Charolais bulls met with strong demand at Welshpool on Saturday 30th April, with 31 bulls selling to a top price of 9,000gns and an average of £4176 with an overall clearance rate of 76%.

Leading the bids at 9,000gns was the red ticket winner Maerdy Jogger, bred and exhibited by Esmor Evans, Mold, Flintshire. This May 2014-born son of Maerdy Dynamite and out of the homebred Maerdy Debbie going back to the 55,000gns Thrunton Voldemort was purchased by John and Jenny Rix, Colchester, Essex.

Following on at 6,000gns came another class winner, this time consigned by David Thornley, Hartshorne, Derbyshire. Dooley Jedith TI +59 SRI +53, an 18 month old sired by the 15,000gns Goldies Dynamite went home to Dileyn, Herefordshire with CM Hanson.

Just behind at 5,800gns and catching the eye of WG Smyth Barnstable, Devon was Oakchurch Jaguar TI +76 SRI +74. Shown by Jeremy Price, Staunton-on-Wye, Herefordshire the 17 month old Jaguar by the 30,000gns Dingle Hofmeister is out of a homebred dam going back to the popular and renowned easy calver Blelack Digger.

Knocked down to 5,600gns was a blue ticket winner from Gareth Jones, Bala, Gwynedd. Esgob Lucky TI +58 SRI +62, a 15 month old son of Blelack Digger was purchased by DC and M Hughes, Meifod, Powys.

Next were two lots, both being tapped out third in their respective classes earlier in the day by judge Charlie Maclean and consigned by Caylers Charolais, Nuthampstead, Hertfordshire. The first a November 2014-born Ramses son was Caylers Joshua who went home with AT Ruell, Llandrindod Well, Powys for 5,500gns. Then DM Tudor, Trawsfynydd, Gwynedd paid 5,200gns for the 15 month old Caylers Lineker TI +51 SRI +52 sired by Blelack Digger.

Also at 5,500gns was the reserve champion Trefaldwyn Jupiter TI +57 SRI +54 bred and exhibited by Arwel Owen, Foel, Powys. Jupiter is sired by Goldies Eddy while the dam is the Blelack Digger-sired Trefaldwyn Haf, this 17 month old was snapped up by CT and JW Richards, Craswell, Herefordshire.

Earlier in the day Kevin Thomas, Capel Iwan, Carmarthenshire offered Moelfre Jay TI +49 SRI +43, a 19 month old class winner and son the of the 16,000gns Royal Welsh show reserve male champion Anside Foreman. Jay was knocked down sold for 4,500gns to J and HL Hudd, Tredegar, Gwent.

Two lots shared a 4,400gns price tag. Brynffanigl Lin from Bob Roberts Abergele, Clwyd was the first, a 15 month old yellow ticket winner sired by the Balmoral show reserve male champion Thrunton Flyingscotsman, he heads down to Okehampton, Devon to work for Peter Heard.

Matching the 4,400gns price and going to the same home was Cargriff Leo TI +58 SRI +52. This February 2015-born Goldstar Echo son was offered by Griff Morris, Brecon, Powys.

Females

An added feature was the production sale of the Chesham and Silver herds from Buckinghamshire which was a tremendous success with all 10 cow and calf outfits finding new homes. The Chesham herd is the oldest pedigree Charolais herd in the country founded by Tony Harman and now owned by his grandson Ben, with the Silver herd being established by Tony’s son Dan.

The stars of this section were Chesham Emma and her 10 month old bull calf Chesham Leopard. Emma is sired by the French imported Chesham Potemkine and her son is sired by the 18,000gns Thrunton Fairfax. They were purchased together in a 3,300gns deal by Mark Swistun, Gower, Swansea.

Purchaser DJ Barnes liked the look of the Silver animals snapping up four pairs to take back to his home in Newent, Gloucestershire including the three year old Thrunton Fairfax daughter Silver Indus and her 24 day old heifer calf Silver Marikina by Silver Jules at 1,850gns. Then at 1,700gns he bought another pair at the same age and also sired by the same duo – Silver Idun and her month old son Silver Mjolnir.

The female section was rounded off by a consignment of four cracking heifers from John and Jenny Rix, Nayland, Essex. Their top priced was the February 2014-born Wissington Jilly TI +50 SRI +38. Forking out 2,100gns for this 12,000gns Thrunton Galaxy daughter and class winner was JG Rich and Son, Mold, Flintshire.

