November 7, 2016 Dungannon Charolais sell to 5,100gns

Charolais cattle sold to a top price of 5,100gns at the Northern Ireland Charolais Club sale held in Dungannon on Friday 4th November. There were 27 bulls sold to an average of £3,290 which was an increase of £362 on the year with five more sold.

Maghera breeder Gilbert Crawford came up with the goods bagging the top prices of the day and reserve championships in the senior and junior bull sections to boot. Top of the lots at 5,100gns was the reserve junior male champion Coolnaslee Lyle. Sired by the Highland Show interbreed junior beef champion Goldstar Hugo2 and out of the homebred dam Coolnaslee Evadne going back to the Balmoral Show beef interbreed bull performance award winner Sandelford Bergkamp, this 16 month old caught the eye of Messrs J McKeagney, Maghera, Co Derry.

Also from the same home was the reserve supreme and reserve senior male champion Coolnaslee Lamarr. Another 16 month old sired by Goldstar Hugo2 and out of the homebred Coolnaslee Dancer who is sired by the 14,000gns Allanfauld Superscot, this time purchased by Dermot McCullagh who paid 4,100gns to take him home to Swatragh, Co Derry.

Two further lots made the same price of 4,100gns; the first was a July 2015-born lad from Jeremy Paynter, Hockley, Co Armagh. Drumilly Legend, a son of the popular AI sire Goldies Eddy and homebred dam Drumilly Favourite who goes back to Oldstone Egbert was knocked down to RD Armstrong, Lisburn, Co Antrim who moments later went on to purchase the red ticket winning Burnside Lightning for 3,800gns. Lightning is another 15 month old this time sired by the 9,000gns Balmoral supreme champion Goldies Carnival and exhibited by Brian and William McAllister, Kells, Co Antrim.

The McAllister’s went on to sell the September 2015-born Burnside Lawman. The 16,000gns Stirling junior champion and Caithness Show supreme champion Clyth Diplomat is the sire of this one and he took the fancy of Doris Robb, Castlederg, Co Tyrone who paid 3,600gns to take him home.

Matching the 4,100gns price tag was an entry from Stuart and David Bothwell, Ballina Mallard, Co Fermanagh. The 14 month old Killadeas Liam heads to Co Down to work at Castlewellan for Rowland Wilson and the breeding here includes; sire Blelack Digger and the 16,000gns Stirling supreme champion Blackford Dynamite daughter Killadeas Holly.

Just behind on 3,900gns was and entry from Sean McGovern, Clogher, Co Tyrone. Ratoary Logan a June 2015-born son of the Clogher Show reserve intermediate champion bull Ratoary Honkydory was tapped out as Junior Male Champion earlier in the day and snapped up by James Rice, Armagh, Co Armagh.

Mr McGovern later went on to secure 3,500gns for the 15 month old yellow ticket winner Ratoary Lancer and the man behind the money on this 13,000gns Conval Frank son was S Dobbin, Ballycastle, Co Antrim.

Three bulls were knocked down at 3,700gns a piece, with the first coming from Jack Smyth, Magheracolton, Co Tyrone. The 19 month old supreme and senior male champion Bessiebell Luigi was purchased by R McIlvar, Garvagh, Co Derry and the breeding here includes popular AI bull Alwent Goldbar and the Doonally New sired dam Aghyoule Finoula. Matching the 3,700gns price tag was the May 2015-born Ballyoak Lazard consigned by Stephen and Angela McKenna, Clogher, Co Tyrone. This yellow ticket winner is sired by the 22,000gns Newhouse Bigal and out of the homebred dam Ballyoak Fresh going back to the 14,000gns Allanfauld Superscot and was knocked down to Brian Halliday, Rathfriland, Co Down.

Another to sell at 3,700gns was Moorlough Lager. The July 2015-born Allanfauld Vagabond son Lager who stood second in his class was purchased by John Burke, Derrylin, Co Fermanagh and exhibited by James McBride, Strabane, Co Tyrone.

