of £3,943 at the multi beef breed show and sale staged in
Stirling,
on Monday 3 May.

Top priced Thrunton Donatello
Sale
topper was the Thrunton Donatello, a 22 month old by Burradon Talisman and
out of a homebred cow by the
25,000gns
Perth champion, Mowbraypark Orlando. Bred by the
Campbell family, Ian, John and their father, Colin, Thrunton,
Alnwick, Donatello was secured in a joint split by Fifeshire producers, WM
Arnot, Leven and John Whiteford and Son, Cupar.
At 4,000gns, the
Campbells
offered the 18 month old Thrunton Delgado, a same way bred Talisman son and
out of an
Orlando
sired cow, to the Crofters Commission,
Inverness.
The day’s second highest Charolais
call at 5,200gns was made for Blelack Deputy, a 21 month old Coolnaslee
Adversary son and out of a homebred cow by Maerdy Neptune. Bred by father
and son team, Neil and Graeme Massie, Dinnet, Aboyne, he returned to the
north east with AA Younger, Castletown, Thurso.

Blelack Deputy
Next at 4,800gns was Allanfauld
Daviegray from Archie MacGregor, Kilsyth,
Glasgow
to G Sordy and Sons, Whittingham, Alnwick. This two year old was by the
homebred Allanfauld Vangogh, a Moyness Lincoln son, and out of a homebred
cow by
Mortimers Roselier who goes back to the celebrated Burke trophy
winner, Mowbraypark Gigi.
Another Vangogh son from the same
breeder, this time the 20 month old Allanfauld Domperignon made 4,000gns to
Easter Tulloch, Laurencekirk.
Two entries shared a 4,500gns bid.
First to go was Harviestoun Denver, a 20 month old who was within the
breed’s top 10% with a Terminal Index (TI) of +30 and Self Replacing Index
(SRI) +38. Sired by Ravensworth Unwin, and out of a homebred dam going back
to Blelack Navigator,
Denver
was bred by Lucy Poett, Dollar, and was knocked down sold to J Anderson and
Sons, Duns, Berwick.
The 19 month old Midlock Dragon
secured the second 4,500gns price tag for Mr and Mrs John Wight, Midlock,
Bigger from Glenrinnes Farms, Dufftown,
Banff.
An Allanfauld Voltage son, he was out of a homebred cow by Inverlochy
Upbeat.
Two more lots sold to 4,000gns each.
First through the ring was Westcarse Dram from John Christie,

Charolais met a dynamic trade in Stirling on Wednesday 16 February, where
bidding peaked at 26,000gns, 18 lots sold for five figure sums and a new UK
all Continental beef breeds average of £6,072 was established for 163 lots
traded, a figure representing 80% clearance.
“The event attracted an extremely consistent solid trade throughout the five
hour fixture culminating in yet another record for a
UK
centre and confirming once again Charolais’ leading role in the beef
sector,” commented the British Charolais Cattle Society chairman, Iain
Millar. “Charolais enthusiasts who travelled from as far a field as Shetland
to Dorset demonstrated they were prepared to dig deep, confident their
investment would leave a worthy return. Charolais cross calves are
continuing to not only leave premiums at the suckled calf sales up and down
the country, but the differential over all other crosses has continued to
widen. Added to that is commercial producers’ demand for stock with quiet
temperament.”
The day’s leading 26,000gns entry came late in the day for the 16 month old
Goldies Detour who was within the breed’s top 20% with a Terminal Index (TI)
+28 and Self Replacing Index (SRI) +35. Bred and exhibited by Hamish Goldie,
Ruthwell,
Dumfries
this first prize class winner was bred from homebred lines; his sire was
Goldies Banker who goes back to Oldstone Egbert and he was out Goldies
Violin, a Thrunton Trademark daughter. The buyer was Charlie Boden who runs
the 100 cow herd based at
Stockport
and whose last major purchase was four years ago with Thrunton Voldemort at
55,000gns in a joint split with Esmor Evans. “Detour was clean through the
middle and he had a good second thigh,” he said. “Moreover, Detour should
complement Voldemort’s daughters; both these bulls go back to the 25,000gns
Perth
supremo, Mowbraypark Orlando.”
