Reserve Champion, Gwenog Diamond at 5,800gns

Charolais met a solid trade in Welshpool on Thursday 15 April peaking at 7,800gns and establishing two new records; an average £3,360 for 52 lots sold at the breed society’s official spring fixture. Those figures were up on the year by an average of £249 and 12 entries sold.

Gwenog Doodlebug at 7,800gns

Sale leader at 7,800gns was Gwenog Doodlebug, a 20 month old, first class prize winner who was within the breed’s top 10% with a Terminal Index (TI) of +33 and Self Replacing Index (SRI) +40. Bred and exhibited by father and son team, John and Peter Howells, he was out of a Derryharney Outstanding sired homebred cow from their Llanwenog, Llanybydder based 50 cow herd and by the 16,000gns Blelack Tycoon whose 16 sons have sold over the last three years to average £7,000. Doodlebug went to join Alun Williams’ 100 cow suckler herd at Aberdaron, Pwllheli. “This bull had length, a good back end and feet and he had the accompanying Breedplan data to back my judgment,” he said. “I’ve purchased high scoring bulls in the past and found that their calves do actually finish quicker and more efficiently than those by average scoring bulls.”

The Howells enjoyed yet another successful day at the centre when later their second and only other entry, Gwenog Diamond sold for 5,800gns to AL Roberts, Bala. This 17 month old was the same way bred to Doodlebug and earlier on had collected the supreme reserve championship. According to judge Jane Haw, Worth Matravers: “This bull had a lot of shape, muscle and power. In fact there was little between him, Doodlebug and the overall champion, Caylers Dominant who demonstrated great style and presence as soon as he came in to the ring. He had a good top line, hind quarters and was clean through the middle – just the sort of bull I was looking for for the commercial man.”

Caylers Dominant was bred and exhibited by David and Louise Barker, Nuthampstead, Royston who were taking their second supreme title on the third occasion to make the highly successful 240 mile round trip to Welshpool. Sired by Fairway Soprano whose sons have so far sold to 30,000gns, this 18 month old was out of a homebred dam by Killadeas Lloyd from their 30 cow herd. Dominant was knocked down sold for 5,600gns to RP Morgan and Son, Dutlas, Knighton.

Caylers Dominic made 6,500gns

Later on the Barkers sold Caylers Dominic, a 16 month old first class prize winner for the day’s second highest call of 6,500gns to Tynybryn Farms, Tregynon, Newtown. Dominic was a 16 month old by the homebred Caylers Bombadier, a Burradon Talisman son and out of a homebred cow by Lloyd.

Their third and final entry, Caylers Dexter TI +28, SRI +31, another 16 month old, this time by Fairway Soprano and out of a homebred cow going back to Doonally New, made 4,200gns to TL Morris, Knighton.

The team from Montgomery sold for 4,800gns twice and 4,500gns

Gareth Roberts from the Roberts and Jones partnership, Llangadfan, Powys continued his previous success at Welshpool with a team of three entries including two sharing a 4,800gns bid. First to go was Montgomery Dover TI +27, SRI +28, a 20 month old Tullygarley Attaboy son and out of a homebred cow by Maerdy Ossie to LL Morgan, Llandrindod Wells. The second 4,800gns call was made by B Vale, Birtley, Bucknell for Montgomery Detroit TI +26, SRI +39, a November 2009 born Thrunton Virginian son and out of a homebred cow going back to Baggrave Loggo. Earlier Mr Robert’s third entry, the 21 month old Montgomery Dafydd by Attaboy made 4,500gns to B Bayliss, Whitney-on-Wye, Hereford.

Charolais record breakers in new Welshpool market

Three new centre all breeds records set: 8,300gns top and £3,349.50 average for 50 bulls sold

The packed ringside watches the Champion Pedr Dougal come under the hammer

Charolais set a brand new benchmark at Welshpool new centre’s inaugural sale on Thursday 12 November where centre breed records were smashed three times with a top 8,300gns call and £3,349.50 average for 50 bulls traded at the breed society’s official autumn show and sale.