Charolais bulls met a strong demand at Welshpool on Thursday 4 February topping at 5,000gns with 21 bulls selling at a clearance rate of 75% and an average of £3450.

Society Chief Executive David Benson commented, “Considering that the single farm payment has not yet been received by the majority of farmers, there was a ready demand for Charolais bulls with commercial beef producers once again putting their faith in the breed which is the most efficient terminal sire at meeting the optimum carcase specification. Cross-bred Charolais heifers can match and even outperform the steers of some breeds”.

Leading the bids was Beanhill Jamaica TI +58 SRI +57 from James and Belinda Kimber of Chippenham, Wiltshire. This 18 month old Blelack Digger son was purchased for 5,000gns by BA Williams, Anglesey, Gwynedd.

The Kimber’s also exhibited the reserve champion Beanhill Jack, who last year took the junior championship at the Three Counties Show. The June-2014 born Jack is sired by Alwent Goldbar and was bought for 4,800gns by Messrs Harding, Caersws, Powys.

From the same vendor was another Goldbar son, the 18 month old Beanhill Jupiter who was previously crowned reserve junior champion at the Three Counties Show and was purchased by Messrs Sargent and Waight, Pewsey, Wiltshire for 3,400gns.

Next selling for 4,000gns to JP Breeze and Son, Knighton, Powys was Moelfre Jace, a 17 month old son of the 16,000gns Royal Welsh reserve male champion Anside Foreman. He was exhibited by Kevin Thomas, Castlenewydd Emlyn, Carmarthenshire.

From the same vendor was the second prize winner Moelfre Jamil by Anside Foreman, who was purchased for 3,400gns by JL Jones and Partners, Knighton, Powys.

Knocked down at 3,800gns was the September-2014 born Dawson Jack TI +62 SRI +59 sired by Goldies Eddy and offered by Rachel Dawson, Newton Burgoland, Leicestershire who returned to Leicestershire with DN Cook.

The 14 month old Lindford Jacko TI +70 SRI +66 also took the eye of Mr Cook who purchased this Blelack Digger son for 3,000gns from Alan Platt, Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

Four bulls were sold for 3,500gns. The first was the 20 month old class winner Lindford Jamie by Cottage Devon and selling to JE and SI Morgan, Wells, Powys. Richard and Alison Tucker offered the next, Gower Juggler. This May-2014 born Alwent Goldbar son was snapped up by CJ Jones, Rhayader, Powys. Then the 19 month old Maerdy Julep by Maerdy Dynamite was purchased by A & B Lewis, Machynlleth, Powys from Esmor Evans, Mold, Flintshire.

Gareth Jones, Bala, Gwynedd exhibited the September-2014 born Blelack Digger son Esgob Jake TI +63 SRI +63 who was the last bull to sell for 3,500gns to A & JA Hopkins, Aberystwyth, Ceredigion.

Next selling for 3,200gns to the Thomas brothers, Llanfylin, Powys, came the supreme champion the 16 month old Wissington Highflyer son Wissington Jason exhibited by John and Jenny Rix, Colchester, Essex.

Finally selling at 3,000gns was Fronheulog Jacob a 16 month old from Huw and Janice Evans and Rhian Varga, Macclesfield, Cheshire. The man behind the money on this Blelack Digger son was AE Gough, Knighton, Powys.

Charolais cattle sold to a top price of 6,000gns with a bull clearance rate of 70% at the official Society sale at Welshpool on Thursday 5th November.

The sale topper at 6,000gns came from the Midas dispersal sale on behalf of Roger, Cath and Drew Coppinger of Edstaston, Shropshire. Midas Cath by the 15,000gns Carlisle Supreme Champion Burradon Talisman and her five month old heifer calf Midas Likenoother by Alwent Goldbar were purchased by WJ Lewis, Brecon, Powys.

The Coppinger’s sold three more cow and calf outfits all with calves sired by Alwent Goldbar. Firstly was the 30,000gns Dingle Hofmeister daughter Midas Hilda TI +48 SRI +52 and her nine month old bull calf Midas Luke who went home with Andrew Sellick, Knutsford, Cheshire at 3,600gns.