Mr Boden recouped some of his spend earlier on when he sold the 18 month old
Sportmans Dreadnaught TI +23, SRI + 31 for 11,000gns to WR Mill, Westfield,
Thurso. One of 10 Voldemort sons who so far have come under the hammer sold
to average more than £10,000, he was out of a homebred dam by Maerdy Rome
and whose damline goes back to the 24,000gns Perth
supreme, Ugie Legend.
Hamish Goldie went on to sell 12 lots in total to average £9,511 and enjoy
one of his best days of trading since restocking, with bulls sired by
homebred sires reflecting the herd’s consistency. Moreover, the previous day
he was awarded a double placing in the final line up taking both junior
titles. “This was an amazing first time achievement for the family in more
than 40 years of exhibiting at the event,” he said. Reserve junior honours
went to Goldies Decider TI +48, SRI +52, a 16 month old by the 25,000gns
Perth supreme champion and Royal Highland junior interbreed champion,
Goldies Unbeatable and out of a homebred dam by the 34,000gns Perth
champion, Goldies Uppermost. He made 14,000gns to WD Mundell and Son,
Clovenfords, Galashiels.
Next lot through the ring was Goldies Deposit TI +30, SRI +36, an October
2008 born Goldies Banker son and out of a Goldies Uppermost sired homebred
dam. He made 9,500gns to David Cooper, Kincaldrum, Forfar.
At 11,000gns the 20 month old Goldies Diademe TI +32, SRI +38 sold to
Mountquhanie Farms, Cupar,
Fife.
Sired by the 10,000gns Balthayock Ulex, he was out of a homebred dam by
Blelack Rustic. Taking the overall junior championship title was the 16
month old Goldies Detective TI +23, SRI +27, another Goldies Banker son and
out of a homebred dam from Hamish’s 95 cow herd going back to Derryharney
Peter. Detective was secured for 8,500gns by A Sharp and Sons, Tough,
Alford.
The second team to take the limelight was the Adam family, Drew, Bob and
Kay, Newhouse of Glamis, Glamis, with a double placing in the intermediate
section. However their success didn’t stop there; their 18 month old
intermediate champion, Newhouse Dingdong TI +38, SRI +45 was minutes later
hailed by the judge, Gilbert Crawford, Maghera, as the overall supreme
champion. “Dingdong was an outstanding bull and as soon as he came in to the
ring I knew he was the winner,” he said after his five hour judging stint.
“This bull demonstrated all the Charolais criteria; he was clean and
lengthy, he had power, bone and a clean back end.”
For the Adam’s it was their fourth
supreme title at the event in more than 30 years of breeding pedigree
Charolais. “We’re thrilled to bits not just with the championship but the
fact we’ve never before had a champion and reserve double in the same
section,” said Bob.
Sired by the 14,000gns Sackville Adonis, Newhouse Dingdong went to join
David Fattorini’s 60 cow herd based at Tockwith, York for the day’s second
highest call of 22,000gns. “He was just one of two bulls entered in the
catalogue whose whole character impressed me and who is suitable to put over
my herd,” he said.
For the Adam family, 22,000gns was their second highest joint price ever and
it contributed to them achieving the day’s leading average with six lots
coming under the hammer sold for £12,110. Next was the reserve intermediate
champion, Newhouse Diablo TI
+30, SRI +35, a 19 month old by the 30,000gns Silver Joss and out of a
homebred cow by the 20,000gns Blelack Rustic. At 15,000gns he attracted the
day’s highest commercial bid from Jim Warnock who runs a 180 cow suckler
herd, at Dreva, Biggar, however minutes later outside the ring he sold a
half share of Diablo to John Green, Lilliesleaf, Melrose.