An entry from Douglas Morrow, Coleraine, Co Derry was next to sell in a 3,500gns deal to Donald Kane, Ballymena, Co Antrim which was the class winning Ramrad Laurence an 18 month old son of the 13,000gns Royal Highland Show class winner Allanfauld Hustler.

Leading the bids for the females at 3,000gns was the female champion Drumlone Lulu. Coming from Kenneth Veitch, Lisbellaw, Co Fermanagh and selling to the up and coming young breeder Andrew Dunne from Kinawley, Co Fermanagh. The parents of this Feburary 2015-born lass are dam Drumlone Gwen by Maerdy Grimaldi and sire Highland Show reserve junior bull champion Elgin Davinci.

Following on and the first of two to sell at 2,500gns was the reserve female champion Moorlough Joanna, another entry from James McBride. This September 2014-born daughter of Liscally ETI and Moorlough Annie who goes back to the 10,000gns Portadown supreme champion Moorlough Palo was purchased by Liam Ruddy, Strabane, Co Tyrone.

Matching the 2,500gns price was a heifer from Stuart and David Bothwell. Herbert Kerr, Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh took home Killadeas Joan a June 2014-born daughter of the 16,000gns Blackford Dynamite.

The sale was rounded off with the dispersal of the Liscurry herd on behalf of Alistair, Trevor and William Hume, Strabane, Co Tyrone.

The favourite in this section and commanding a bid of 3,400gns from Richard Bailie, Newtownhamilton, Co Down was the Blelack Digger daughter Liscurry Gemini and her 6 month old twin bull calves Liscurry Masterstroke and Liscurry Michelangelo sired by Liscurry Hercules.

Also in the money at 2,700gns was the mother and son pair Liscurry Goldie by Blelack Digger and the July-born Liscurry Magnificient who is also sired by Liscurry Hercules purchased by Lewis McClinton, Glenarm, Co Antrim.

Charolais bulls met with a ready trade in Dungannon on Monday 2nd May, topping at 4,300gns with 24 bulls selling at a clearance rate of 77% and a bull average of £2687.50.

The 24 lots were topped by an entry from M Surphlis, Ballyhullagh, Co Fermanagh. Waterview Jupiter an 18 month old son of the French imported Pirate was purchased by A Stevenson, Ballymoney, Co Antrim.

The next top priced at 3,300gns and purchased by John Mullin, Pomeroy, Co Tyrone was the class winner Riverview Jeronimo TI +51 SRI +52 an 18 month old Blelack Digger son from Neville Hicks, Bellanaleck, Co Fermanagh.

Three lots sold for 3,000gns the first was Ardmachree Joker bred and exhibited by Aaron Quigley, Macken, Co Fermanagh. The November 2014-born Goldies Eddy son Joker went home to Carrickmore, Co Tyrone with Pat Slane.

At the same price of 3,000gns Trevor Phair, Bellanaleck, Co Fermanagh was next to sell his yellow ticket winner Brogher Jack TI +48 SRI +51. James McKee, Kilkeel, Co Down was the man behind the money on this 16 month old son of Vexour Freddy.

The third lot to sell for 3,000gns was the reserve senior male championship from Stuart and David Bothwell, Ballina Mallard, Co Fermanagh with the December 2014-born Killadeas Joe. Gwenog Braveheart is the sire of this lad and his homebred dam Killadeas Gail goes back to the 16,000gns Blackford Dynamite, he journeys on to work at Newtownbutler, Co Fermanagh with Cyril Brown.

The first lot of the day was knocked down at 2,900gns to the new owner J Kane, Aghalee, Co Antrim. The April 2014-born Royaldowns Jetstream TI +58 SRI +58 shown by Mervyn McKeown, Crossgar, Co Down is a son of Alwent Goldbar.

Following on at 2,800gns was Kilturk Lucas from Patrick Grue, Kilturk, Co Fermanagh. This Cottage Devon sired lad was the youngest bull at the sale at 12 months and went home to Newtownhamilton, Co Armagh with Melvyn Watt.