Also at the same price was Midas Fifi TI +42 SRI +43 sired by the 25,000gns Supreme Perth Champion Goldies Unbeatable, being purchased by GR Gould, Minehead, Somerset and her 8 month old daughter Midas Lily who went home with VAS Corbett, Knighton, Powys.

Another Midas pair sold for a total of 3,500gns. HP Thomas, Brecon, Powys purchased Midas Fantastic TI +55 SRI +45 sired by Mowbraypark Paramount, whilst her nine month old bull calf was bought by HM Griffiths, Felinfach, Lampeter.

The Mortimers Farm, Eastleigh, Hampshire sold cows and calves to a top price 3,200gns for Mortimers Hologram TI +39 SRI +44 by Balthayock Aesop and her 9 month old bull calf Mortimers Lysander sired by the home-bred Mortimers Invincible, purchased by JT and AW Davies, Llangedwyn, Shropshire.

Mortimers’ also sold cows with calves for 3,050gns and 2,800gns respectively. The Seawell Icon daughter Mortimers Gracious and her 11 month old heifer calf Mortimers Juliet by the South East calf show champion Mortimers Hurricane caught the eye of MA Swistun, Gower, Swansea. Then GR Gould, Minehead, Somerset took home Mortimers Feisty by the 12,000gns Cleffany Spitfire and her six month old Mortimers Invincible son Mortimers Lively.

In the female collective section GM Jones, Bala, Gwynedd secured the highest price of 4,000gns from DH Jones, Ceredigion for his in-calf heifer Esgob Ivonne by the 26,000gns Anside Excalibur.

Then Rachel Dawson, Newton Burgoland, Leicestershire purchased the 30,000gns Balmyle Bollinger daughter Cloybank Inlove from RM and G Hughes, Owestry, Shropshire for 3,000gns.

Leading the bids for the bulls at 4,400gns was the 15 month old class winning Sarkley Jinsky TI +47 SRI +37 from EH Pennie and Son, Montgomery, Powys. Jinsky who is sired by Lisnagre Elite ET and out of a homebred dam going back to Doonally New was purchased by JM and BJ Langford and Son, Newtown, Powys.

Four bulls sold for 4,200gns. The first was the 20 month old Blelack Digger son Hendy Jeffrey TI +55 SRI +56 who was purchased from JAW Rees, Lanidloes, Powys by ASL Evans, Aberystwyth, Dyfed.

Next, exhibited by GG Morris, Llanstephan, Carmarthenshire, was Cargriff Jupline TI +48 SRI +45 a son of Alwent Goldbar who had earlier won his class. He went home with R, CW and RW Jones, Llanbedrop, Gwynedd.

The 17 month old Holtstead Jefferson TI +68 SRI +65 sired by Blelack Digger was next to sell at the same price for F, J and EC Andrews, Holmfirth, Yorkshire and was purchased by HE Williams and Son, Craven Arms, Shropshire.

This price was matched by AG and EL Jones, Llangwm, Corwen for another class winner Dooley Jemphasis by Guthrie Fernando from David Thornley, Swadlincote, Derbyshire.

Then Boden and Davies Ltd, Mellor, Cheshire sold their 17 month old Blelack Digger son Sportsmans Justice TI +55 SRI +53 for 4,000gns to WJ and EA Lewis, Bryncoch, Neath.

Selling at 3,700gns to WET and JA Pugh, Rhayader, Powys was the 14 month old Maerdy Junior TI +57 SRI +54 sired by Maerdy Gouverneur and exhibited by DE Evans, Mold, Flintshire.

Two bulls were knocked down for 3,500gns. BA & PT Heath, Hartfield, East Sussex offered the first, Sackville Julius TI +61 SRI +56. This 21 month old Blelack Digger son went to R Reynolds, Knighton, Powys. At the same price tag was the 18 month old Louis Jarrow, sired by Thrunton Fitzroy, sold by PW Greed, Exeter, Devon to with G and H Jeriman, Newtown, Powys.

Averages: 26 bulls £3,436. Females: Seven heifers £2445, Midas Dispersal: five Cows and Calves £3969, seven heifers £1694, Mortimers Draft: three Cows and Calves £3167.50

The top price of 6,900gns went to the 21 month old reserve champion Dawson Invictus TI +63 SRI +64. Invictus who was exhibited by Rachel Dawson, Newton Burgoland, Leicestershire is sired by Blelack Digger and out of a homebred dam going back to the 55,000gns Sportsmans Columbo, and was purchased by RT Watkins, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.