“Charolais has put an immediate stamp on this new state of the art, out of town mart by commanding the best ever trade for the breed in Wales and demonstrating this will be a major centre for future fixtures,” said the society’s David Benson. “Trade was purely driven by commercial men, from a packed ringside, who had achieved success with their Charolais crosses at the autumn suckled calf sales where finishers were prepared to pay premiums simply because of the consistent superior performance of Charolais calves. Commercial suckler producers at the sale were also pleased with the temperament of their Charolais cross calves when preparing them for the autumn sales.”

Sale leader at 8,300gns was the 17 month old Pedr Dougal who earlier in the day had been awarded the supreme championship for Peter Howells, Llanwenog, Llanybyther who was continuing to keep the silverware in the family; his father, John had secured the Welshpool Charolais title on two previous occasions. “Dougal was a tremendous young bull that stood out from the rest; he had shape and length and will grow on to be an excellent crossing sire,” said judge, John Williams, Caersws.

The Champion Pedr Dougal commanded 8,300gns, a centre record

Sired by the 16,000gns Blelack Tycoon, who has so far produced a string of 12 sons to average 8,000gns, Dougal was out of a homebred dam from the Howell’s 50 cow herd who goes back to Gwenog Ivory, dam of the 31,000gns Pedr Thumper. He went to join Wyn Ashton’s 200 cow suckler herd at Cefn Coch, Welshpool. “We’ve used Charolais over the herd for 20 years because the breed leaves calves that gain that the extra weight, they’ve got good temperament and invariably find themselves among the day’s top prices at Welshpool sales,” he said.

Next at 7,500gns was Dorcas Danzig, an 18 month old first prize winner from George and Claire Morris. A Blelack Topgun son, he was out of a Maerdy Ozone sired dam from their 260 cow pedigree herd based at Easington, Aylesbury. Danzig was knocked down sold to DT Richards, Llangynwyd, Maesteg.

Charolais bulls command flying trade in Welshpool

Two new centre all breeds records: 6,600gns top and £3,111 average

Welshpool all breeds centre record holder and Reserve Champion, Brynffanigl Cracker at 6,600gns

Charolais met a flying trade in Welshpool on Thursday 16 April where bidding achieved two new centre all breeds records - a top of 6,600gns and £3,111 average for 40 lots traded at the breed society’s official spring show and sale.

The event marked a fitting end to 35 years of pedigree Charolais sales at the mart prior to relocating to a new out of town auction centre before the end of the year, according to auctioneer, John Jones. “Over the years we have encouraged Charolais breeders to bring quality bulls to Welshpool and they are certainly being rewarded; the day’s bouyant trade generated by suckler men reflected the premiums their Charolais cross calves are consistently commanding at this centre,” he said.

Sale leader at 6,600gns was the day’s reserve champion, Brynffanigl Cracker, an 18 month old from Bob Roberts and his son, Rheon who were enjoying the second consecutive highest entry in Welshpool within five months. Cracker was by Derryharney Outstanding and out of a Blelack Ladysman sired homebred dam from their 35 cow herd based at Brynffanigl Uchaf, Abergele. The buyers were Brian and Craig Davies who run a 80 cow suckler herd at Rhayader. “Cracker was the pick of the day’s crop, he demonstrated everything in the right places and we were determined to take him home,” said Craig.

Bailea Cosmic made 5,500gns

Sired by Burradon Talisman, this 18 month old was out of a Burnaston bred cow going back to Oldstone Egbert. According to judge, Steven Nesbitt, “Charlie along with the reserve champion, Brynffanigl Cracker were by far the pick of the top quality bulls suited to the commercial man. There was little between them, however Charlie just had the edge, with a better top and locomotion.”