Charolais cattle met with a ready trade in Dungannon on Friday 4 March topping at 4,800gns with 46 lots selling at a clearance rate of 82% and a bull average of £3039.

Trade topper was Ardmachree Jack TI +59 SRI +55, a 16 month old from Aaron Quigley, Macken, Co Fermanagh. This son of Blelack Digger and out of an imported dam was purchased by WE Carson, Ballydargen, Co Down.

Next along was another Digger son this time exhibited by John and William McMordie, Ballygowan, Co Down. The October 2014-born Solitude Jackpot TI +59 SRI +56 caught the eye of J Kennedy, Downpatrick, Co Down who paid 4,500gns.

Will Short, Beragh, Co Tyrone offered the next lot at 3,600gns. The September 2014-born Deeside Gulliver son and blue ticket winner Woodpark Jimbob TI +54 SRI +47 was purchased by J McArthur, Limavady, Co Derry.

Two bulls sold for a 3,100gns price tag and the first to go was another 17 month old, Royaldowns Jaguar TI +48 SRI +47. Mervyn McKeown exhibited this Caithness Foxley son who was knocked down to M Nicholas, Plumbridge, Co Tyrone.

The final bidder at the same price was J Shannon, Ballinaleck, Co Fermanagh. He liked the look of the 13 month old Alwent Goldbar son Corbally Louie who earlier in the day had secured a blue rosette for M Tumelty, Downpatrick, Co Down.

Leading the bids for the females at 2,900gns was the female champion Hillviewfarm Justine who was bred and exhibited by Adrian Richardson and Sons, Maguiresbridge, Co Fermanagh. This 23 month old daughter of the 12,000gns Maerdy Fiend went home to Garvaghy, Co Tyrone with I Wight.

Mr Crawford carried on his success when he received a bid of 2,500gns for the reserve female champion Coolnaslee Janelle. The May 2014-born sired by the 19,000gns Corrie Alan was snapped up by M Donnolly, Killybarn, Co Tyrone.

November 9, 2015 Charolais bulls in high demand at Dungannon

There was a brisk trade for Charolais bulls at Dungannon on the 6 November when 22 bulls sold to an average of £2928 and a top price of 5,200gns.

Prices peaked at 5,200gns for T O’Neill, Claudy, Co Derry and his class winner Glenramble Jonah TI +51 SRI +48. This 17 month old son of Alwent Goldbar was purchased by James McCracken, Bellarena, Co Derry.

Mr McCracken’s other purchase at 4,300gns was another Goldbar son, the 15 month old reserve male champion Mullanary Jethro, out of a homebred dam going back to Celtic Bigboy and exhibited by Richard and Paula Hill, Dungannon, Co Tyrone.

Three bulls were purchased for 2,500gns. The first, exhibited by S & A Bellew, Newry, Co Down was Kiltybane Jonathon, a son of the 10,000gns supreme Perth champion Thrunton Bonjovi. He sold to Joseph McDonnell, Fvemiletown, Co Tyrone. Next came an Alwent Goldbar son, Altnacree Jonas TI +46 SRI +45 from O Kerrigan and J Conn, Strabane, Co Tyrone who was purchased by James McArthur, Limavady, Co Derry. A final bid of 2,500gns was paid by Shane McCulloch, Crumlin, Co Antrim for Burnside Jagermeister, another son of Clyth Diplomat from Brian McAllister and Son, Ballymena, Co Antrim.

There was a brisk trade for Charolais bulls at Dungannon on the 25th May when 19 bulls sold to an average of £3023 and a top price of 5,600gns with a clearance rate of 86%.

The top price of 5,600gns went to Gilbert Crawford, Maghera, Co Derry for his supreme and male champion Coolnaslee Jenson. This 16 month old son of the 12,000gns Maerdy Fiend and out of a homebred dam going back to the 14,000gns Allanfauld Superscot was purchased by James Richardson, Annaghmore, Co Armagh.