Another vendor with two top priced lots was RT & DM Roberts, Abergele, Clywd, both were sired by the 11,000gns Gwenog Fieldmarshall and out of homebred dams going back to Alsnow Almighty. The first to sell at 4,500gns was the 16 month old class winner Brynffanigl Intrest TI +36 SRI +36 who was purchased by W Day, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Then Edward Brothers, Oswestry, Shropshire paid 4,000gns for the 18 month old Brynffanigl Iwan TI +35 SRI +34.

A bid of 4400gns from JR Phillips, Freshwater East, Pembrokeshire secured the 14 month old Blelack Digger son Montgomery Jack TI +52 SRI +51, exhibited by Roberts & Jones, Welshpool, Powys. The same vendor also sold the 15 month old Montgomery Jupiter TI +70 SRI +63 by Balthayock Adonis for 3,700gns to JA Piggott, Malpas, Cheshire.

Then Caylers Inspector TI +34 SRI +21, a 17 month old by Thrunton Dominator from Caylers Charolais, Royston, Hertfordshire was purchased by GKE Rees, Rhayader, Powys for 4,200gns.

The next lot in the ring securing 3,900gns, was presented by BS Jones, Brecon, Powys. Bailea Igenity a 22 month old son of the 16,000gns Clyth Diplomat sold to TH Williams & Son, Welshpool, Powys.

The 19 month old Class Winner Cargriff Ironman was purchased next by T Gayden, Stow on the Wold, Glocestershire who paid GG Morris, Llanstephan, Carmarthenshire 3,800gns for his Blelack Digger son. Another of Mr Morris’ Digger sons, the 19 month old Cargriff Impeccable sold to RJ Williams, Knighton, Powys for 3,500gns.

At 3,600gns JN Pugh, Wrexham, Clwyd was next to make a purchase from exhibitor A Platt, Shrewsbury, Shropshire. The class winning 15 month old Lindford Joey sired by the 25,000gns Perth Reserve supreme champion Inverlochy Ferdie.

The second lot to secure 3,500gns was exhibited by DJ Thornley and AJ Smith Swadlingcote, Derbyshire. Davally Invader ET TI +41 SRI +39, a 19 month old son of the 30,000gns Dingle Hofmeister was purchased by WE Evans, Llanrwst, Conwy.

The only female of the sale was a cow with her eight month old heifer calf at foot presented by RJ & BE Kimber, Chippenham, Wiltshire. The 2008 born Beanhill Damson by the 17,000gns Coolnaslee Universe and her calf Beanhill Jamelia sired by Alwent Goldbar were purchased by Ian Hollishead, Goostrey, Cheshire for 3,000gns.

There was a brisk trade for Charolais bulls at Welshpool on the 5th February when 24 bulls sold to an average of £3618 and a top price of 6,800gns.

The sale topper was Davally Ivanhoe TI +50 SRI +51 from D Thornley and AJ Smith of Swadlingcote, Derbyshire, purchased for 6,800gns by GR Saunders, Bonvilson, South Glamorgan. This 17 month old Balthayock Longbow son is a full brother to both Davally Invincible who was also the top priced bull at the last Welshpool sale in November at 6,000gns and the 12,000gns Wesley Equinox.

Next, selling to MJ & DG Owen from Wells, Powys for 5,500gns came the supreme champion the 17 month old Major son Graiggoch Iceman exhibited by G Jones of Llanrwst, Conway. The judge David Bothwell from Co Fermanagh said “I selected him for his size and power. He is a structurally sound bull with the particular Charolais traits of growth and good conformation”.

Charolais females sold as far afield as Northern Ireland and Cornwall. The 18 month old champion Midas Iris TI +37 SRI +43 sold for the top price of 5,000gns to T O’Neil of Claudy, Co Londonderry. Iris won the reserve female championship at the English National calf show last year for RH Coppinger of Wem, Shropshire and is sired by the 30,000gns Balmyle Bollinger.

Also selling well for AJ Mould of Penkridge, Staffordshire was his four and a half year old cow Wesley Fettle TI +56 SRI +54 and her calf at foot. The lot was split with the 10,000gns Balmyle Dingle daughter Fettle selling for 1,800gns to RJ Gregory & Son of Truro, Cornwall, while her 9 month old bull calf Moulais Judas, sired by the 25,000gns supreme Stirling champion Goldies Unbeatable was purchased by JA Williams of Caersws, Powys for 1,200gns.

