Charolais meet unprecedented demand in Newark

5,000gns top; total clearance

The day's Champion, Hamilton Braveheart made 3,000gns

The Reserve Champion, Mortimers Barracuda at 3,200gns

Charolais met an unprecedented demand selling to a top of 5,000gns and achieving a total clearance in Newark on Saturday 26 April at the centre’s inaugural multi-beef breed sale.

 Sale topper at 5,000gns was Brampton Bigwig, a 16 month old by the 8,000gns Kelton Valiant and out of a homebred cow by Bassett Pearlyking. Bred and exhibited by Billy Turner, Skelton on Ure, Ripon, Bigwig who was earlier on was placed third in his class was knocked down sold to AW Richardson and Son, Illam, Ashbourne. 

 Two more Valiant sons from the same breeder were in the money. The 17 month old Brampton Bonzo commanded the day’s second leading call of 3,500gns from Messrs Garthwaite, Caldergrove, Wakefield. Finally, the December 2006 born Brampton Bronco attracted a bid of 1,800gns from A Kirk, Underwood, Nottingham.

 Two lots sold for 3,200gns each. First to go was the 17 month old Newroddige Adonis from Newroddige Charolais, Edingale, Tamworth. A Seawell Icon son and out of a Maerdy bred cow who went back to the 28,000gns Maerdy Primeminister. He sold to the Burling Brothers, Over, Cambridge.

 Mortimers Barracuda, an October 2006 born Mortimers Upstart son claimed the reserve championship for Mortimers Farms, Eastleigh, Hampshire and sold for 3,200gns to P Sherratt, Swadlingcote, Derby.

 The day’s championship was awarded to Hamilton Braveheart, a rising two year old from Chris Turney, Tibberton, Gloucester. A Mortimers Robroy son, he commanded 3,000gns from H Savage, Ridgeway, Sheffield. 

 Females sold to a top of 2,100gns for Holstead Attraction from Jean and Freddie Andrews, Holmfirth. This November 2005 born heifer by the 10,000gns Inverlochy Topsire went to Lincolnshire based breeders, WH Farrow and Sons, Strubby, Alford.