The Adam’s next two highest entries were 18 month olds by Sackville Adonis.
Newhouse Delboy TI +29, SRI +37, who was out of homebred dam by Balnuith
Ringleader made 14,000gns to TA Jones, Dryslwyn, Carmarthen while Newhouse
Demitri TI +27, SRI + 33, went for 10,000gns to James and Vanessa Webb,
Billesdon, Leicester.
Elgin
Darthvader TI +16, SRI +22, a 20 month old from the Milne family, Lhanbryde,
Elgin
commanded the first of a string of 11,000gns bids. Sired by Gower Versace
and out of a homebred dam by Rumsden Samurai, he returned to the north east
with B Keir and Son, Craigievar, Alford. Minutes later the Milnes were in
the money again at 10,000gns when they offered another June 2008 born
Versace son, Elgin Dalmally TI +23, SRI +29 to James Herdman, Edlingham
Newtown, Alnwick.
The Campbell family, Ian, John and their father, Colin, of Thrunton, Alnwick
once again lifted the title for the best group of three bulls and went on to
sell a string of 11 entries to average £7,234. Their trade was led at
11,000gns by Thrunton Denzil TI +41, SRI +48 who 24 hours earlier had
collected the reserve senior title. Secured by M and I Stele, Banchory,
Denzil was by Gretnahouse Archangel and out of a member of the Verity family
who has produced a long line of noted bulls including the Thrunton Socrates
and Thrunton Camelot, both at 25,000gns.
Later in the day the
Campbells
went on to lead the female trade at 6,000gns with a cow and calf pair to WA
Black, Torphins, Banchory. Thrunton Belinda was a heifer by the 25,000gns
Mowbraypark
Orlando
and out of a homebred dam by the 11,000gns Haymount Jetstream. She sold with
her three month old bull calf at foot, Thrunton Errol by the 22,000gns
Newhouse Bigal.
The 19 month old Carwood Darwin TI +24, SRI +29, bred and exhibited by Colin
Wight, Biggar attracted 11,000gns from Kingcraigie Farms, Lumphannan,
Banchory. Sired by Kelton Trident he was out of a homebred dam going back to
the family’s Midlock Russell.
Heading the trade for
Northern Ireland
breeders at 11,000gns was Sandelford Duggan TI +29, SRI +32, a Goldies Usher
son and out of a homebred cow by Drummeer Major. Bred by George and Gary
Henderson, Bushmills, Antrim he travelled on to
Caithness
with JA Morris, Thurso.
The final 11,000gns call was made by the Ellis and Keir partnership,
Glenkindie,
Aberdeen
for the 17 month old Harviestoun Declan, a Ravensworth Unwin son bred and
exhibited by Lucy Poett, Dollar Perth.
Judge, Gilbert Crawford claimed to find ‘little between’ his overall supreme
champion and his overall reserve and senior champion, Chunal Dougie TI +31,
SRI +36 who went on to claim the first of the day’s six, 10,000gns bids.
Sired by Corrie Alan and out of the Dingle Hofmeister sired Chunal Roxy who
has produced three class prize winners in
Carlisle,
Dougie was bred and exhibited by Mark McGahan, Hadfield, Glossop, who
established his seven cow herd 15 years ago and was making his debut at the
event with the sole entry. “It’s been my ambition to win the
Perth
title, however I didn’t expect to get almost all the way there on my first
outing. It’s almost been a dream come true.” Dougie went home with Jane Haw
herd manager to Mr and Mrs Andrew White’s Balbithan herd, Worth Matravers,
Swanage.
Midlock Dave, a 20 month old by Allanfauld Voltage and out of an Allanfauld
Nutcase sired cow bred and exhibited by Mr and Mrs John Wight, Midlock,
Biggar commanded a 10,000gns bid from W Dunlop and Sons, Innerwick, Dunbar.