Two bulls were purchased for 2,800gns. Liam Johnston, Tempo, Co Fermanagh was the first with Mountain Jack. This 16 month old Lisbawn Valour son went to Gregory Birney, Lisnaskea, Co Fermanagh. Then a 15 month old Goldies Eddy son Solitude Justthejob TI +51 SRI +44, from John and William McMordie, Ballygowan, Co Down sold to JHS Fraser, Belfast, Co Antrim for the same price.

A bid of 2,700gns secured Dartonhall Imperial for William McMaster, Carvagh, Co Derry. Bred and exhibited by John Erskine, Killylea, Co Armagh, Imperial is a 17 month old by the 15,000gns Carlisle supreme champion Burradon Talisman.

Next up at 2,600gns from Patrick Grue, Kilturk, Co Fermanagh was Knoxwell Jack, a 16 month old son of the 10,000gns Perth supreme champion Thrunton Bonjovi, he was purchased by B Allison, Newtownstewart, Co Tyrone.

Three bulls sold for 2,500gns each. First up was the 16 month old Toberlane Invincible from William Causey, Cookstown, Co Tyrone, sired by the 16,000gns Clyth Diplomat, he was knocked down sold to RW Gourley, Cookstown, Co Tyrone.

Next purchased at the same price by Paula Cullen, Coleisland, Co Tyrone was Kiltybane Jake. This 16 month old son of the 19,000gns Corrie Alan was bred and exhibited by Seamus Bellew, Cullyhanna, Co Down.

The final call of 2,500gns was made by Andrew Bailie, Newry, Co Down for Coolnaslee Jupiter from Gilbert Crawford, Maghera, Co Derry. A 15 month old, Jupiter is by the 15,000gns Goldies Dynamite.

The female trade was led at 2,800gns by the class winner Moorlough Impulse, a 22 month old by Corrie Alan and out of a homebred dam going back to the 18,000gns Fury Action, she was sold in calf. Charolais bulls peaked at 5,400gns with a bull clearance rate of 91% and an average of £3,066 for the 29 bulls sold at the breed’s Northern Ireland club sale in Dungannon on Friday 6th March.

The reserve senior male champion, a 19 month old Blelack Digger son Tullygarley Imp TI +54 SRI +54 brought the top price of the day being purchased by Pat Fox, Carrickmore, Co Tyrone from J and R Currie, Ballymena, Co Antrim for 5,400gns.

Two 18 month old Blelack Digger embryo transplant sons were amongst the top prices for C O McAskie, Omagh, Co Tyrone. Mountjoy Icecube TI +69 SRI +67 was sold to Johathan Muldoo, Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh for 3,600gns and his brother Mountjoy Icebreaker TI +68 SRI +66 achieved 3,100gns from GJ Devine, Newtownstewart, Co Tyrone.

Solitude Ingot TI +37 SRI +34 from J and W McMordie, Newtownards, Co Down, was knock down sold to Derek Johnston, Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh at 3,400gns. This 16 month old is sired by Oldstone Egbert and his dam Goldstar Guadlupe was senior female champion at the National Charolais show.

Charolais bulls met a solid commercial demand selling to a top of 5,000gns at the breed’s Northern Ireland club sale in Dungannon on Friday 7 November.

Next at 4,700gns was the 17 month old Glenramble Ironman TI +43, SRI +35, a Pirate son from T O’Neil, Claudy, County Derry. The buyer was A Douglas, Ballycastle, Antrim.

Minutes earlier Fymore Impressive TI +36, SRI +39 was bid to 3,500gns by F West, Carrickmore, Omagh. Bred by S McCaughey, Augher, Tyrone, Impressive was a 16 month old by the 30,000gns Balmyle Bollinger.

Derryharney Icyroads TI +26, SRI +24, a 19 month old Liscally Eti from Harold Stubbs and his grandson, Alan Burleigh, Lisnaskea, Fermanagh commended a 3,100gns bid from John Gault, Ballyclare, Antrim. The team’s next entry at 3,000gns was the 18 month old Derryharney Iceman TI +33, SRI +29, a Thrunton Bonjovi son to PJ McCaffrey, Newry.