For Roger Coppinger, it was his most successful day in 15 years of attending Welshpool. He eventually went on to head the female trade with a 2,150gns for Midas Bambi, a two year old maiden and second prize class winner. Commercial demand drives Welshpool Charolais to 5,400gns

Sale leader, Brynffanigl Cannon at 5,400gns

Reserve champion, Esgob Crackerjack at 4,400gns

Supreme champion, Bailea Crosby made 4,400gns

Trefaldwyn Celtic sold for 4,000gns

Suckler men fuelled a solid trade for Charolais bulls in Welshpool on Thursday 13 November at the breed society’s official autumn show and sale, where bidding peaked at 5,400gns and 40 lots sold to average £2,626 accompanied by a 75% clearance.

“This event was the busiest ever at the centre; the ringside was heaving, averages were up £400 a head on the year and we sold 30% more bulls,” commented BCCS’s David Benson. “Trade certainly reflected the fact that Charolais sired calves are consistently commanding premiums this season on a weight for weight, age for age basis, over all other suckled calves. Furthermore, it was worth noting that this was the first sale in Welshpool since HCC’s three year Welsh Beef Quality Improvement Project and its accompanying support package came to an end.”

Sale leader at 5,400gns was Brynffanigl Cannon, a 19 month old from Bob Roberts, Brynffanigl Uchaf, Abergele. A Mowbraypark Urban son and out of a dam bred from homebred lines, the buyer was G Jones, Llanrwst, Conwy.

Next at 4,400gns was Esgob Crackerjack, an April 2007 born entry from Gareth Jones, Cwmtirmynach, Bala to WO Jones, Criccieth. Earlier on in the day Crackerjack had been awarded the overall reserve championship by judge, Ben Harman who described him as ‘genuinely classy’. “He is another wonderful bull by the 18,000gns Thrunton Virginian who is leaving that consistent quality.” Virginian is by Burradon Talisman, sire of the 55,000gns Perth supremo Thrunton Voldemort.

Mr Harman went on to find his supreme championship in the 19 month old Bailea Crosby who was bred and exhibited by Brian Jones, Heol Senni, Brecon. “While there was little between the bulls in the final line up, Crosby was bang on 12 o’clock for this event,” said Mr Harman. “He was full of meat, he had scale, an outstanding spring of rib, and he was beautifully presented.” Sired by Suzeringie and out of a homebred cow going back to Gower lines, Crosby sold for 4,000gns to IW Roberts, Dolgwyddelan, Conwy.

Two more lots were knocked down sold for 4,000gns each. First class prize winner, Trefaldwyn Celtic, a May 2007 born entry by Burradon Talisman made 4,000gns to local producer, RT Jones, Dolanog, Welshpool.

A 19 month old Gretnahouse Vigorous son and out of a dam going back to Dingle Hofmeister, he went home with S and I Williams, Pantydwr, Rhayader. Later in the day, Mr Thomas offered another Vigorous son, this time Moelfre Cadet a 17 month old out of a homebred dam by Doonally New and he made 3,200gns to EH Anwyl, Staylittle, Llanbrynmair.

Two lots shared a 3,600gns price tag. First to go was Hendy Columbo, a 20 month old by Tullygarley Rollerball and out of a Moyness sired Nibheath dam. Bred and exhibited by John and Diane Rees, Llangurig, Llanidloes, the buyer was M Price, Upper Chapel, Brecon. Another Rollerball son from the same stable, this time the 22 month old Hendy Count, made 3,200gns to Messrs Edwards, Manafon, Welshpool.

The day’s second 3,600gns call came from IW Roberts, Dolgwyddelan, Conwy for Maerdy Canada, an April 2007 born entry from Flintshire vet, Esmor Evans, Mold. Canada was by Maerdy Padirac and out of a homebred cow by Maerdy Grimaldi. Later on the same vendor offered at 3,000gns the June 2007 born Maerdy Crown, bred from homebred bloodlines, to RNI Waters, Clun, Craven Arms.

The female trade was topped at 1,850gns by Gaer Ophelia, a 10 year old Maerdy Iceman daughter from TE Jones, Welshpool. Ophelia was sold with her July born twin bulls calves at foot, Gaer Diplomat and Gaer Duke, by Kilcullen Ted, sire of Doonally New. The buyer was Peter Darlington, Minshull Vernon, Crewe.