The final 10,000gns call was made for Balthayock Duke TI +43, SRI +47, a 19
month old by the 8,000gns Balmyle Thunderbird and out of a Barbican Lancer
sired dam from Major David Walter, Balthayock, Perth. The buyer was Stephen
Allardyce, Tarland, Aboyne.
Leading a string of 11 bulls to average £7,612 from father and son team,
Neil and Graeme Massie, Dinnet, Aboyne was the 10,000gns Blelack Deveron TI
+30, SRI +34, a 21 month old by Coolnaslee Adversary and out of a Blelack
Montgomery sired dam. He sold to Peter Foulger, Loxwood, Billinghurst. The
Massie’s next best at 9,500gns was
Blelack Dubair, a 15 month old youngster by Thrunton Socrates and out of a
homebred dam going back to the 15,000gns Maerdy Oxo. The buyer was J
Riddell, Kenmay, Inverurie. Blelack Damion TI+32, SRI +36 followed next at
9,000gns to Pat Wilson Farms, Almondbank,
Perth.
This rising two year old was by the 12,000gns
Perth
supreme champion Cargriff Victorious and out of a homebred cow by Balthayock
Lombardo.
John and Raymond Irvine, Toumintoul, Ballindalloch offered their best at
9,500gns to Macfarlane Farms, Duns, Berwick. Inverlochy Dali TI +32, SRI +38
was the first of Lochend Apache’s crop of calves and out of a Thrunton
Impeccable sired homebred dam.
Inverlochy Dagan TI +38, SRI +42 , another Apache son and out of an
Inverlochy Resolve sired cow made 8,000gns to G Fergus, Westray, Orkney.
Cumbria
breeder, Peter Vasey, Wetheral,
Carlisle
was in the money at 9,000gns with his Edenhurst Denver TI +35, SRI +39
changing hands to RC Woodburn Galashiels. This 19 month old Dingle
Hofmeister son was out of a homebred dam by Edenhurst Titus.
Two bulls making a successful one way trip over the water for 9,000gns each
came from Adrian Richardson, Maguiresbridge, Fermanagh. First to go was
Hillviewfarm Deserve, an 18 month old Allanfauld Vagabond son and out of a
Coolnaslee bred cow by Derrygriff Mills. He sold to DJ Prosser, Brecon. The
same vendor later offered Tonaghmore Duke, a 17 month old sired by
Tonaghmore Augusto and bred by H Crawford. He was secured for a 9,000gns bid
by EF Burnett, Kippen,
Stirling.
Escalating demand for females was reflected in the day’s bouyant trade led
at 6,000gns for the cow and bull calf pair from Thrunton. The
Campbell
family also sold at 4,200gns Thrunton Betsy, another heifer this time by
Solwayfirth Union and offered with her four month old bull calf, Thrunton
Ernest by Bigal. The pair were secured by
W Riddoch,
Grange, Keith.
Neil Caul’s (Liff,
Dundee)
draft of nine entries was headed at 5,000gns by Balnuith Uptowngirl, a
Lochend Pirate daughter and out of an Ellern bred dam. She was sold with her
nine month old heifer at foot by the £30,000 Moyness Vivacious to WA Black,
Torphins, Banchory.
The female championship went to Dunesk Carol, a three year old heifer by
Burradon Talisman and out of a Moyness Statesman bred cow from Jimmy
McMillan, Farnell, Brechin. Carol was sold with Dunesk Fifi, her one month
old heifer calf at foot by Thrunton Unstoppable for 5,200gns to J Hepburn &
Company, North House, Hawick, Roxburghshire.
Averages: 163 bulls £6,072; eight heifers £3,176.25; Balnuith: seven lots
£2,399.25; Thrunton: three lots £4,794.30; Glenbrae: two lots £2,730;

Charolais bulls met
a firm trade peaking at 26,000gns in Stirling on Wednesday, 23 October; 11
lots reached five figures, while 132 lots traded to achieve a £5,687 record
average for the breed’s official autumn fixture as well as a first all beef
breeds record average for the new centre.
