Charolais Reign Supreme at the NI National Show in Fintona.

The large indoor arena was buzzing for one of the most successful National Charolais shows in years; 14 years to be exact since this show began in the Ecclesville Equestrian Centre in the secluded village of Fintona in County Tyrone. Who would ever dream of such a specular show of almost 100 Charolais cattle been shown in the large arena on a Friday evening. Judges Fiona and Bob Temple were extremely impressed with the lineup of Charolais cattle and the enthusiasm of the young breeders who had come along to compete in the Young Handler Competition.

From early morning exhibitors were preparing their animals to ensure that they looked their very best. It is a very competitive show giving the Charolais club another opportunity to showcase excellent pedigree and commercial Charolais stock.

Mrs Fiona & Mr Bob Temple from the well-known Rumsden Herd, at Steep Rd Jarvis Brook East Sussex had travelled to the province early on Friday morning to judge the classes and championships of both Pedigree & Commercial stock and the Young handler competitions.

The judging began with Mrs Temple in the show ring for the Animax Young Handler Competition which began at 4.30pm; there was a great entry in the under 17 years age group making it a difficult choice, but in the end an absolutely overwhelmed Caoimhe McGovern of the Ratoary herd was placed first followed closely by her sister Eimear McGovern in second place.

In the 17 yrs to 21 yrs age group it was a close call with four more experienced competitors exhibiting their skills in the show ring where both competitors and animals were exceptionally well groomed. Alan Burleigh from the Derryharney Herd was placed first with Clodagh McGovern again from the Ratoary herd in second place.

The first and second placed from both classes competed for the overall Champion Young Handler and Alan Burleigh took the coveted title of NI Charolais Champion Young Handler 2011 followed by Caoimhe McGovern in reserve place. This is the second year of the competition at Fintona and it is now firmly on the calendar with Sam Thompson Business Development Officer for NI stated that Animax were delighted to present the club with a new cup for the Champion Young Handler. Fiona Temple said "The skill and enthusiasm of the Charolais young handlers shows that the breed is in a strong position for the future in Northern Ireland".

Mr. Bob Temple entered the ring for the fifteen Pedigree and Commercial classes and

made light work of the task in hand, most classes had good entries and spectators commented on the quality of the animals on show throughout the evening.

In the pedigree section there were five classes for bulls and six classes for heifers followed by the Commercial section with four classes including junior commercial steer and junior female followed by male and female suckled calf classes.

The Commercial Championships were sponsored this year again by Fane Valley and they were not disappointed with the result; K C Veitch’s herd took the championship with a superb animal and Alan and Kenneth Veitch were presented with the McAllister Trophy, with Jack Smyth taking the reserve place in the commercial section of the show.

Followed by the BCCS championships; Junior Intermediate and Senior Female Championships were hotly contested with spectators waiting to see which

animals would come to contest the Supreme Female Championship. The overall Supreme

Female title went to an exceptional heifer Glencoe Elegance sired by Ashleigh Victor,

owned by Mrs Valerie McDonald and the McDonald family was presented with the Omagh District Council Desmond Anderson Cup presented by council Chairman Mr Frankie Donnelly. The reserve champion was to Ratoary Floss sired by Simpsons Gregg and owned by Sean McGovern Clogher.

This was followed by the Junior Intermediate and Senior Male Championships, drawing out the best of the classes to compete for the coveted title of overall Supreme Male Champion which went to Aughafad Foreman sired by the well-known Sportsman Columbo with a homebred dam Aughafad Carla owned by RH Sinnamon & Sons who were presented with the Robert Scott Shield by Martin Donaghy British Society Chairman.

The reserve champion went to Woodpark Fortknox ET sired by Corrie Alan and owned by Will Short of Beragh.

Bob Temple said
“I was very impressed with the high standard of the cattle. As a previous regular visitor to the show at Fintona I have noticed an increase in the quality of stock over the years, to the credit of the breeders. In particular the standard of the young heifers was exceptional this year, and it is these females that will ensure that the future breeding stock in the region is of the very best quality”

The commentator for the evening was Mr Adam Breen who had a busy stint on the microphone, with assistance from stewards and officials. Adam introduced and thanked the many sponsors who attended the show to present the winning rosettes and trophies.

Mr Martin Donaghy club member and chairman of the British Society proposed a vote of thanks to all who had worked so hard to make the show such a success and especially thanked all the exhibitors for presenting their animals so professionally.

A capacity attendance enjoyed the largest ever turnout of both pedigree and commercial Charolais at the NI National Charolais Show at Fintona, which gave the judges an arduous task at this wonderful spectacle.

The fine autumn weather added to the warm atmosphere and magnificent view of the spectacular cream colour of almost 150  Charolais cattle against the green mature trees, blue skies and picturesque parkland of the Ecclesville Centre at Fintona last Friday afternoon.

