Charolais bulls met an insatiable demand from commercial producers not only from NI but also breeders from England and Scotland, and selling to 8,800gns at the Northern Ireland Charolais Club’s inaugural export show and sale at Dungannon Farmers’ Mart on Friday 1 March. Nine lots were shipped including six to Scotland, two to England and one to the Republic of Ireland.

Leading the trade at 8,800gns was the reserve intermediate male champion Dartonhall Grant, a 17 month old by the 19,000gns Corrie Alan and out of a homebred dam bred by J A Erskine, Killylea, County Armagh.

Knocked down sold at 5,500gns was the 15 month old junior male, overall male and supreme champion Tullygarley General TI +37, SRI +27, by Major and out of a homebred dam. Bred by J K Currie, Ballymena, County Antrim, this one was secured by G Crawford, Maghera, County Londonderry, who recouped 4,000gns with the sale of Coolnaslee Goldmine to W Reid, Florencecourt, County Fermanagh. This 18 month old was by the 9,000gns Goldies Carnival and out of a homebred dam sired by the 14,000gns Allanfauld Superscot. Mr Crawford went on to take 3,600gns from J Giles, Omagh, County Tyrone for the first prize winner Coolnaslee Gabriel, a 15 month old by the 55,000gns Sportsmans Columbo and out of a homebred dam..

Innisrush Gold TI +28, SRI +31 traded at 5,000gns to go home with W M Hutton, Dungannon, County Tyrone. By the 9,000gns Goldies Carnival and out of a homebred dam, this 17 month old was bred by J Whyte and Sons, Portglenone, County Antrim.

The 17 month old Drummeer Gordon TI +34, SRI +40, was secured at 4,600gns by J Duddy, Letterkenny, County Donegal. Bred by E and A Morrison, Maguiresbridge, County Fermanagh, this one was by the 30,000gns Balmyle Bollinger and out of Loughside Violet.

Through the ring at 4,200gns was Burnside Glint ET TI +28, SRI +30, by the 16,000gns Clyth Diplomat and out of a homebred dam. An 18 month old bred by B McAllister and Son, Ballymena, County Antrim, Glint was purchased by K Martin, Newcastle, County Down.

The first of the lots to head to Scotland was secured for 4,100gns by S Coghill, Birsay, Orkney.

The reserve junior male and reserve supreme champion Bellarena Geronimo was a 15 month old by Tonaghmore Augusto and out of Tonaghmore Bonny and offered by M McConway, Limavady, County Londonderry.

Bids of 4,000gns were made twice. Lynderg Gigolo, by Sportsmans Columbo and out of Drumsize Vivienne, was purchased by F Lennox, Magherafelt, County Derry. A 20 month old, he was consigned by J A Quail, Banbridge, County Down.

The second 4,000gns bid went to Derryharney General TI +28, SRI +22, bred by H C Stubbs and A A Burleigh, Lisnaskea, County Fermanagh. Secured by S T Scott, Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, this 16 month old was by the 10,000gns Thrunton Bonjovi and out of a homebred dam.

The intermediate male champion Altnaveigh Galileo went for 3,800gns. Bred by S and R Thompson, Newry, County Down, this 17 month old Cottage Devon son out of a homebred dam was purchased by T Black, Cookstown, County Tyrone.

Three lots were secured at 3,600gns. First came Killadeas Gerry TI +22, SRI +19, a 19 month old by the 16,000gns Blackford Dynamite and out of a homebred dam. Bred by S and D Bothwell, Ballinamallard, County Fermanagh, this one went home with L Galway, Downpatrick, County Down.

Drumlone Gameboy TI +32, SRI +30, went for a bid of 3,600gns from S McDonnell, Ballycastle, County Antrim. By the 25,000gns Goldies Unbeatable and out of Thrunton Davina, this 16 month old was bred by K C Veitch, Lisbellaw, County Fermanagh.

The final 3,600gns call went to Glassdrummond George ET, by the 55,000gns Thrunton Voldemort and out of Kiliskeen Rosabell from P J Vallely, Derrynoose, County Armagh. A 15 month old, he was secured by A Loughran, Cookstown, County Tyrone.

The reserve senior male champion Mountain Glen was knocked down sold at 3,500gns to S Galloway, Downpatrick, County Down. Bred by L Johnston, Tempo, County Fermanagh, this 22 month old was by Lisbawn Valour and out of Derrygiff Breeze.

The female trade was headed at 4,400gns by the first prize Coolnaslee Gigi TI +24, SRI +16, by Sportsmans Columbo and out of a homebred dam. Bred by Mr Crawford, Gigi was a two year old served heifer secured by C Boden, Stockport, Cheshire, who invested a further 2,600gns in the 20 month old Derryharney Gertie TI +32, SRI +27, by the 10,000gns Thrunton Bonjovi and out of Coolnaslee Rosebud from Messrs Stubbs and Burleigh. Another Columbo daughter, the 21 month old Coolnaslee Georgina ET TI +23, SRI +13 secured a 3,100gns bid from M Loughran, Cookstown, County Tyrone.

Tullygarley Fay TI + 48, SRI +41, sold for 3,400gns to K McGuinness, Greysteel, County Londonderry. This two year old served heifer from Mr Currie was by the 14,000gns Goldies Usher and out of a homebred dam.

Also through the ring at 3,400gns was Messrs Bothwell’s reserve female champion Killadeas Godiva TI + 30, SRI + 23, by the 16,000gns Blackford Dynamite and out of a homebred dam going back to Doonally New. A 19 month old heifer, she was purchased by A Adams, Magherafelt, County Londonderry.

Trade for cows and calves peaked at 2,100gns for the five year old cow Bellurgan Daisy, by Dromiskin Viceroy and out of a homebred dam, and her two month old bull calf Cullyhanna Hanluan, sired by Blelack Digger, from N Quinn, Newry, County Armagh. This unit was knocked down sold to M Donaghy, Dungannon, County Tyrone.

Averages: 48 bulls, £3,493.44; 13 served/bulling heifers, £2,596.73; two cows with calves at foot, £2,047.50.