“Charolais’ dominance continued from
Perth to Stirling, in fact it went from strength to strength with the number
of bulls sold up by more than 20% on the year and averages up £123 per
head,” commented British Charolais Cattle Society chairman, Iain Millar.
“Trade was market led throughout by suckler producers who were aware that
Charolais crosses have not only consistently commanded premiums this season,
but an even bigger price differential over other Continental crosses simply
because of their fast and efficient growth and ability to finish to heavier
weights which no longer suffer a penalty. These suckler men were selecting
bulls that could put the scales down by leaving calves with length and
weight, and also with accompanying Breedplan data.”
Sale
leader at 26,000gns was the event’s senior champion, the 19 month old
Balmyle Dickler from Bill Bruce, Balmyle, Meigle, Perthshire. Sired by the
14,000gns Sackville Adonis, he was out of Balmyle Ripple, a daughter of the
28,000gns Brampton Nacodar, and who is regarded as one of the 85 cow herd’s
most consistent breeding females. Dickler who is in the breed’s top 5% with
a TI +36 and SRI +42, was commended by judge and under bidder, Esmor Evans
for his ‘hind quarters, loin and great presence’. He was knocked down sold
to the
Campbell
family, Colin and sons, John and Ian who commented: “We regarded him as the
best bull in the sale; we liked his looks and his breeding because he’s a
complete outcross for our 130 cow herd.”
The Campbells shortly recouped some
of their spend when they offered the 20 month old Thrunton Daredevil TI +25,
SRI +34, at their day’s highest of 9,500gns to George Wordie, Glass,
Huntley. A Burradon Talisman son, he was out of a homebred cow by Blelack
Jaguar. Daredevil was the first of their six entries by Talisman selling to
average over 6,500gns and including Thrunton Defiance TI +26, SRI +36, a
first class winning 18 month old at 9,000gns to William Barbour, New Abbey,
Dumfries and Thrunton Diplomat TI +21, SRI +32, another 18 month old class
winner this time at 8,500gns to OT Chandler, Crucorney, Abergavenny.
Bill Bruce went on
to sell a string of seven bulls to average almost 8,500gns including two
more 19 month old Adonis sons, Balmyle Drambuie TI +33, SRI +38 at 9,000gns
to Evans, Corfield and Son, Bishop’s Castle and Balmyle Digby TI +30, SRI
+36 to CG McGillivray, Ballindalloch.
Mr Bruce
invested some of the takings later in the day when he bid 12,000gns for
Pennal Dazzller, a May 2008 born Dingle Hofmeister son and out of a
Killadeas Jack sired homebred cow, Pennal Violet. Bred and exhibited by
Alwyn Rees, Pennal, Machynlleth, this second class prize winner was
accompanied by some of the highest Breedplan data in the catalogue with a TI
+54 and SRI +62. He was also placed second in the society’s Young Promising
Bulls register.
Two
bulls shared the day’s second leading 16,000gns price tag. First was
Blackford Dynamite, the intermediate and overall supreme champion bred and
exhibited by Anne MacPherson, Dalcross, Inverness who described her success
as a ‘dream come true’ having established a five cow herd based on Thrunton
bloodlines less than 10 years ago. “While my family has secured the Perth
Simmental championship title on a handful of occasions with homebred cattle,
for me winning the supreme Charolais title is in another league, and despite
being my best ever bull I’ve bred, taking home the silverware was beyond my
wildest expectations,” she said. For judge and Flintshire vet, Esmor Evans
who has taken the championship on seven occasions, Dynamite was ‘on the day
very difficult to fault’, he said. “He was very well fleshed, very correct
and he had real style.”
Sired by
the 15,000gns Burradon Talisman, the 18 month old was out of a homebred cow
by Killadeas Jack and going back to Thrunton lines. The buyers were father
and son team, Stuart and David Bothwell, Ballinamallard,
County
Fermanagh who keen to
introduce the combined Talisman and Jack lines to join their 35 cow
Killadeas herd. “We needed a new stock bull and Dynamite was our first
choice; he was the perfect bull and we liked his genetics,” said Stuart.
