More Charolais sold than any other breed at the October run of Stirling Bull Sales and a strong commercial demand saw 22 bulls hit five-figure prices, peaking at 18,000gns on three occasions. Overall average was up by £1046 on the year, for 20 more sold compared to last October, with 85 bulls selling to average £9023.
A busy ringside ensured a 95% clearance, which breed secretary, James Hudson, says reflects an increase in appetite for Charolais bulls. “Purchasers were almost exclusively commercial buyers, who are benefiting from exceptional prices for all ages of Charolais-sired cattle,” he added.
The show was capably judged by Colin Wight of the Carwood herd at Biggar. He praised the high standard of bulls throughout the classes: “The quality was very good in each section and there were plenty good, all-round correct bulls in the top end, with great ends on them.”
The junior champion, Maerdy Victory, an Oakchurch Samson son from Esmor Evans, Monfa, was one of three bulls to make the top price of 18,000gns, and he was also one of the few bulls to sell to a pedigree herd, going to John Jeffrey, Kersknowe, Kelso. His dam, Maerdy Pretty, is a daughter of the home-bred Maerdy Montypython.

Glenericht Verdi, a second-prize winner from Peter and Allen Drysdale’s Blairgowrie-based herd, was another at 18,000gns. He is sired by Caylers Oxford, a bull that’s previously bred sons to 20,000gns, while the dam, Glenericht Ola, is a daughter of Caylers Gladiator. The MacLeans of Heylipool, Tiree, were the final bidders on that one.

The other at 18,000gns was Wensleydale Vinegar, a second-prize winner from Chris Timm, Seaton Ross, York. A Balthayock Nominee son, he is out of the Goldies Jasper daughter Tweeddale Olive, and sold to WJ Whyte, Hindstones, New Aberdour.

Bill Bruce’s reserve senior champion, Balmyle Victory, from his Meigle-based herd, sold at 16,000gns, to George Wordie, Cairnborrow, Glass. He is sired by the home-bred Balmyle Patrick, which also bred the 22,000gns Balmyle Thumper, while the dam is Balmyle Nectar, by Blelack Blackberet.

Johnny and Raymond Irvine’s intermediate and overall show champion, Inverlochy Vincent, from their herd at Tomintoul, sold at 15,000gns to A Wallace, Claycrop, Kirkinner, Newton Stewart. A Caylers Napoleon son, out of the Coolnaslee Oreo daughter Inverlochy Sally, he had stood reserve male champion at the Royal Highland Show in June.

Grant and Mark Smeaton enjoyed a strong trade for their Bombax bulls, from Cotton of Ovenstone, Inverarity, with the team topping at 15,000gns. Making that money was the second prize winner, Bombax Viper, a son of the 12,000gns Glenericht Ryder, out of the privately bought Balthayock Oklahoma. He went to WS Paterson, Golland, Kinross.

Mike Massie, Mains of Elrick, Auchnagatt, also had a successful day, topping at 14,000gns for the third prize-winner Elrick Victor, by Ballinlare Phantom and out of the Maerdy Gouverneur-sired Elrick Opal. He sold to David MacTaggart for Douganhill Farms, Palnackie,

The reserve junior champion, Inverden Victor, from Stuart Allan, Goryhill, Glenkindie, made 14,000gns, selling to Liam Muir, Upper Onston, Orkney. His sire is Goldies Rocky, while the dam, Inverden Penny, is by Goldies Lad.

Elrick Volt, another Ballinlare Phantom son from Mike Massie, sold at 13,000gns to J Stewart, Nether Balfour, Drumoak. This second prize-winner is out of Elrick Nikita, an Elrick Impeccable daughter which has previously bred sons to 8000gns.

Archie and John MacGregor, Allanfauld, Kilsyth, sold up to 12,000gns late in the day, with their first prize winner, Allanfauld Vantastic, making that money to Andrew McNee, Woodend, Armadale. He is a son of the 28,000gns Falleninch Stormzy, out of the Maerdy Norseman daughter, Allanfauld Reindeer.

Another from the Smeatons’ team, Bombax Viking, made 12,000gns to JM Fisher, Meikle Larbrax, Leswalt. Sired by the 24,000gns Harestone Ronaldinho, he is out of the privately-bought Mornity Orla, by Balmyle Magnate.

From the same home and also by Harestone Ronaldinho, Bombax Venom sold at 11,000gns to R Paterson and Son, Watsonhead, Newmains. His dam is Goldies Nelly, a Kerknowe Jambo daughter.

Archie and John MacGregor also sold Allanfauld Vermont for 11,000gns, to Glenkiln Farms, Bettyknowes, Crocketford. This fourth prize-winner is again by Falleninch Stormzy, while the dam is the Woodpark Elgin-sired Allanfauld Moira.

Best for Matthew Milne’s Elgin consignment, from Kennieshillock, Lhanbryde, was 11,000gns for Elgin Vincent, a Thurso Paul son, out of Elgin Rosemary which stood third in its class and sold to JB and EJ Peile, Greystoke Castle, Penrith.

At the same money, Catherine MacGregor sold her Moss Uzziah, for 11,000gns to Steven Sandison, Millburn, Harray. The first bull through the ring, this Harestone Rabelais son, out of Westcarse Milly, had stood fifth in his class.

Marwood Van Nistelroy, a second prize-winner from the Blyth family’s Hartlepool-based herd, also made 11,000gns, selling to A and J Craig, Craigton, Castle Douglas. Reserve junior champion at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show, he’s by Marwood Odin, out of the Coolnaslee Advocate daughter, Marwood Nadia.

Bombax Vinnie, another son of Glenericht Ryder from the Smeatons’ consignment, reached 10,000gns, to T and I Alexander, Slickly, Lyth. A fourth Prize-winner, he is out of Bombax Rosie, by Blelack Missouri.
Jemma and Sandy Forrest, from Hillend, Roberton, Biggar, sold their third prize-winner, Ladygill Vandemerwe, for 10,000gns to S Rorison, Dalowie, Patna. Sired by Inverlochy Supersemen, he is out of Ladygill Peach, a Goldstar Gentleman daughter.

Andrew Clark, Blackhill, Carluke, achieved his top price to-date, selling the first prize-winner, Teiglum Vincent at 10,000gns to Douganhill Farms, Palnackie. He’s by Balthayock Lachlan, out of the Maerdy Hwre-sired Teiglum Layla.

Another from the Drysdales, Glenericht Vented, a fourth prize-winner by Caylers Oxford, out of Glenericht Plum, sold at 10,000gns, to Grove Farms, Irongray.

From Esmor Evans’ team, Maerdy Ventriloquist sold at 10,000gns, to E Scott, Linross, Glamis. This Maerdy Leopard son, out of Maerdy Paleblue, had stood first in its class.

Final 10,000gns seller was Hollywell Vulcan, from Sandra and John Middleton, Cowfords, New Pitsligo, with that third prize-winner, by Nuthampstead Judas and out of Hollywell Noami, going to Messrs Orr, Lawhead, West Calder.
