Belan Brigadier at 3,600gns Charolais met a solid demand selling to a top of 5,600gns in Welshpool, on Thursday 17 April at the breed society’s official spring show and sale. “Trade was fuelled by commercial producers demonstrating a glimpse of confidence in the sector, the first for more than 10 years,” commented Welshpool Livestock Sales auctioneer, John Jones. “Not only were they prepared to pay more for Charolais bulls backed by performance data, but there have also been signs of herd expansion this spring with suckler men investing in more cows.” The 5,600gns sale leader was the two year old Castellmawr Bleddyn, from father and son team, Alwyn and Medwyn Williams, Pistyll, Pwllheli. He sold to Alun and Wyn Williams, to run with their 60 cow suckler herd based at Lampeter. Sired by Doonally New and out of a Maerdy bred dam by Simpsons Gregg, he was within the breed’s top 30% with a Terminal Sire Index of 23. Earlier on in the day, Bleddyn was awarded the supreme championship by judge, John Green, Clitheroe who hailed him as a clear winner. “Bleddyn is a sound commercial bull; he has scale and conformation, and he is good on his legs,” he said. For his breeders, the entry was their first ever championship in 10 years of breeding pedigree Charolais and also their highest sold in Welshpool. The day’s second top price at 4,600gns went to Maerdy Beachboy, one of a string of eight entries to come under the hammer sold from Mold based vet, Esmor Evans. An 18 month old Maerdy Rapace son and out of a cow going back to Maerdy Orateur, this well muscled bull who was placed second in his class went to IW, M and W Owen, Llanddeusant, Holyhead. Mr Evans next highest entry at 2,800gns was Maerdy Beard, a September 2006 born Ballybrown Toby son to OI Roberts, Llandovery. A bid of 4,200gns secured Sarkley Boycott for N and GM Bennett, Manafon, Welshpool. Bred by the Pennie family, Glynn, Chris and Nigel, of Llaandysul, Boycott was a 22 month old by Moyness Lincoln and out of a homebred cow by Simpsons Gregg. The 20 month old Montgomery Bruce attracted a bid of 4,000gns from WJ and BM Lewis, Pennant, Llanon. Sired by Thrunton Valiant, a son of Burradon Talisman who produced the 55,000gns Perth supreme, Thrunton Voldemort, Montgomery was out of a homebred cow from the Roberts and Jones partnership, Llangadfan, Welshpool. The same vendors offered Montgomery Brad at 3,000gns to DS and GM Pryce and Sons, Deytheur, Llansantffraid. This 22 month old was by their homebred Montgomery Rhys, and both his parentage went back to Baggrave Loggo. Wernvale Bouncer, an 18 month old from MA Evans, Llanrhaeadr, Denbigh commanded a 3,700gns price tag from MH Morris and Sons, Nantglyn, Denbigh. Sired by Trefonnen United and out of a Chiltern bred cow. Belan Brigadier changed hands for 3,600gns to TT Jones and Sons, Van, Llanidloes. Sired by Burradon Talisman, he was out of a homebred cow from JS Abel, Llanidloes. The 17 month old Belan Bonanza, another Talisman from the same vendor made 3,000gns AD Thomas and Sons, Newbridge on Wye, Llandrindod Wells. The day’s third lot to sell for 3,000gns was Hendy Bound, a November 2006 born Tullygarley Rollerball son from Wyn and Diane Rees, Llangurig, Llanidloes. The buyer was DM Jerman, Llanidloes. Kevin Thomas, Capel Iwan, Newcastle Emlyn sold his highest entry, Moelfre Beckham at 2,800gns to C Davies, Clun, Craven Arms. A 17 month old Gretnahouse Vigorous son, he was out of a homebred cow going back to Killadeas Jack.