Charolais bulls met a brisk demand selling to a top of 6,500gns in Welshpool on Thursday 6 November at the breed society’s official sale.

Topping the trade at 6,500gns was the reserve champion, Trefaldwyn Ivanhoe TI +57, SRI +58 bred and exhibited by Arwel Owen, Foel, Welshpool to E Jones, Llandeiniolen, Caernarfon. Ivanhoe was an 18 month old, by Goldies Eddy and out of Mr Owen’s National Welsh junior female champion Trefaldwyn Emerald, a member of his 35 cow herd. Earlier in the day he tapped out as overall reserve championship by judge, Roger Green, who commended Ivanhoe as being a ‘modern type of British Charolais combining locomotion with great fleshing’.

Earlier in the day Arwel Owen offered Trefaldwyn Iceman TI +46, SRI +42, a 19 month old Dingle Hofmeister son and full brother to the Royal Welsh female champion, Trefaldwyn Fancygirl. Iceman was knocked down sold for 4,700gns to R Hammond, Huntingdon, Kington.

Two entries attracted a 5,000gns bid. First to go was Deunawd Ian TI +43, SRI +37, a 21 month old by the 5,000gns Brynffanigl Elvis from Will Owen, Criccieth to B Bayliss, Whitney-on-Wye, Hereford. Deunawd Ifor TI +34, SRI +29, another Elvis son from the same breeder was secured for 4,000gns by D Evans, Marton, Welshpool.

The following lot in the ring, Newroddige Imp made 4,800gns to Peter Howells, Llanwenog, Llanybyther. Bred and exhibited by Newroddige Charolais, Edingale, Tamworth, Imp was a 21 month old by the 30,000gns Balmyle Bollinger. Earlier in the day he had been awarded the supreme championship by Roger Green saying: “Imp was the complete bull; he was very well balanced, well fleshed and had great locomotion.”

Two more entries were bid to 4,000gns. First in the ring was Allostock Imense TI +54, SRI +58, a 22 month old by Blelack Digger from I Hollinshead, Goostrey, Crewe to MJ and DL Price, Hundred House, Llandrindod Wells. A 4,000gns call was made for Foxacre Initiative TI +39, SRI +49, a 20 month old by the 10,000gns Wesley Forceful from Anne Orr-Ewing, Purton, Swindon to WJ and EA Lewis, Bryncoch, Neath. The final 4,000gns bid went to the 18 month old Esgob Iori TI +38, SRI +37, an Anside Excalibur son from Gareth Jones, Cwmtirmynach, Bala to WP Jones, Llanystumdwy, Criccieth.

Mr Jones enjoyed a successful day taking the female championship with Esgob Honeysuckle TI +34, SRI +36, a two and a half year old Excalibur daughter, sold in calf to Blelack Digger. She made 5,200gns to JM Clapp, Post Hill, Tiverton who returned home with three more entries.

The female section was topped at 6,500gns for a cow and calf pair from Kevin Thomas, Capel Iwan, Newcastle Emlyn to DH Jones, Bow Street, Ceredigion. Moelfre Gala TI + 36, SRI +27 was a three year old heifer by Allanfauld Norseman offered with her 10 month old heifer, Moelfre Janquile by Maerdy Dynamite.

Next at 5,100gns from Mr Thomas’ draft was Moelfre Greta TI +48, SRI +39, another three year heifer this time by Blelack Jaguar making 1,500gns to VAS and SM Corbett, Felindre, Knighton, whilst her nine month old bull, Moelfre Jack by the 11,000gns Blelack Digger commanded 3,600gns from JR Webb, Billesdon, Leicester.

The two cow and calf leading entries from Newroddige Charolais’ draft both travelled to Devon with JM Clapp. Newroddige Gerry TI +34, SRI +35, a three year old Maerdy Estyn sired daughter sold with her seven month old bull Newroddige Jaguar by Alwent Goldbar made 4,000gns.

Minutes before, Mr Clapp bid 3,000gns for the six year old Newroddige Dafny TI +39, SRI +38, a Gretnahouse Archangel daughter with her three week old heifer, Newroddige Jeanette by the 10,000gns Welshpool champion, Esgob Ferrari.

