Balmoral Show
June 1, 2019 BALMORAL SHOW 2019 RESULTS
The Charolais Supreme Championship at this year’s Balmoral Show went to the day’s female champion, the January 2017-born Elgin Nancy. A recent purchase by exhibitor Patrick Gallagher, who bought her home to Maghera from the Morayshire based herd of Roy and Matthew Milne. She is sired by the 11,000gns Woodpark Elgin while her dam the Highland show class winning Elgin Electra goes back to the French born Harestone Tyrol. Nancy was much admired for her power and presence in the show ring and she went to take Honourable Mention in the contest for Interbreed Champion.
Standing reserve to both Charolais Champion titles was Susan & Jack Smyth’s homebred Bessiebell Nana from Magheracolton. A 22 month-old daughter of the Stirling intermediate champion Derryharney Jumbo and the Doonally New-sired Dungannon female champion Aghyoule Finoula. This young heifer is sure to have a successful future.
Judge in the Charolais section was Archie McGregor the current President of British Charolais Cattle Society who hails from Glasgow. He needs no introduction across the pedigree and commercial cattle world, from the Allanfauld herd, he has had a very successful breeding and showing career.
The Charolais breed took the Reserve Champion spot in the Linden foods Beef Groups consisting of Susan & Jack Smyth’s Bessiebell Nana, David & Shirley Bothwell’s Killadeas Olaf and WD & JA Connolly’s Brigadoon Olivia. They were an excellent young team that represented the breed very well.
There was no doubting the quality on show for the Charolais breed this year, with the Charolais male champion going on to take the title of the Fane Valley Interbreed Beef Performance Bull Champion from D & S Bothwell with Killadeas Olaf, sired by Battleford Laser and out of Killadeas Dainty, a Dunlon Ulick daughter.
WD & JA Connolly took reserve championship in the Ulster Bank Interbreed exhibitors bred pairs with Brigadoon Nyoka and Brigadoon Nigella. These excellent two year-old heifers where both sired by Goldies Icon, who also sired the Brigadoon herd’s junior female champion Brigadoon Olivia.
There was a huge level of interest in the Charolais breed across the four days of the show, with visitors complimenting the high levels of quality across the classes, and many breeders spending significant time at the ringside and in the cattle lines. The club also attracted much discussion at the breed stand where they were attracted by a superb Charolais beef display from the Marquess Family Butchers, Muckamore, Antrim.
The club is indebted to the breeders for bringing out such a fine display of cattle, the British Charolais Society, the section sponsor and the RUAS; their staff and many committees and sub-groups, as well as the farming press for all their hard work in rolling out the Balmoral Showcase.
We wish all members well on the local show circuit with the next date on the calendar for the club is the NI National Charolais Championship and the 2019 Charolais National Youth Stock Judging Final both to be held at Clogher Valley show on 31st July 2019. For more information contact Club Secretary Eilis Kelly or Club Chairman David Connolly.

Stranegone Jones homebred bull takes the title at Balmoral
Homebred Charolais bull claims the silverware from Balmoral show; Stranegone Jones won the supreme charolais championship at Balmoral this year for young breeder Robert McWilliams Drumbane Rd Maghera. A twenty seven month old son of Blelack Digger and homebred dam Stranegone Erin won his class and went on to take the Male Championship. He was up against stiff opposition in the overall line up for the Supreme Championship but he came out on top taking the sash and competing successfully in the Interbreed pairs and the group. The judge Mr Brian McAllister tapped him forward and said ‘Stranegone Jones’ is the kind of bull we want to promote the Charolais breed. Stranegone won the following club trophies: THE BREEDERS PERPETUAL CHALLENGE CUP for Best Charolais Bull exhibited by a club member and THE BRADIN PERPETUAL CHALLENGE TROPHY for Best Charolais animal exhibited by a club member and THE BRIGADOON PERPETUAL CHALLENGE TROPHY to the best homebred Charolais in show exhibited by a club member. Crowning it all off Stranegone Jones was placed as 2nd Reserve Champion in the interbreed Champion of Champions.
Club chairman David Connolly was busy on the show circuit again this year and Brigadoon Jemma following on her success at last year’s show, took the overall Female Championship , a twenty seven month daughter of Brampton Petition with dam Royal Gemma The female heifer championship brought success to Brigadoon Charolais herd but success did not stop there as she took the Reserve Supreme title winning several club trophies. The Champion Beef Show Team award was again won by Brigadoon Charolais crew.
The Charolais Junior Breed Champion sponsored by abp was won by young breeder Thomas Keelagher from Fivemiletown with ‘Aghinure Les’ a homebred just turned two year old bull a son of Hillviewfarm Handsome and homebred dam Aghinure Duchess. Later Aghinure Les competed in the MARKS AND SPENCERS BEEF JUNIOR CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS taking the reserve Interbreed Championship title.
The prize for the best Junior Female in show £100 & £50 went to the herd of Martin & Cyril Millar with ‘Glenleary Lubeck’ Cyril is British Charolais President this year. The reserve championship went to Fermanagh breeders S & D Bothwell with Killadeas Lily competing against 11 other breeds in the LINDENS FOODS BEEF GROUP INTERBREED CHAMPIONSHIP the Charolais breed were the Reserve Champions with triple Stranegone Jones, Brigadoon Jemma, Coolnaslee Jasmine.
There was a good turnout of Charolais this year and the NI breeders put in a special effort with their new banners powering the Charolais brand across the cattle halls. The Charolais stand in the Pedigree Beef Pavilion was beautifully branded promoting Charolais as the number 1 pedigree breed.

Charolais Pairs win Interbreed Championship at Balmoral Park
It is year two at Balmoral Park and many more visitors than before attended the show. Blessed with good weather over the three days it could be hailed as a real success. Charolais entries were up and new exhibitors joined forces with those who have shown cattle for decades, it is great way to gain skills in showing and stockmanship with plenty of expertise on hand.
The charolais exhibitors prepared their stock to the usual high standard for showing in their breed classes special championships and inter breed beef competitions. Cattlemen and visitors for near and far enjoyed the fine display of charolais on the cattle lawns.
The judge on this occasion was Welsh charolais breeder Mr Peter Howells Tycam Wales someone who has vast experience judging at local and National Shows. There were many successes and happy exhibitors whose triumphs will promote their stock at summer shows and forthcoming sales.
Exhibitors were happy with the judging and the crowning glory at Balmoral 2014 for the charolais breed was winning the Interbreed Pairs with two of the finest pedigree beef animals on display ‘Rumsden Fawkes owned by Paddy Gallagher & Coolnaslee Helga owned by Gilbert Crawford, the charolais breed was up against tough opposition across the other main beef breeds and Mr Billy Robson OBE a very experienced judge had a tough decision to make a call on this one.
Brigadoon herd and the Connolly Team won the crystal award for the best presentation of beef cattle of the show award. This stand is a labour of love each year with so much care and attention to detail.
Our youth featured well in the Showmanship competition, Philip Johnston Gallion Herd took fourth place in the 16-21 yr age group.
Sarah Johnston was placed 4th and Chris Collier 5th place in the 12-16 yr age group, we congratulate our young people for taking part in this competition.
To conclude we would like to thank adp for sponsoring the section, the British Charolais Society for their support, the farming press for their coverage, the membership of the RUAS; their staff and many committees and sub groups for all their hard work in rolling out the Balmoral Show.
