Charolais dominates baby beef championships

Charolais sired cattle were amongst the top honours on the winter show circuit starting with the Royal Highland Winter Fair, Ingliston on Wednesday 28 November with Banrigh Innse Gall, a 395kg Charolais cross homebred heifer from the RSPB Islay, Argyll, taking the overall baby beef championship. Sired by Allanfauld Amazon, she went on to sell for £1,500 to Allan Donald.

216 Molly Malone

Standing in reserve overall baby beef champion was Molly Malone, a 390kg Charolais cross heifer. Exhibited by Donald MacPherson, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Molly Malone followed up her win at the Royal Highland Winter Fair with another overall baby beef reserve championship at East of England Smithfield Festival, Peterborough on Saturday 1 December.

144 Banrigh Innse Gall

Geraint Wyn, a 585kg Charolais sired steer, from F Jones and Son, Isgaer, Carnarvon, took top spot in the butchers’ cattle championship at the Royal Highland Winter Fair, where a Charolais cross carcass also claimed the beef ribs competition title. The award went to a 332.8kg, 20 month old heifer carcass grading –U4L from A Purdon and Son, Carluke, Lanarkshire.