MAERDY BARRE MADE 3,600GNS Charolais bulls met a ready demand selling to a top of 4,200gns in Welshpool on Thursday 13 March, at an official show and sale organised by the breed society specifically prior to the reintroduction of Bluetongue movement restrictions. The society’s annual spring fixture will continue next month. Sale topper at 4,200gns was Newroddige Beethoven, a two year old within the breed’s top 5% with a Terminal Index (TI) of 32. An Inverlochy Resolve son and out of a dam going back to Maerdy Naser, Beethoven was bred and exhibited by the Newroddige Charolais partnership, Edingale, Tamworth and sold to T Jones, Ystrad Meurig, Dyfed. Minutes later, the same breeders offered Newroddige Benefactor TI26, for one of the day’s two 2,800gns bids to JM Lewis, Aberystwyth. The two year old Benefactor was by Burradon Talisman, sire of the 55,000gns Perth intermediate champion, Thrunton Voldemort, and out of a Thrunton bred cow. The day’s second leading bid of 3,800gns went to the 21 month old Shamleys Bert from Barrington Robinson, Tenbury Wells. Sired by Moyness Topnotch and out of a homebred cow by Coolnaslee Monarch, Bert was knocked down sold to BJ Davies, St Harmon, Rhayader. Two more Topnotch sons found a ready demand. Cliftonpark Brutus, a 21 month old this time from Jamilla? Robinson made 3,500gns to EW Pritchard and Son, Crickhowell, while Barrington Robinson’s two year old Shamley’s Barnaby was secured for 2,800gns by DW Williams, Corwen. Leading entry at 3,600gns from Flintshire based vet, Esmor Evans was Maerdy Barre TI29, a July 2006 born Ballybrown Toby son and whose dam went back to Maerdy Grimaldi. The buyer was RP Williams and Sons, Lydbury. Judge, Neil Blyth, Hartlepool awarded the day’s supreme championship to Caylers Bouncer who later went on to make 3,200gns to DG Williams, Corwen. Bred and exhibited by the Barker family, Nuthampstead, this 17 month old was by Maerdy Prunty and out a Killadeas sired homebred dam. Montgomery Berwyn, another 21 month old this time from the Roberts and Jones partnership, Welshpool commanded a bid of 3,000gns from TW Anwyl, Llanbrynmair, Powys. Berwyn was bred from homebred lines, his sire going back to Baggrave and his dam, to Ensdon lines. At 2,600gns, Roger Everall, Shrewsbury, offered Shraden Bartholomew, a 19 month old Inverlochy Topsire son and out of a homebred cow by Balthayock Matthew to AW Mathews, Whitchurch. Earlier in the day, the same breeder offered the rising two year old Shraden Brigand, another entry going back to Balthayock Matthew and this time by Shraden Talisman. Brigand was one of two bulls to share a 2,500gns price tag and sold to JB Crow, Telford. Deunawd Bruce secured 2,500gns from Will Owen, Criccieth. Bruce was a rising two year old by Ensdon Union and out of a Penfold bred cow by Maerdy Impeccable.

HSBC’s Mervyn Davies presents the supreme championship to Gareth Jones and Esgob Bouncer with, from left Welshpool Livestock Sales, Glandon Lewis; and judge, Paul Clements Welshpool Charolais in strong demand peaking at 4,000gns Charolais bulls met an exceptionally strong demand throughout, selling to a top of 4,000gns and a clearance of more than 60% of total entries was achieved in Welshpool, on Thursday 8 November at the breed society’s official autumn show and sale. “Despite operating in very adverse times, Welsh suckled calf producers were out in force looking for bulls that showed good growth rates and backed by complementary high Estimated Breeding Values for growth, muscle depth and calving ease,” commented Welshpool Livestock Sales’ auctioneer, John Jones. First to come under the hammer sold was sale leader at 4,000gns, Brynffanigl Backbone, a rising two year old from Bob Roberts, of Abergele. This first class prize winner was by Inverlochy Resolve, out of a homebred cow who has already produced a string of four figure bulls and he was accompanied by a 400 day weight EBV within the breed’s top 10%. The buyer was William Lloyd Jones who secured Backbone to run with his 40 cow suckler herd based at Penygroes, Caernarfon. “This bull has shape, size and conformation and he’s backed by data for very high growth rates,” he said. Next at 3,900gns was Sarkley Budweiser, a 19 month old from the Pennie family, Chris, Nigel and their father Glyn, of Llandysil, Montgomery. Sired by Balthayock Longbow and out of a homebred cow going back to Moelfre Mecsico, he was knocked down sold to the Howells Partners, Llangynwyd, Bridgend. The May 2006 born Hendy Batman from John and Dianne Rees, Llangurig, sold for 2,800gns to R Jones and Son, Llanfihangel Nant Bran, Brecon. Batman was a Doonally New son and