The
second 16,000gns call was made later in the day by Brian McAllister, Kells,
Ballymena for the junior champion, Clyth Diplomat TI +26, SRI +34, the
youngest catalogued entry at 14 months old. An Oldstone Egbert son, he was
out of Clyth Vanilla who goes back to Beauchamp Foreman and was just one of
two pedigree Charolais cows owned by Ronnie MacKay and running alongside a
50 cow suckler herd at Lybster,
Caithness. While Mr Mackay was making his debut at the Perth Bulls Sales, Diplomat
was no stranger to the ring having been awarded the supreme championship at
Caithness and the male breed award at Black Isle earlier this year.
Minutes
later the first of two entries at 15,000gns was knocked down sold. Goldies
Dynamite TI +46, SRI +52 was an 18 month old regarded by Hamish Goldie as a
‘combination of the best bloodlines together with exceptional Breedplan
figures’. This one from his 95 cow herd based at Ruthwell,
Dumfries was by Goldies Ambassador who goes back to Blelack Ripple, dam of the
25,000gns Goldies Unbeatable, while Dynamite’s dam was Goldies Verynice, a
full sister to the
34,000gns
Perth
champion,
Goldies Uppermost.
The buyers were father and son team, Neil and Graeme Massie, Blelack, Dinnet,
Aboyne.
The
Goldies also offered for 6,000gns Goldies Derek, a 16 month old by the
10,000gns
Perth
reserve intermediate champion, Newroddige Venture and out of a
homebred dam by the 20,000gns Blelack Rustic. Derek was knocked down sold to
RG Stuart, Rothiemay, Huntly.
The
second 15,000gns bid was made for Gower Drambuie TI +37, SRI +42 who
achieved the best ever price for Richard and Alison Tucker in the 20 years
they have been making the frequent 1,000 mile round trip to Perth from
Gower, Swansea. Led out by their son Will, Drambuie was a 17 month old
Dingle Hofmeister son and out of Gower Sangria who hails from a family that
is consistently breeding five figure bulls. He went to join Iain and Dot
Goldie’s Solwayfirth herd, Cummertrees, Annan.
Willie
Whyte, Fraserburgh achieved his highest price ever when he took 11,000gns
from T Smith and Son, Whitehouse, Alford for his Hindstones Daimler TI +26,
SRI +34, an 18 month old by the 8,500gns Trafaldwyn Valiant and out of a
homebred cow going back to Padeswood Mercedes.
Another
Welsh team making a worthwhile 800 round mile trip were John Howells and his
son, Peter, Llanwenog, Llanybydder, with their sole entry, Gwenog Danzyboy
who headed his class and went on to command a second 11,000gns bid from S
Sinclair, Latheron, Caithness. The 16 month old Danzyboy was by the
16,000gns Blelack Tycoon whose eight sons sold in
Perth have averaged 7,500gns, while he was out of a homebred cow going back to
Derryharney Outstanding.
Four
lots shared a 10,000gns price tag. First to go was Alwent Dollar TI +41, SRI
+49, an April 2008 born bull, second class prize winner and sole entry from
Stephen Nesbitt who was enjoying one of his best ever days in 30 years at
the event. This one was sired by Alwent Vougeot, one of the top 10 young

Charolais met an explosive trade in
Perth
on Wednesday 18 February, where bidding peaked at an equal centre record of
55,000gns and a new all Continental beef breeds average of £6,062 was
established for 195 lots traded, a figure representing 93% clearance.(190
lots were sold through the ring with a further 5 lots sold after the sale,
and booked through the auctioneers office) The event marked a fitting end to
the major pedigree beef fixtures at the centre where Charolais has reigned
supreme with the highest number of all breeds of bulls sold and with the
accompanying top average.
