Morwr Reigns Supreme at the Royal Highland Show

Judge: Chris Curry

After a two-year break, the Royal Highland Show made its highly-anticipated return over the course of Thursday 23rd to Sunday 26th June. Judged by Chris Curry of the Burradon herd, the event saw a tremendous showing of Charolais cattle vie for the Championship in an extraordinarily close competition.

Maerdy Morwr, exhibited by AJR Farms – Overall Interbreed Champion, Overall Charolais Champion, Male Champion

The star of the show was 6-year-old MAERDY MORWR, who earned the prestigious titles of Overall Interbreed Champion, Overall Charolais Champion, and Male Champion. Morwr is a veteran of the showground, adding these titles to his expansive collection of Championships from 2021, which include Overall Champion & Interbreed Pairs Champion at the Scottish Showcase and Supreme Champion & Supreme Interbreed Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show. This Maerdy Dynamite son was bred by D E Evans of Mold, Flintshire, and was purchased by exhibitors AJR Farms of Ellon, Aberdeenshire in 2018.

Tophill Roxanne, exhibited by T Atkinson – Reserve Overall Charolais Champion, Female Champion, Interbreed Pairs Champion, Reserve Interbreed Group-of-Four Champion

Standing in reserve to Morwr for the title of Overall Charolais Champion was another returning champion – 2-year-old TOPHILL ROXANNE. Roxanne also secured the title of Overall Female Champion, and comprised one half of the winning Interbreed Pairs Champions. Roxanne had previously seen great success in 2021, having won Female Champion & Reserve Overall Champion in last year’s Scottish Showcase, and Junior Champion & Pairs Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show. This beautiful Hackleton Largerlout daughter was exhibited by T Atkinson of Newland, Cumbria, who purchased her from breeder A Stott of Canonbie, Dumfriesshire.

Falleninch Stormzy, exhibited by A B Hornall – Reserve Male Champion, Junior Male Champion

Also in reserve to Morwr, this time for the Male Championship, was 13-month-old FALLENINCH STORMZY, bred and exhibited by A B Hornall of Stirling. Stormzy had also secured the title of Junior Male Champion earlier in the event. This promising young lad was sired by the 70,000gns Barnsford Ferny, who also earned the Supreme Championship at the Royal Welsh Show in 2013. Meanwhile his dam is Falleninch Orla, a homebred daughter of Falleninch Imperator.

Airthmains Rosie, exhibited by D Russell – Reserve Female Champion, Junior Female Champion

In reserve for the Female Championship was the day’s Junior Female Champion – 19-month-old AIRTHMAINS ROSIE from D Russell of Falkirk, Stirlingshire. Rosie also formed part of the Reserve Interbreed Group-of-Four Champion group, alongside Tophill Roxanne, Balthayock Regal, and Firhills Polly. This stunning young heifer was sired by Thrunton Lachlan, and her dam is Lesliepark Maggie, a daughter of the Irish-born Mandela Dillon1.

Drumshane Scania, exhibited by D H Knox – Reserve Junior Male Champion, Interbreed Pairs Champion

Standing in reserve to Stormzy for the Junior Male Championship was 17-month-old DRUMSHANE SCANIA, who also joined Roxanne in winning the Interbreed Pairs Championship. This impressive young bull had travelled all the way up from Colchester, Essex, from the herd of breeder & exhibitor D H Knox. Scania was born to Drumshane Orchid, a daughter of the French-born Maerdy Heracles, and he was sired by the 15,000gns Elgin Oliver.

Silvermere Solero, exhibited by M T Hanson – Reserve Junior Female Champion

The final reserve of the day was 16-month-old SILVERMERE SOLERO, who took the title of Reserve Junior Female Champion. Solero was bred & exhibited by M T Hanson of Forgie, Banffshire, and was sired by the 12,000gns Wesley Equinox. Solero’s dam is Silvermere Ocala, who goes back to Scalehouses Humphrey.

Harestone Royallady (left) and Harestone Rosebud (right), exhibited by R & N Barclay – Charolais Pairs Champions

Finally, the title of Charolais Pairs Champions went to a pair of beautiful heifers from R & N Barclay of Insch, Aberdeenshire – HARESTONE ROSEBUD and HARESTONE ROYALLADY. Rosebud, the older of the pair at 20 months, was sired by the 23,000gns Goldies Oasis, and her dam is Alsnow Luscious – a daughter of the 25,000gns Goldies Unbeatable. Meanwhile 19-month-old Royallady is out of Harestone Julie – a Blelack Digger daughter – and was sired by the 40,000gns Maerdy Newman.
