managed to reach the next highest price of 6,600gns. This 17-month-old was sired by the Irish-born AI bull Goldstar Hugo2, and his dam Coolnaslee Danielle is a daughter of the ever-popular Oldstone Egbert. As the hammer came down, S McKendry of Coleraine, Co. Londonderry was the successful bidder for this young lad.
The day’s Reserve Senior Champion Stranagone Starboy from R McWilliams’ Maghera-based herd achieved the next highest price of 5,600gns. This 18-month-old is out of Stranagone Erin, another Oldstone Egbert daughter, and he was sired by Lochend Apache. When the hammer fell, it was once again R Peadlow of Lurgan who was the winning bidder for Starboy.
Two bulls reached the next highest price of 5,000gns, the first of which was 18-month-old Carnview Sniper, bred by J McGuigan of Maghera, Co. Londonderry. Sniper was sired by the Irish-born Noble Prince, and his dam Balbithan Hyacinth is a daughter of the 12,000gns Newhouse Benson. Winning the bid and taking this young bull home was K & I Dickson of Downpatrick, Co. Down.
Also selling for 5,000gns was 14-month-old Innisrush Trident from W Whyte’s Portglenone-based herd. This young bull was sired by Balthayock Musketeer and out of Innisrush Peach, a daughter of the easy-calving Stranagone Jones. Trident also caught the eye of K & I Dickson of Downpatrick, who made the final bid and added him to their purchases of the day.
Finally, the day’s Female Champion Keadyview Treasa sold for a final price of 3,100gns. Treasa was bred by B O’Kane of Coleraine, Co. Londonderry, and is by Maerdy Obama. Treasa’s dam, Gallaran Nicole, is a daughter of the popular easy-calver Blelack Digger. Securing the final bid for this sweet 11-month-old heifer was T & D Harrison who will be taking her home to their holding in Mickley, Northumberland.