October 13, 2014 Shraden Charolais sell to 4,200gns in Welshpool

Charolais females were in demand selling to a top of 4,200gns when the Shraden herd was dispersed on behalf of the executors of WRJ Everall in Welshpool on Thursday 9 October.

Leading the trade at 4,200gns was Shraden Ursula, an 11 year old Balthayock Matthew daughter sold with her seven month old heifer, Shraden Jessica, by the 16,000gns Anside Foreman. The pair went to Charlie Boden, Mellor, Stockport.

Ursula’s progeny were in demand with Shraden Imperial, a 19 month old son by Shraden Osram commanding the highest bull price of 4,100gns to R Thomas Bryndraenog, Knighton.

Three entries shared a 4,000gns bid. First to go was the 11 year old Shraden Ugenie, by Balthayock Matthew and sold with Shraden Jinny, a six month old heifer by Thrunton Fairfax. The buyer was Charlie Boden who minutes later made another 4,000gns bid for the Shraden Talisman sired Shraden Cyan, a seven year old with her five month old bull, Shraden Jupiter by Foreman. His final cow and calf pair at 3,500gns was the six year old Shraden Design by Mowbraypark Paramount and offered with Shraden Just Dazzling, a four month old heifer by Foreman.

The final 4,000gns call was made by E and H Chapman, Oakley Park, Llanidloes for Shraden Immortal, an 18 month old bull by Shraden Calypso and out of a homebred dam by Balthayock Matthew.

Another Calypso son, the three year old Shraden Georgio was in the money at 3,800gns to HJ Patrick, Portfieldgate, Haverfordwest. Shraden Icicle, a 17 month old Shraden Osram son was secured for 3,600gns by JC Heard, Okehampton.

At 3,400gns, B and P Elston, St Petrock, Torrington took home Shraden Christmascarol, an eight year old by Balthayock Matthew sold with Shraden Janitor, her five month old bull by Thrunton Fairfax.

Another entry by Matthew, this time Shraden Damson, a six year old sold in calf to Balthayock Hamish made 2,900gns to HB Allman and Sons, Sutton St Nicholas, Hereford. Shraden Eloise, a rising six year old by Talisman and in calf to Shraden Georgio made 2,500gn to J Wale, Clunderwen, Pembroke.

Next among the bulls were two 14 month old Calypso sons. First at 2,800gns was Shraden Inferno to JT Corbett, Penrhos, Llanymynech, whilst Shraden Ingot made 2,700gns to JW Hopkins, Newtown, Powys.

Modern British Charolais were in demand selling to a top of 6,800gns at the breed society’s official sale in Welshpool on Friday 2 May.

Sale leader at 6,800gns was Montgomery Harman a 19 month old by Blelack Digger and the highest performance recorded bull in the catalogue with a TI +76, SRI +66. Bred and exhibited by the Roberts and Jones partnership, Llangadfan, Welshpool he sold to join David Jones’ 60 cow suckler herd at Maesmawr, Welshpool. “This was a 50:50 decision made on figures – good calving ease plus growth rate EBVs plus he has the right looks,” said Mr Jones. “Store buyers are looking for Charolais crosses and are prepared to pay a premium; we intend to continue to deliver.”

Later in the day his Maerdy Huwllwyd TI +41, SRI +42, an 18 month old first class winner by the 10,000gns Blelack Fabulous made 4,000gns to H Davies, Eglwyswrw, Pembrokeshire.

February 7, 2014 Welshpool Charolais peak at 6,200gns

Charolais met a strong demand from the commercial sector peaking at 6,200gns and averaging £4,052 at the breed society’s inaugural February sale in Welshpool on Thursday 6 February.

“Trade was fuelled by buyers who had sold their Charolais cross stores or suckled calves during the last year and enjoyed big premiums over other breeds,” said society chairman, Alasdair Houston. “These producers were doing the numbers and reinvesting what was in fact a small proportion of that return in to their next Charolais herd sire.”

Sale leader at 6,200gns was Sportsmans Harrypotter TI +38, SRI +38, a 20 month old Thrunton Voldemort son and out of a homebred dam from Charlie Boden’s 80 cow herd based at Mellor, Stockport. Earlier on, he had been awarded the supreme championship, the first ever at the centre for Mr Boden.