The final 3,000gns price tag went to Killycolp Ivanhoe, a 15 month old by Gwenog Braveheart from John McGucken, Cookstown, Tyrone to Raymond Bowden, Stewartstown, Tyrone. Later in the day the same vendor offered Mountain Elizabeth, a five year old cow by Lisbawn Valour at 2,700gns to Messrs Ferguson, Aughnacloy, Tyrone.

Minutes earlier the same buyer went to 2,600gns for another 20 month heifer from the same herd, this time the reserve female champion, Ballinlare Ivory, by Dingle Hofmeister.

A second 2,600gns call went to Moorlough Ida, a 20 month heifer by Cloverfield Excellent from John McBride, Strabane, Tyrone to James Balfour, Irvinestown.

November 5, 2013 Dungannon Charolais females peak at 6,100gns, bulls to 4,700gns

Charolais met a solid demand with the top 6,100gns bid going to a heifer while bulls peaked at 4,700gns in Dungannon on Friday 1 November at the breed’s NI Club show and sale.

“The day’s trends echo the fact that Charolais remains the top terminal beef sire in NI, as commercial men continue to witness the higher values and faster growth of Charolais cross cattle than any other breed, combined with modern British Charolais improved calving genetics. Premiums achieved at this autumn’s sales of store and suckled calves reflect just that,” commented the society’s David Benson.

John Erskine, Killylea, Armagh offered his highest entry at 3,500gns to Noel Rutherford, Hillsborough, Co Down. The 18 month old Dartonhall Harvey was by Corrie Alan and out of a homebred dam by the 25,000gns Goldies Unbeatable.

The day’s second 3,500gns call was made by Cyril Brown, Newtownbutler, Fermanagh for Corcreevy Hamlet, a 16 month old by the 30,000gns Balmyle Bollinger and out of a Balmyle bred dam from Desmond Orr, Fivemiletown, Tyrone.

A bid of 3,200gns secured Innisrush Harry from J Whyte and Sons, Portglenone, Antrim to James MacArthur, Limavady. A 21 month old, he was by the 22,000gns Balthayock Diplomat and out of a Balmyle bred dam going back to Dingle Hofmeister.

Kilgort Hercules, a 16 month old by Tonaghmore Augusto and out of a Toberlane bred dam from A O’Kane, Ballykelly, Derry made 3,200gns to Adrian Richardson, Lisnaskea, Fermanagh.

Two lots shared a 3000gns bid. The 18 month old Kilbridefarm Stuart sired Ramrad Henry from RDA Morrow, Coleraine, Derry sold to O Cairns, Ballygawley, Tyrone. The second 3,000gns bid came from Will Gordon, Portglenone for Fymore Hercules, a 17 month old by Goldies Champion and out of a homebred dam from Sean McCaughey, Augher, Tyrone.

Kenny Veitch, Lisbellaw, Fermanagh offered the 19 month old Oldstone Egbert sired Drumlone Highflyer TI +21, SRI +26 at 2,900gns to David Clarke, Maguiresbridge, Fermanagh.

In the female section, Mr Veitch’s 20 month old heifer, Drumlone Helga TI +31, SRI +29 attracted the second highest call of 3,300gns from C and V Boyd, Drumquin, Tyrone. An Anneskeagh Sandman daughter and out of a Thrunton bred dam, earlier in the day she secured the reserve female title.

Last in the catalogue but not least was Palace Helena, a 15 month old maiden from Malachy Connolly, Ballynahinch, Down at 3,200gns to FG McGarrigle, Belleek, Fermanagh. A Doon Ultimate daughter, she was out of a homebred dam by Fury Action.

Two year old twin heifers by Sportsmans Columbo and out of a homebred Moorlough dam going back to Derryharney Outstanding were in the money for James McBride, Strabane, Tyrone. First to go was Moorlough Grace TI +25, SRI +27 at 2,700gns to Niall Daly, Omagh, Tyrone followed by Moorlough Gorgie TI +29, SRI +32 at 2,500gns to Owen Kerrigan, Donemana, Tyrone.