Supreme Female Champion Cloverhill Diana, winner of the Omagh District Council Desmond Anderson Trophy owned by WJ&AK Irwin pictured with Omagh District Council Chairman, Declan McAleer and children Tarloch and Rioghnach

The event commenced with the first ever Young Handlers Competition, with young people proudly displaying their animals in true colours. Albert Connolly had a difficult task deciding the winners, ably assisted by son David and daughter Maggie McQuiston who gave an excellent commentary on the proceedings.

After much deliberation, the winner of the class 12-17years went to Eimear McGovern, Fintona from the Ratoary Herd, who has been handling cattle from a very young age, second place went to Alan Burleigh, from the Derryharney herd.

The second class 18-21years, also went to the McGovern Family, Clodagh took home the winning rosette, with Nicole Hughes coming a close second. The overall champion of the young handlers event went to Eimear McGovern with Alan Burleigh coming a close reserve. Sandra Cochrane Chairperson of NI Charolais Club commented “Twenty two young people participated and this is testimony of the interest young people have in Charolais cattle and becoming involved in the handling of animals within the Charolais Club. This is the beginning of what could become a major event in its own right. I would like to thank Albert Connolly and family for helping to organise this event for our young people”

After ten classes of the finest pedigree Charolais cattle, the judge Alwn Rees from Wales found it extremely difficult to find champions, such was the display of Charolais cattle.

In the end the senior female champion was WJ&AK Irwin Drumquin, with homebred Cloverhill Diana sired by Burradon Talisman went  on to win the supreme female champion and the Desmond Anderson Trophy.

Reserve Senior female was awarded to S & D Bothwell, Enniksillen with Killadeas Edith sired by Dunlon Ulick.

Intermediate Female Champion was awarded to S&R Thompson, Newry with Altnaveigh Eclipse, sired by Maerdy Impeccible, a first time at a show and has much potential. Reserve was from the Aghyoule herd, Derrylin,Aghyoule Edna ET, sired by Doonally New and owned by Mr V Wilson.

The junior female champion Cornascriebe Flo, sired by Thrunton Voldemort owned by JA Watson & Son earned the reserve supreme female champion of the evening.

The reserve Intermediate bull was won by Robert McWilliams, Maghera with Stranagone Eric by Dingle Hofmeister and this fine bull went on to win the reserve supreme champion of the show.

After winning the Young Handlers Competition the McGovern girls proved that the Rataory Herd had the winning factor with Rataory Eliminator, an Ashleigh Victor son winning the Intermediate Bull Class and going on to win the Supreme Champion of the Show and the Robert Scott Shield.

.The junior bull went to H C Stubbs Lisnaskea with Derryharney Fantastic sired by Thrunton Fantastic.

Reserve going to Sean McGovern for Ratoary Ferguson ET, son of Oldstone Egbert.

The intentive spectators feasted their eyes on the super entry of almost 50  commercial cattle was led by James Alexander and McAfee Brothers, Bushmills, with their junior heifer Bushmills Bruiser, winning the overall commercial champion and the McAllister Trophy two years in a row, closely followed by reserve champion, which was the winning female suckled calf for 2010 owned by Gerard Law, Kesh. The Alexander/McAfee Company also exhibed the reserve junior female, Flash. The junior commercial steer, first place went to Campbell Brothers, Derriaghy with Toffee, with Brons exhibited by M McMullan, Eglish coming up reserve.

The male suckled calf born in 2010 was won by DMcKenna, Clogher and O’Kane Brothers Carnlough came reserve.

The reserve female suckled calf in born in 2010 went to D McKenna Clogher with Goldie.

Mr Richard O’Beirne, Tuam Co Galway, who judged the event, said “this is an extremely impressive turnout of commercial cattle today and I found it so difficult to decide the champions, there is such a high standard of cattle and I am honoured to be invited to Fintona to judge such a prestigious event”

Sandra Cochrane, chairperson of the NI Charolais Club congratulated the McGovern girls for their win at the young handlers competition and to the Cloverhill herd, the Ratoary herd and James Alexander and McAfee Brothers  on their sucess and thanked all of the exhibitors for bringing out cattle that portrayed the true value of the Charolais breed. She thanked Alyn Rees from Powys, Wales for his expertise in judging the pedigree classes and Richard O’Beirne from Tuam Co Galway for his professionalism in judging the commercial section.

A strong line up of sponsors, many of them new this season funded each class, ensuring that Fintona Show is indeed going from strength to strength.

Commentator, Adam Breen  kept everyone in touch with the judging decisions and the proceedings of the evening. He thanked Omagh District Council for their excellent facilities at Eccleville, also the British Charolais Society, without these two main sponsors the National Charolais Show could not take place.