out of a homebred cow by Blelack Equity. Next at 2,700gns was Cambrian Berwyn, a 19 month old Dingle Hofmeister son and out of a Thrunton bred cow. Bred and exhibited by HM Groom, Rhydymain, Dolgellau, the buyer was WT Evans, Ammanford, Carmarthen. Four lots sold with a 2,600gns price tag. First to go was first class prize winner, Waldencourt Budweiser, an 18 month from DH Hinds and Son, Newent, Gloucester. Sired by Balthayock Longbow and out of a Hayes bred cow the buyer was DE Rodderick, Llan Nant Bran, Brecon. The second 2,600gns bid was made by GKE Rees, Rhayader, Powys for the 16 month old youngster, Trefonnen Bandit, another Doonally New son, this time from Mr and Mrs RM Hughes, Trefonnen, Oswestry. Kevin Thomas, Capel Iwan, Newcastle Emlyn offered the other two 2,600gns entries. Moelfre Burton, a August 2006 born Mowbraypark Upshot son sold to H Thomas, Pontardawe, Swansea, while the 18 month old Moelfre Brett, by Allanfauld Norseman and out of a Mowbraypark bred dam went to JT Davies, Llangedwyn, Oswestry. Judge, Paul Clements, Bury St Edmunds, sifted through a quality line up of entries and found his supreme championship in Esgob Bouncer, a 20 month old entry which he described as having ‘size, conformation and great presence’. Bred and exhibited by Gareth Jones, Cwmtirmynach, Bala, he was by Doonally Prince and out of a home bred Grove sired cow. He was one of four entries commanding 2,400gns and sold to Swinnerton Farms, Adbaston, Stafford. The other three entries making 2,400gns each were Wernvale Bruno, a 20 month old by Trefonnen United from ME Evans, Llanrhaeadr, Denbigh to EH Anwyl, Llanbrynmair, Powys; Trannon Bully, a June 2006 born Piatroon Regali son from JA Williams, Caersws to DC Williams, and Son, Cefnllys, Llandrindod Wells; and Sarkley Barney a 16 month old Farleycopse Telemarque son from the Pennie family to BTR Gittins, Welshpool. Females met a strong trade with the top entry at 2,200gns from Mr and Mrs RM Hughes for the June 2006 born heifer, Trefonnen Bambi a Derryharney Outstanding daughter and out of a Coolnaslee sired dam. First in the ring, Brampton Alfie made 3,800gns Solid commercial demand for Charolais bulls underpinned by the premium marketplace for Charolais cross calves set a buoyant trade at the breed society’s official spring show and sale in Welshpool, on Thursday 19 April. Bidding peaked at 5,800gns, a 3,800gns price both started and closed the sale, 31 lots sold to achieve a new centre record average of £2,868 and an 85% clearance was achieved. Sale leader at 5,800gns was the day’s champion, Maerdy Amorist CH23, a 17 month old from Flintshire based vet, Esmor Evans, Mold. A Fairway Soprano son and out of a homebred cow by Maerdy Naser, Amorist qualified for the Welsh Beef Quality Improvement Project (WBQIP). The buyer was TT Jones, Llanbrynmair, Powys. Mr Evans who sold a string of 13 bulls in total, offered his next best Maerdy Agakhan CH27 at 4,800gs to DL Jones, Ammanford, Glamorgan. A WBQIP qualifier, this 21 month old was by Maerdy Naser and out of a home bred cow going back to Glencardon Piper. Another Maerdy Naser son, this time the December 2005 born Maerdy Amaryl CH21 made 4,300gns to HB Tudor, Llanilar, Aberystwyth. The day’s second highest bid at 5,600gns came from father and son team, Glyn and Chris Pennie, Llandyssil, Montgomery for Hendy Archiemac, a 19 month old Allanfauld Vagabond son and out of a Basset Judge sired home bred cow. Archiemac was bred and exhibited by Wyn Rees, Nantyrhendy, Llangurig. Closely followed at 5,500gns was Charbron Achievement, an April 2005 born Caylers Supreme son and out of a hombred cow from Mike Brown, Barons Cross Charolais Stud, Aymestrey, Leominster. The buyers were PW and G Humphreys, Capel Bangor, Aberystwyth. Another entry from Barons Cross, the 21 month old Charbron Ambition by Barnsley Piquet made 3,500gns to BD and CO Pugh, Rhoslefain, Tywyn. Roger Coppinger, Edstaston, Wem offered his Midas Actionman CH26 at 4,000gns to EH and EW Anwyl, Staylittle, Llanbrynmair. A Loganbar Herdsman son, he was out of a homebred cow by Balthayock Matthew. Both the first and the last lots in the ring shared a 3,800gns bid. First to go was Brampton Alfie CH24, a two year old Brampton Ronaldo son from Billy Turner, Skelton on Ure, Ripon. He sold to PL Francis and Son, Leebotwood, Church Stretton. The 13 month old Springfarm Braveheart CH35 commanded the second 3,800gns price tag this time from I and LL Jones, Gaerwen, Anglesey. Bred and exhibited by Peter and Nicola Darlington, Minshall Vernon, Crewe this Mowbraypark Paramount son was out of a Braigiewell bred cow and qualified for the WBQIP.
