October 19, 2022 Stirling Sale 16th-18th October 2022

Falleninch Takes Stirling By Storm

Judge: Duncan MacGregor
Junior Judge: Annabelle Howell

The Stirling Bull Sales kicked off on Sunday 16th October, beginning with the show of Charolais animals expertly judged by Duncan MacGregor of the well-known Corrie herd. The sale followed on Monday 17th October, with 84 bulls changing hands, to a top price of 28,000gns and an average price of £7467.50 with an 82% clearance.

Commenting on the sale, Chairman Allen Drysdale said “This was an incredible sale for everyone involved in the breed with an improvement of 21 more bulls sold when compared to 2021’s October sale – this equates to a whopping 33% increase in the number of bulls sold and a 7% increase in clearance rate. The facts are there to see in black and white, with Charolais sired suckled calves topping the markets week in week out throughout the country. Commercial farmers are striving to produce the most efficient animal that will leave them the best return on their capital, this being a Charolais.”

Following the bull sale, 13 females were sold – including a draft of quality heifers from the Caithness herd. Finally, proceedings closed with the dispersals of the renowned Lochend and Ravensworth herds, which reached top prices of 21,000gns and 8,500gns respectively.

Falleninch Stormzy, Reserve Junior Champion, sold for 28,000gns

Taking the top price, at 28,000gns, was the day’s Reserve Junior Champion – Falleninch Stormzy from A B Hornall of the Falleninch herd in Stirlingshire. This wasn’t Stormzy’s first taste of success; he had previously attained the title of Charolais Junior Champion at the Royal Highland Show earlier in the year. This impressive 17-month-old was sired by the well-known 70,000gns Barnsford Ferny, and his dam is Falleninch Orla, a homebred daughter of Falleninch Imperator. Stormzy was purchased under a 4-way joint ownership agreement between R A Milne & Sons, Elgin herd; R & N Barclay, Harestone herd; A MacGregor, Allanfauld herd; and H Goldie, Goldies herd.

Rutherston Sonny, Senior Champion, sold for 26,000gns

Close behind Stormzy, at 26,000gns, was the Senior Champion Rutherston Sonny from the herd of A Anderson of the Rutherston herd in Angus. Sonny had previously found success in the Junior Bull Interbreed Championships at the Perth Show 2022, and boasts impressive 400- and 600-day weight EBVs of +88 and +103 respectively. This growthy lad is a son of Balmyle Oscar, and his dam Rutherston Jenna is by Alwent Goldbar – a trait leader in 200-, 400-, and 600-day weight EBVs. Sonny was also purchased under a joint ownership, this time going to J H C Campbell & Sons of the Thrunton herd, and R A & J Blyth of the Marwood herd.

Glenericht Superb, Overall Male Champion, Intermediate Champion & Group-of-Three Champion, sold for 20,000gns

The final bull to reach the 20,000gns mark was Glenericht Superb, who dominated the previous day’s judging and won the titles of Overall Male Champion and Intermediate Champion, and formed part of the Group-of-Three Champion team. This 18-month-old is from the Glenericht herd of W K & P Drysdale, Perthshire, and was sired by their successful stock bull Caylers Oxford. Superb’s dam is Glenericht Jackie, a daughter of the 12,000gns Caylers Gladiator. Winning the bid and taking the Champion home was L Houston of the Gretnahouse herd.

Ricnick Sonnybill, sold for 16,000gns

Taking the next highest price of 16,000gns was 18-month-old Ricnick Sonnybill, bred by R F McCornick of the Ricnick herd in Dumfriesshire. Sonnybill had previously earned the titles of Reserve Junior Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show and Breed Champion at the Dumfries Show this summer. Sonnybill was sired by the popular AI bull Harestone Hercules, and his dam Ricnick Lingo is a daughter of Whitecliffe Harlequin – a trait leader in 400- and 600-day weight EBVs. Sonnybill will be heading to Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire, under the care of successful bidder Shennanton Livestock.

Allanfauld Shogun, sold for 12,500gns

Selling for the next highest price of 12,500gns was 18-month-old Allanfauld Shogun from A MacGregor, Allanfauld herd. This strapping bull has a number of familiar names in his pedigree, having been sired by the easy-calving Maerdy Norseman, and out of Allanfauld Mazurka, a daughter of the 11,000gns Balmyle Jasper. Shogun caught the attention of J More, who secured the final bid and will be taking him home to Kippen, Stirling.

Glenernan Sprinter, sold for 12,000gns

Two bulls reached the next highest price of 12,000gns – the first of which was Glenernan Sprinter from W & N Milne of the Glenernan herd in Aberdeenshire. Sprinter was sired by the 17,000gns Elgin Jagger, and his dam Corskellie Lily goes back to Wesley Galleon. At 21 months old, Sprinter was one of the oldest bulls forward for sale, but this did not deter bidders. Winning the bid was T Smith & Son, and Sprinter will be heading back to Aberdeenshire to their holding in Alford.

Glenericht Scotsman, Group-of-Thee Champion, sold for 12,000gns

Next to reach 12,000gns was Glenericht Scotsman, another offering from W K & P Drysdale and a half brother to the Overall Champion. Scotsman also formed part of the Group-of-Three Champion team. This 18-month-old was also sired by Caylers Oxford, and his dam is Glenericht Naomi, a daughter of the 15,000gns Maerdy Hwre. Scotsman will be making the trip to Fortrose, Inverness, to the holding of winning bidder J McKenzie.