Harrypotter sold to R Napper, Didcot, Oxford who minutes earlier paid 5,000gns for Dorcas Hyperion, a 22 month old by Dorcas Duke, bred by the Morris family and consigned by John Evans, Caersws, Powys. The 19 month old Dorcas Hussar, another Dorcas bred bull from Mr Evans and this time by Dorcas Express made 5,000gns to RE Griffiths, Criccieth, Gwynedd.

The day’s second highest bid of 6,000gns was made in a joint purchase by CN Flack, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk and Goodwin Farms, Repps, Great Yarmouth for Maerdy Hoelbren, a 17 month old by Vald’Or-Ra from Flintshire vet, Esmor Evans, Mold who sold a string of 12 entries in total to average £4,366.

Two Maerdy bulls shared a 5,000gns bid. First to go was Maerdy Huntly TI +34, SRI +36, a 22 month old Maerdy Blackout son selling to the Nicholas and Heath partnership, Tarfin, Chester, whilst Maerdy Huwcyn TI +51, SRI +45, a 19 month old by Maerdy Dynamite went to GR Saunders, Bonvilson, South Glamorgan.

Another Dynamite son, the 17 month old Maerdy Herc was secured for 4,200gns by JHJ Medland, Tavistock, Devon, whilst Maerdy Heglo, an 18 month old Esperanto son sold for 4,800gns to ED and HJ Roberts, Newtown, Powys.

Earlier in the day three Maerdy entries were each bid to 4,000gns. Maerdy Hunter TI +32, SRI +22, a 20 month old by D’Angely R went home with KW and GM Hammond and Sons, Builth Wells, Powys, whilst the 19 month old Maerdy Hartford TI +44, SRI +37, another  D’Angely R son made 4,000gns to S Pennington and Son, Church Stretton, Shropshire. The 26 month old Maerdy Heath TI +48, SRI +42 by Vald’Or-Ra was secured for the third 4,000gns call by J Bufton and Sons, Whitney on Wye, Herefordshire.

The final 5,000gns bid was made for Montgomery Hampton, a 21 month old Blelack Digger son from the Roberts and Jones partnership, Welshpool. The buyers were AW and AR Gale, Newton Abbott, Devon.

Last catalogued entry but not least at 4,700gns was Hendy Hubert, a 14 month old youngster from Wyn and Diane Rees, Llanidloes, Powys, to near neighbours, VT and S Hamer, Llanidloes. Other entries in the money included Trefaldwyn Hornblower TI +61, SRI +60, an 18 month old Blelack Digger son at 4,200gns. The buyer was the Herrick Partnership, Kirkby Mallory, Leicestershire.

New centre record ave £4,080 for 77 bulls sold; £0.54m grossed 

British Charolais bulls met a flying trade from a packed ringside in Welshpool on Thursday 7 November at the breed society’s autumn sale where prices peaked at 9,800gns and 77 entries sold through the ring to achieve a new beef breed centre record average of £4,080 with 79% clearance. The seven hour sale which grossed £0.54 million included three herd drafts and the Trefonnen dispersal.

“An electric atmosphere prevailed throughout as bull after bull went through the ring sold to commercial men who were aware of the rewards for Charolais cross store and suckled calves at the autumn sales and it clearly reflected the momentum towards returning to modern Charolais as the herd’s terminal sire,” commented the society’s David Benson.

Secured by JT Davies, Llangedwyn, Oswestry, and bred and exhibited by Arwel Owen, Foel , Welshpool, 24 hours earlier Hilton was awarded the senior and overall male championship by judge, Graham Robinson who described him as an ‘exemplary modern British Charolais’. “Hilton was very correct, he had length, a good top line and excellent locomotion. He caught my eye as soon as he came in the ring, he followed all the way through and had the edge in the final line up,” he said.

Their sale leader was Gwenog Ellann TI +33, SRI +33, a four year old Blelack Tycoon daughter and out of a homebred dam by Derryharney Outstanding. She was offered with her Thrunton Classic sired five month old calf, Gwenog Ilena. The buyer was RA Elias.

Next at 3,800gns was Pedr Amethys TI +34, SRI +31, an eight year old Mowbraypark Paramount daughter offered with Pedr Indigo, her 10 month old heifer by Classic. The buyer was Melita Corbett & Daughters, Felindre, Knighton. A bid of 3,100gns secured Pedr Geronimo TI +32, SRI +33, an April 2011 born Classic son for SJ Smith, Castle Caereinion, Welshpool.
