The dispersal sale of the Needham family’s Cockerington herd of polled Charolais attracted huge interest at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, with buyers keen to secure sought-after breeding lines from this renowned 57-year-old herd.
A packed ringside saw trade peak at 14,000gns for the four-year-old stock bull, Askome Ture, a Swedish-bred son of Pharmer Av Askome, out of I.Ginny Av Askome. Homozygous polled, he caught the eye of JF Lambert, Haybridge Mill, Skirpenbeck, York.

Another stock bull, Askome Ulas, also bred in Sweden, sold at 8500gns to T and D Langcake, Isel Old Park, Cockermouth. His sire is OR PP, while his dam is J.Etoile Av Askome.

The in-calf heifers proved popular, selling to a top of 10,000gns for one of the catalogue favourites Cockerington Valerie, a two-year-old daughter of Simontorp Nanook, out of Cockerington Petta. She sold to Stuart Barclay’s Aberdeenshire-based Harestone herd.

Another Simontorp Nanook-sired heifer,Cockerington Viv, sold at 9000gns to Langley Farm Holdings, Porlock Weir, Minehead. This February, 2024-born heifer is out of Cockerington Martha.
Leading the cow and calf units were Cockerington Petal and her twin bull calves, Cockerington Browning and Cockerington Beretta, which sold for 8000gns to PF Hughes who bought several lots on the day for the EasyPoll herd. A sixth calver, seven-year-old Petal is by Simontorp Marabou and out of Cockerington Lilac. The calves are by Askome Utrillo.
Also selling at 8000gns were the six-year-old Cockerington Perle and her heifer calf, Cockerington Beyonce, which went to RS Groundworks, Meadowvale, Ulverston. Perle is another daughter of Simontorp Marabou, out of Cockerington Mitzi, while Beyonce is sired by Askome Utrillo.

Overall, 47 cows and calves averaged out at £6427.34, while 23 in-calf heifers levelled at £5044.56; 19 maiden heifers averaged £3934.73 and the two stock bulls averaged £11,812.50.
