A huge demand for quality Charolais bulls resulted in a record average and record clearance at the November show and sale at Welshpool, which was judged by Ian Bell of the Hallbankgate herd in Brampton. Overall, 45 bulls sold to average £8377, an increase of £2757 per head on the year, with an 88% clearance.
Trade topped at 15,000gns twice, with the first at that money being the first prize winner, Moelfre Vodka, a son of the 15,000gns Glenericht Springer, from Kevin Thomas, Llechwedd, Capel Iwan. Out of the Balmyle Impression daughter, Moelfre Poppy, Vodka was male and reserve overall champion at this year’s Royal Welsh Show. He sold to D Morris, Treborth Uchaf Farm, Bangor.

Joint sale topper was another first prize winner,Esgob Victorius, from GM Jones, Hafod Yr Esgob Uchaf, Bala, Gwynedd, which sold at 15,000gns to IDF and LWF Owen, Rhyd Y Defaid, Trefor, Anglesey. Sired by Solwayfirth Peterpan and out of the Goldstar Gentleman daughter Esgob Nen, he’s a full brother to Esgob Tattoo, an 11,000gns seller at Welshpool in 2023.

The overall champion, Castellmawr Vamp, made the next top price of 14,000gns for A and M Williams, Castell Mawr, Pistyll, Gwynedd. Reserve male champion at the Royal Welsh in July, he is by Caylers Olympus and out of Castellmawr Roxy. Buyer was RH Powell, Middle Crochran, Llaithddu, Llandrindod Wells.

Matching the 14,000gns price was Moelfre Vinny, another from Kevin Thomas, which sold to GI Francis, The Bryn, Newtown, Powys. This first prize winner is by Glenericht Springer and out of Moelfre Ralarwdins, a Thrunton Nugget daughter.

Also hitting the 14,000gns mark was the reserve champion,Sportsmans Valiant, from the Boden family, Mellor Hall, Stockport. He’s a son of Elrick Outlaw and out of Sportsmans Liberty, a daughter of Barnsford Ferny. That one sold to HE Havard, Cwm Brynich, Sennybridge, Brecon.

Reaching 12,000gns was GM Jones’ Esgob Volvo, a son of Solwayfirth Peterpan, out of the Caylers Hustler-sired Esgob Peach. A full brother to the 10,000gns Esgob Ugo, this one went to G Davies, Pantglas, Trecastell, Brecon.

The second prize winner, Moelfre Vincenzo, another from Kevin Thomas, also made 12,000gns, selling to MPB Ashton and Son, Belan Ddu, Cefn Coch, Welshpool. His sire is Balthayock Rambo, while the dam, Moelfre Noella, is by Balmyle Impression.

Hendy Valiant made 12,000gns too, for JAW Rees, Nantyrhendy, Llangurig, Powys. This Whitecliffe Rocket son, out of the Killadeas Contact daughter, Hendy Halo, was knocked down to EH and EW Anwyl, Rhosgoch, Staylittle, Llanbrynmair.

At 11,000gns Waldencourt Charolais, Pool Hill, Newent, sold this second prize winner,Waldencourt Victor, to J and E Jones and Son, Lower Hall, Meifod, Powys. He is a son of Glenericht Mecca, out of the Goldies Unbeatable daughter, Waldencourt Ruby.

Earlier in the sale, Messrs Roberts and Jones, Parc, Llangadfan, Welshpool, received 10,000gns for Montgomery Verve, a Caylers Spencer son, out of Montgomery Siam, by Gretnahouse Jugular. Final bidder there was M Owen, Bryn Beuno, Llanrug, Caernarfon.

Top for Esmor Evans, Flintshire, was 10,000gns for the third prize winner, Maerdy Vascular, an Oakchurch Samson son. Out of the Maerdy Hearthrob-sired Maerdy Rosebud, he went to the Seawell herd of Peter Donger, Towcester.

Leading the female trade at 10,000gns was Gareth Jones’ Graiggoch Valleygirl, purchased by T and D Jenkins, Blaenrhodyn, Newcastle Emlyn. This 15-month-old heifer is by Caylers Oxford and out of Graiggoch Mistique, a daughter of Clyth Diplomat.
