Charolais smash Welshpool records

Three new centre autumn records: top 12,000gns, £3,744 average, 70 bulls sold

Moelfre Fabulous Supreme Champion and sale leader at 12,000gns

Moelfre Fabulous paraded at the crowded ringside

Charolais smashed pedigree cattle records at an overflowing ringside in Welshpool on Thursday 10 November at the breed society’s autumn fixture where three new centre records were established: a top price of 12,000gns, 70 bulls coming under the hammer sold and an average of £3,744.

“An outstanding show of bulls met an outstanding trade fuelled by the resurgence in demand for Charolais cattle, a reflection of Charolais sired store cattle which have been attracting premium prices throughout the UK at the autumn suckled calf and store sales,” commented the society’s David Benson.

This was the best show of Charolais cattle forward at the Welshpool centre.  Such was the quality of bulls forward, that the judge Alasdair Houston, seven first prize winning bulls averaged £7,994.70p.

Sale leader at 12,000gns was Moelfre Fabulous TI +57, SRI +43, a 21 month old by the 8,500gns Newhouse Chicago and out of a homebred dam from Kevin Thomas, Capel Iwan, Newcastle Emlyn. Fabulous caught my eye – he has great length and topline.”

Fabulous was no stranger to the ring, having secured the reserve breed title at the 2011 Royal Welsh Show, however at Welshpool he went one better and was awarded the supreme championship by the judge, Alasdair Houston who hailed him as a clear winner. “Fabulous was a well-balanced, well finished and powerful bull with breed character; he stood out in his class as well as the final line up and had all the attributes to join a pedigree herd.” For his breeder, Kevin Thomas, Fabulous broke the previous 9,000gns centre record he established just six months ago. “We are thrilled to contribute to another new record and overall, the trade was beyond our expectations.”

Charolais met a solid trade in Welshpool on Thursday 15 April peaking at 7,800gns and establishing two new records; an average £3,360 for 52 lots sold at the breed society’s official spring fixture. Those figures were up on the year by an average of £249 and 12 entries sold.

Gwenog Doodlebug at 7,800gns

Sale leader at 7,800gns was Gwenog Doodlebug, a 20 month old, first class prize winner who was within the breed’s top 10% with a Terminal Index (TI) of +33 and Self Replacing Index (SRI) +40. Bred and exhibited by father and son team, John and Peter Howells, he was out of a Derryharney Outstanding sired homebred cow from their Llanwenog, Llanybydder based 50 cow herd and by the 16,000gns Blelack Tycoon whose 16 sons have sold over the last three years to average £7,000. Doodlebug went to join Alun Williams’ 100 cow suckler herd at Aberdaron, Pwllheli. “This bull had length, a good back end and feet and he had the accompanying Breedplan data to back my judgment,” he said. “I’ve purchased high scoring bulls in the past and found that their calves do actually finish quicker and more efficiently than those by average scoring bulls.”

The Howells enjoyed yet another successful day at the centre when later their second and only other entry, Gwenog Diamond sold for 5,800gns to AL Roberts, Bala. This 17 month old was the same way bred to Doodlebug and earlier on had collected the supreme reserve championship. According to judge Jane Haw, Worth Matravers: “This bull had a lot of shape, muscle and power. In fact there was little between him, Doodlebug and the overall champion, Caylers Dominant who demonstrated great style and presence as soon as he came in to the ring. He had a good top line, hind quarters and was clean through the middle – just the sort of bull I was looking for for the commercial man.”

Caylers Dominant was bred and exhibited by David and Louise Barker, Nuthampstead, Royston who were taking their second supreme title on the third occasion to make the highly successful 240 mile round trip to Welshpool. Sired by Fairway Soprano whose sons have so far sold to 30,000gns, this 18 month old was out of a homebred dam by Killadeas Lloyd from their 30 cow herd. Dominant was knocked down sold for 5,600gns to RP Morgan and Son, Dutlas, Knighton.

Caylers Dominic made 6,500gns

Later on the Barkers sold Caylers Dominic, a 16 month old first class prize winner for the day’s second highest call of 6,500gns to Tynybryn Farms, Tregynon, Newtown. Dominic was a 16 month old by the homebred Caylers Bombadier, a Burradon Talisman son and out of a homebred cow by Lloyd.

Their third and final entry, Caylers Dexter TI +28, SRI +31, another 16 month old, this time by Fairway Soprano and out of a homebred cow going back to Doonally New, made 4,200gns to TL Morris, Knighton.

Midas Dave at 5,200gns

A bid of 5,200gns secured Midas Dave for H and B Powell, Rhayader. Bred and exhibited by Roger Coppinger and his son, Drew, Edstaton, Wem, this 18 month old Oldstone Egbert son was out of a homebred cow going back to Balthayock Matthew.

Esgob Defender sold for 5,000gns

Two entries shared a 5,000gns price tag. First to go was Esgob Defender TI +25, SRI +35, an 18 month old by Thrunton Virginian and out of a homebred cow from Gareth Jones, Cwmtirmynach, Bala. He was knocked down sold to AL Jones, Cwymtirmynach, Bala.

Brynffanigl Dynamo made 5,000gns

The second 5,000gns bid was made late in the day by AG Jones, Llangwm, Corwen for Brynffanigl Dynamo, a 16 month old by the 17,000gns Alsnow Almighty, out of a homebred cow by Mowbraypark Urban and bred by Bob Roberts and his son, Rhion, Abergele.

Trefaldwyn Director at 4,800gns

Next at 4,800gns was the 19 month old Trefaldwyn Director, a Longanbar Herdsman son and out of a homebred cow by Tullygarley Rollerball. Bred by Arwel Owen, Foel, Welshpool, he sold to OLL Jerman and Sons, Carno, Caersws.

The team from Montgomery sold for 4,800gns twice and 4,500gns

Gareth Roberts from the Roberts and Jones partnership, Llangadfan, Powys continued his previous success at Welshpool with a team of three entries including two sharing a 4,800gns bid. First to go was Montgomery Dover TI +27, SRI +28, a 20 month old Tullygarley Attaboy son and out of a homebred cow by Maerdy Ossie to LL Morgan, Llandrindod Wells. The second 4,800gns call was made by B Vale, Birtley, Bucknell for Montgomery Detroit TI +26, SRI +39, a November 2009 born Thrunton Virginian son and out of a homebred cow going back to Baggrave Loggo. Earlier Mr Robert’s third entry, the 21 month old Montgomery Dafydd by Attaboy made 4,500gns to B Bayliss, Whitney-on-Wye, Hereford.
