Welshpool Spring Sale Sets New Centre Record with 16,000gns Top Price and 14 Five-Figure Bulls
A new centre record was set at the Welshpool spring sale, with trade peaking at 16,000gns and a further 13 bulls making five-figure prices. In all, seven more bulls were sold compared to last year’s fixture, with 47 lots averaging out at £8362.
Leading the way at 16,000gns was the first prize winner Solo Velocity, a 21-month-old from C and R Currell, Brynawelon, Meidrim. A double F94L carrier, he is sired by Myerscough Phantom and out of the home-bred Woodpark Elgin daughter, Solo Sugar. He was knocked down to Mr Williams, Gwythrian, Aberdaron, Gwynedd.
Next best at 15,000gns was Beanhill Vitality, a 17-month-old son of Tweeddale Ringmaster, from RJ and BE Kimber, Beanhill, Chippenham. A third prize winner in his class, this one is out of the Alwent Goldbar-sired Beanhill Leona. He sold to R Jones and Son, Gwarllan, Pen Pentre, Brecon.
Making 14,000gns, Trefaldwyn Vinniejones was the first of a string of five-figure sellers from RA Owen, Llwyn Y Gog, Welshpool. At 18-months-old, he is a son of Balthayock Rory, out of the Blelack Digger daughter, Trefaldwyn Rhian. This fourth prize winner went to J and B Vaughan, Sychtyn, Welshpool.
Also hitting the 14,000gns mark was Moelfre Van, from Kevin Thomas, Llechwedd, Capel Iwan, Carmarthenshire. He’s sired by the 15,000gns Glenericht Springer, while the dam, Moelfre Novello, is by Balmyle Impression. A second prize winner in his class, this one sold to E Jones, Llys Gwynt, Llanddeiniolen.
Another from RA Owen’s team, Trefaldwyn Vault made 13,000gns, selling to DCM Andrew, Neuadd Ucha, Welshpool. A fifth prize winner, also sired by the 10,000gns Balthayock Rory, his dam, Trefaldwyn Ritz, is by Oakchurch Maximus.
At the pre-sale show, judge Bruce Campbell of the Thrunton herd, selected Hendy Victorious, from JAW Rees, Nantyrhendy, Llanidloes, as his overall champion. A 17-month-old Whitecliffe Rocket son, out of the Gerard daughter, Hendy Rihanna, he sold for 12,000gns to AJ, JM, RE and RJ Abberley, Cerrigcroes, Llanyre, Powys.
Another 12,000gns seller was RA Owen’s Trefaldwyn Vice, sired by Balthayock Rory and out of the Blelack Digger daughter Trefaldwyn Pearl. That one went to W Evans, Lowlands, Redberth.
Esgob Virginian, a first prize winner from Gareth Jones, Cwmtirmynach, Gwynedd, reached 12,000gns to J Jones, Nantybarcud, Llanuwchllyn, Gwynedd. His sire is the 14,000gns Solwayfirth Peterpan, while his dam, Esgob Olena, is by Caylers Hustler.
The final 12,000gns seller was Caylers Axel, a first prize winning junior bull from the Barker family, Nuthampstead. He’s a son of Goldstar Simon, out of the Westcarse Houdini-sired Caylers Outlook. AT 15-months-old, he sold to DM Tudor, Llwyncrwn, Gwynedd.
Another from Kevin Thomas, the second prize winner, Moelfre Vaughan, sold for 11,000gns to RJ Roberts, Dysefin, Llanegryn. This 18-month-old is by Elgin Jagger – sire of sons to 50,000gns – while the dam, Moelfre Trysor, is a Thrunton Nugger daughter.
Also making 11,000gns was Hendy Alcapone, a 15-month-old from JAW Rees, which had stood second in its class. He’s by Whitecliffe Rocket, out of Hendy Patience, a daughter of Lisnagre Nero. That one sold to JE and SJ Roberts, Pantybriallu, Welshpool.
Kevin Thomas’ Moelfre Vegas was the first of three bulls to hit the 10,000gns mark. A first prize winner, he’s another by Elgin Jagger, while the dam, Moelfre Roulade, is by Thrunton Nugget. Buyer was PL Heard, Yelland Farm, Oakhampton.
Trefaldwyn Vance, again from RA Owen, sold at 10,000gns to OD Roberts, Moel Iwrch, Uchaf. This 17-month-old Balthayock Rory son is out of the Goldies Eddy daughter, Trefaldwyn Moli.
Last of the 10,000gns bulls was the 15-month-old Hendy Apostle, from JAW Rees. A Whitecliffe Rocket son, out of the Lisnagre Nero-sired Hendy Teleri, he stood third in his class and went onto sell to JT and SIA Abberley and Son, Llewetrog, Builth Wells.
The reserve overall champion was Esmor Evans’ Maerdy Vaux, an 18-month-old by Maerdy Leopard, out of the Maerdy Jakstar daughter, Maerdy Realto. He made 8000gns to DL, LE and WM Davies, Abbey Farm, Llangollen.
Females sold to a top of 5000gns, for DH Knox’s two-year-old heifer, Drumshane Vogue, an Elgin Oliver daughter, out of Battleford Snowball. She sold to F and DA Owen, Trewern, Llandegley.