Hollywell Sorrento, sold for 11,500gns

A further two bulls secured the next highest price of 11,500gns. The first of these was 20-month-old Hollywell Sorrento, from the Hollywell herd of J & S Middleton, Aberdeenshire. Sorrento is by the ever-popular Whitecliffe James, and his dam Hollywell Italy introduces some Irish genetics, being a daughter of Clonoulty Andraemon. Sorrento will be journeying over to Morpeth, Northumberland, under the care of final bidder F T Walton.

Goldies Sultan, sold for 11,500gns

Next to reach 11,500gns was 19-month-old Goldies Sultan from H Goldie of the Goldies herd in Dumfries. This impressive young bull was sired by Gretnahouse Heman, who is a trait leader in several EBVs including Calving Ease Direct and 200, 400, & 600-day weights. Sultan’s dam is Goldies Goldengirl, a homebred daughter of Goldies Ambassador. Sultan will be heading over to Ballindalloch, Morayshire, courtesy of successful bidder J Stuart.

Bonnykelly Scotsman, Reserve Senior Champion, sold for 10,000gns

A total of five bulls managed to secure the next highest price of 10,000gns. First up was the Reserve Senior Champion Bonnykelly Scotsman from R Leggat of the Bonnykelly herd, Aberdeenshire. Scotsman was sired by the 10,000gns Gretnahouse Ivory, and his dam Bonnykelly Jennifer is a Kersknowe Clansman daughter. Winning the bid for this striking 20-month-old was Nether Balfour Farms Park, who will be taking him back to Drumolk, Banchory.

Hollywell Seoirse, sold for 10,000gns

Next to sell for 10,000gns was another from J & S Middleton – 19-month-old Hollywell Seoirse. Seoirse has an impressive pedigree behind him – he was sired by the 18,000gns Thrunton Fairfax, and his dam Hollywell Noami is a daughter of popular easy-calver Blelack Digger. Seoirse caught the eye of G P Udale & Son, and they will be introducing him to their herd in Penrith, Cumbria.

Corrie Stampede, sold for 10,000gns

Also reaching 10,000gns was 17-month-old Corrie Stampede, bred by D MacGregor of the well-known Corrie herd in Glasgow. Stampede is an excellent example of French genetics, having been sired by the French-born Harestone Oscar. His dam Corrie Lilo is a daughter of Gavinburn Harry and goes back to the easy calving Blelack Digger. Stampede was purchased under joint ownership between J Irvine & Son of Ballindalloch, Banffshire and D Muirhead of Arbroath, Angus.

Gretnahouse Smiler, sold for 10,000gns

Next to sell for 10,000gns was 17-month-old Gretnahouse Smiler from L Houston of the Gretnahouse herd in Dumfriesshire. Smiler was sired by Westcarse Jimmy, who is a trait leader in 200-, 400-, and 600-day weight EBVs, and his dam Gretnahouse Nannabel is by the 12,000gns Wesley Equinox. Smiler is certain to go on to perform well for his new owners W J Morrison & Sons of MacDuff, Banffshire.

Balthayock Sebastian, Reserve Overall Male Champion & Junior Champion, sold for 10,000gns

The final bull to reach the 5-figure mark, also at 10,000gns, was the day’s Reserve Overall Male Champion and Junior Champion, Balthayock Sebastian from the herd of D F W H & N R Walter in Perth. Sebastian is following in his sire Balthayock Loyalist’s footsteps – he had also won the Junior Championship at Stirling in 2016 before selling for 14,000gns. Sebastian’s dam is Balthayock Lucia, a daughter of Ugie Echo. This strapping young lad will be making the long trip down to the Vexour herd in Surrey, to his new home under the care of J Boomaars.

Harestone Royalgem, Female Champion, sold for 5,500gns

Thirteen females were sold after the conclusion of the bull sales, with the highest price of 5,500gns being secured by the Female Champion Harestone Royalgem from R & N Barclay of the Harestone herd in Aberdeenshire. Royalgem has some excellent names in her pedigree – she was sired by the 40,000gns Maerdy Newman, and her dam Harestone Locket is by the 25,000gns Inverlochy Ferdie. Securing the final bid for this stunning young heifer was K Watret of the Annanview herd, Dumfriesshire.

Following on from the female sale was the dispersal of the well-known Lochend herd, run by Iain Millar in Stirlingshire. The top price was an incredible 21,000gns, and was secured by an outfit consisting of a beautiful cow Lochend Lightning and her 5-month-old bull calf Lochend Thunder. Lightning was sired by the sought-after Oldstone Egbert, and her dam Lochend Glitter is a daughter of the 28,000gns Brampton Nacodar. Her bull calf Thunder was sired by Swalesmoor Oscar, whom the Millars purchased for 10,000gns in 2020. After a furious round of bidding, the hammer finally came down with D Sawrij of the Swalesmoor herd in Selkirkshire taking the last bid.

Finally, the dispersal of the Ravensworth herd, from W S Oates in Tyne and Wear, concluded the day’s proceedings. The top price was 8,500gns, and was secured by Ravensworth Nicole. Nicole was sired by Goldies Judge, and she is out of Ravensworth Ivy, a daughter of the 11,000gns Thrunton Bombadier. Nicole had been scanned in-calf to Goldies Orchard in May 2022, and both her and her future calf are sure to perform admirably for new owner E Vaughan of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire.
