Olympian Takes the Gold at the Great Yorkshire Show

Judge: Steven Nesbitt

The long-awaited National Charolais Show finally returned to the Great Yorkshire Show over the course of Tuesday 12th to Friday 15th July 2022. The Show formed part of the hugely-anticipated Charolais World Congress, with delegates from all over the world in attendance to view the spectacular animals on display. It was a remarkably close competition of Charolais animals, all expertly judged by Mr Steven Nesbitt of the Alwent herd in Darlington, Co. Durham.

Seawell Olympian, exhibited by P M & S M Donger – Supreme Charolais Champion, Male Champion

Taking the prestigious title of Supreme Charolais Champion was 4-year-old SEAWELL OLYMPIAN, bred and exhibited by P M & S M Donger of Towcester, Northamptonshire. Olympian had also secured the title of Male Champion earlier in the event. This impressive bull was sired by Maerdy Jumbuck, and his dam Seawell Ima goes back to former Nottinghamshire Interbreed Champion Maerdy Flambeau.

Maerdy Morwr, exhibited by AJR Farms – Reserve Supreme Charolais Champion, Reserve Male Champion

In reserve to Olympian for both the Male Championship and the Supreme Charolais Championship was 6-year-old MAERDY MORWR, exhibited by AJR Farms of Ellon, Aberdeenshire. Morwr has enjoyed great success recently, having won Supreme Champion at the Royal Highland Show for the past 2 years, and at 2021’s Great Yorkshire Show. Morwr was sired by Maerdy Dynamite, and out of Maerdy Fee – a daughter of the French bull Victorieux.

Tophill Roxanne, exhibited by T Atkinson – Female Champion

The event’s Female Championship was secured by another familiar name from recent shows: TOPHILL ROXANNE, exhibited by T Atkinson of Newland, Cumbria. Roxanne has previously won the titles of Female Champion and Reserve Overall Champion at the Royal Highland Show two years in a row, as well as Junior Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show in 2021. Taking the titles of Reserve Junior Champion and Reserve Junior Female Champion was 17-month-old CROOKDAKE SUNRISE, bred and exhibited by D A & S M Miller of Wigton, Cumbria. Drumshane Scania, exhibited by D H Knox – Junior Male Champion

18-month-old DRUMSHANE SCANIA from D H Knox in Colchester, Essex, took the title of Junior Male Champion. Scania is another returning name from previous shows, having won Reserve Junior Male Champion, and forming one half of the Interbreed Pairs Championship team (along with Tophill Roxanne) at the Royal Highland Show 2022. This promising young lad was sired by the 15,000gns Elgin Oliver, and his dam is Drumshane Orchid, a daughter of the French-born Maerdy Heracles.
