Top 10,500gns and average £4,701 for 56 lots traded, 84% clearance

Charolais established two new centre records in Welshpool on Thursday 19 April peaking at a new spring top price of 10,500gns and a new all beef breeds average of £4,701, up £995 on the year, for 56 lots sold and 84% clearance at the breed society’s official spring fixture. The day’s trading included 19 lots at selling at 5,000gns or more.

“The day’s solid trade was driven by commercial men who travelled from throughout Wales and beyond to buy a new Charolais bull confident that he will leave high performance calves that will go on to command premiums over all other Continental cattle, which according to AHDB data stands at a significant average 10%,” commented the society’s president, John Wight. “Furthermore, this

Sale leader at 10,500gns was Midas Furious TI +45, SRI +49, a 19 month old first class prize winner by Shamley Vaguero and out of a homebred heifer from father and son team, Roger and Andrew Coppinger who run a 15 cow herd at Edstaston, Wem and were enjoying their first ever five figure price in 25 years of breeding pedigree Charolais. “We’re delighted at the achievement and to be able to breed what the market wants,” said Mr Coppinger after Furious was secured by commercial producer, Dilwyn Lewis, Merthyr Cynog, Brecon to run with his 50 cow suckler herd. “We came to buy a bull with shape accompanied by high EBVs for growth and ease of calving, and this one ticked all the boxes,” said Mr Lewis.

Next at 10,000gns was the day’s champion, Esgob Ferrari TI +30, SRI +37 bred and exhibited by Gareth Jones, Cwymtirmynach, Bala who was adding to his countless string of successes achieved in Welshpool during the last quarter of a century. Judge, Mike Atkinson commented: “Breeders offered a tremendous line up of quality bulls, however Ferrari was a clear winner; he demonstrated real power and was very correct with a good top line, muscle, locomotion and head.” Ferrari was a 22 month old, out of a homebred dam going back to Maerdy Orateur and another son of the 18,000gns Thrunton Virginian who has sired over 25 sons from Mr Jones’ 30 cow herd selling to average 6,500gns. He was purchased as a new herd sire for Newroddige herd, Edingale, Tamworth.

Father and son team, Bob and Rhion Roberts, Ucha, Abergele offered their best ever in Welshpool at 8,200gns with the catalogue’s final entry, Brynffanigl General TI +45, SRI +43, a 14 month old by the 17,000gns Alsnow Almighty and out of a homebred dam going back to Dingle Hofmeister. A first class prize winner, he was knocked down sold to HW Lloyd, Abergele.

Three lots shared a 6,500gns bid. First to go was Pennal Franco TI +46, SRI +31, an 18 month old Doonally son and out of a homebred dam going back to Gretnahouse Noel. Bred and exhibited by Alwyn Rees, Pennal, Machynlleth, he was secured by EM Gittins, Menai Bridge, Anglesey.

Next at 6,500gns was Wesley Fagin TI +49, SRI +52, from Griff Morris, Llanstephan, Carmarthen to PR Bufton, Llandewi, Llandrindod Wells. Sired by Balmyle Dingle, he was out of a Wesley dam by Balthayock Aesop. Later in the day the same vendor offered his homebred Cargriff Goldstandard TI +51, SRI +51, for 6,200gns to T and A Tudor, Llanerfyl, Welshpool. This 14 month old was by the 10,000gns Thrunton Aramis and out of a Kelton bred dam by the 20,000gns Balmyle Magnate.

The day’s third 6,500gns call was made by E Jones, Landeiniolen, Caernarfon for Caylers Fugitive TI +36, SRI +45. This first prize winning 16 month old bred and exhibited by the Barker family, Nuthampstead, Royston, was by Caylers Bombadier and out of a homebred dam by Okapibb.

A total of four lots shared a 6,200gns bid. Leading the way was the reserve champion, Solo Furgus TI +43, SRI +31 from C and R Currell, Eastharptree, Bristol. This 22 month old was by Newroddige Bonanza and out of a Maerdy Impeccable sired homebred dam. The buyer was W Lees, Burnaston, Derby.

The next two 6,200gns bids went to entries from Roger Everall, Shrawardine, Shrewsbury. The 19 month old, Shraden Followtheleader TI +38, SRI +26, by the homebred Shraden Calypso and out of a Shraden dam by Loganbar Herdsman, sold to P and D Jones, Maesmaw, Welshpool. Later, Shraden Fearless TI +38, SRI + 31, a 17 month old Shraden Osram son and out of a Balthayock Matthew sired homebred dam made 6,200gns to SG Morgan, Talybont on Usk, Brecon. Next best for Mr Everall at 5,000gns was Shraden Ftse TI +48, SRI +34, another Calypso son and out of an Osram sired dam. The buyer was ILW Evans, Aberhosan, Machynlleth.

Leading entry at 6,000gns from Flintshire vet, Esmor Evans, Mold was Maerdy Firebug TI +51, SRI +51, a 17 month old Lincolnshire Duke son and out of a homebred dam by the 55,000gns Thrunton Voldemort. He went home with JW Hammond and Sons, Llanyre, Llandrindod Wells. Mr Evans’ next best at 5,000gns to PJ Davies, Sennybridge, was the two year old Maerdy Fulham TI +17, SRI +10 by T-Unisson and out of a homebred dam.

Congress Francois TI 38, SRI +36, a 19 month old Turbo son from ML Impey, Little Hereford, Ludlow was secured for 5,800gns to WL Williams, Blackmill, Bridgend.

Next were two entries by Goldies Champion from the Roberts and Jones partnership, Llangadfan, Welshpool. First at 5,600gns was Montgomery France TI +32, SRI +31, an 18 month old who was first in his class and whose homebred dam went back to Tullygarley Attaboy. He was knocked down sold to AP Augustus, Cynghordy, Llandovery. Minutes earlier, the 19 month old Montgomery Falcon TI +39, SRI +39 made 5,500gns to Cnewr Estates, Sennybridge.

Trefaldwyn Ferguson TI +46, SRI +42, an 18 month old by Balmyle Addition and out of a homebred dam by Major, made 5,400gns to J and B Vaughan, Llanerfyl, Welshpool. He was bred and exhibited by Arwel Owen, Foel, Welshpool who also offered Trefaldwyn Gemini TI +60, SRI +53 at 5,000gns to the Williams Brothers, Margam, Port Talbot. The 15 month old Gemini was a Blelack Digger son and out of a homebred dam by Major.

Deunawd Fernando TI +33, SRI +32, a 21 month old by Allanfauld Chieftain and out of an Esgob bred dam was offered at 5,000gns by Wil Owen, Criccieth and returned home with near neighbor RG Owen, Criccieth.