A total of 7,691 Charolais bull have sold for the highest average of
£3,883 during the Perth Huntingtower centre’s 19 year span at the breed
society’s official fixtures within the multi-beef breed weeks staged in
February and October. In addition, Charolais holds the centre breed record
of 55,000gns on two occasions.
“The event attracted what amounted to be the hottest trade ever at a
UK
centre and confirmed yet again Charolais’ leading role in the beef sector,”
commented the British Charolais Cattle Society chairman, Iain Millar.
“Breeders offered bulls to suit all pockets to buyers at the crammed
ringside who travelled from as far a field as Orkney to Cornwall to take
home a slice of the action which reflected the true demand for Charolais
cross cattle in the commercial marketplace. Charolais crosses are not only
continuing to demonstrate that unbeatable weight for age and superb rearing
efficiency, but they are also enabling finishers to exploit their true
genetic potential by taking them to heavier carcase weights in the
unrestricted market. Consequently, Charolais is leaving enviable rewards for
both suckler producer and finishers.”
UA auctioneer, David Leggat added: “We’re thrilled, absolutely
delighted. This was one of the best entries of quality cattle forward which
attracted leading commercial beef producers prepared to pay 5,000gns,
10,000gns or more for a bull, a trend that reflects today’s finished and
cull cow marketplace. To attract another 55,000gns call was the icing on the
cake.”
The day’s top 55,000gns call was made for Sportsmans Columbo TI +29,
SRI +38, a 19 month old first prize winner from the
Cheshire
based Boden and Davies partnership, Mellor,
Stockport.
The hotly tipped Columbo comprised a superb blend of genetics; he was the
first son in the ring by the match priced 55,000gns Thrunton Voldemort, and
he was out of a homebred cow by the 26,000gns Perth champion, Ugie Legend,
while her great grand-dam was the 26,000gns female record holder,
DeCrespigny Debutante. Tipping the scales at 1,095kg, Columbo had a 400 day
weight within the breed’s top 1%.
“Fantastic, we’re thrilled to bits,” commented Charlie Boden. “We knew
Columbo was very special from day one because of the strength of his
combined genetics; he goes back to DeCrespigny lines which have consistently
bred cattle with scale, scope and style, and are the bedrock of our 70 cow
herd.” Columbo is scheduled to work across two herds with a total of 110
pedigree cows after being secured in a two way bid between Gilbert Crawford,
of Maghera,
Derry
and breed newcomer, Joe Wilson, Newry,
County
Down.
“This bull has got to be the best I’ve seen in the 50 years I’ve been
travelling to
Perth,”
said Mr Crawford. “He’s got something about him; muscle and power combined
with style and class. The fact he’s by Voldemort made him that little bit
more appealing.”
The event witnessed the much awaited arrival of the first sons by
Thrunton Voldemort who was purchased by Mr Boden and Flintshire vet, Esmor
Evans, Mold, in a two way split for a new 55,000gns centre breed record back
in February 2006. Mr Boden’s other two Voldemort sons sold to average
6,500gns, while Mr Evans’ three entries levelled at 6,000gns.
Esmor Evans’ much admired Maerdy Championlad TI +32, SRI +36
attracted the event’s second highest call of 28,000gns from Columbo’s under
bidders, Swalesmoor Charolais, Eaglesfield, Dumfries. This 18 month old
first class prize winner with a TI and SRI within the breed’s top 10%, was
by Vald’or-ra and out of a homebred dam by the noted bull Maerdy Grimaldi. “Championlad
is just very correct throughout; power, tremendous quality, great legs, a
lovely character and with good figures to match,” summed up herd manager,
Iain Campbell. In fact, Swalesmoor invested virtually all their day’s
takings in the one entry to join their 40 cow herd. Their topper at 8,000gns
to Major David Walter, Balthayock,
Perth
was Swalesmoor Cracker TI +63, SRI +72, the highest Breedplan recorded entry
in the Charolais Herdbook. He was a September 2007 born son by the 34,000gns
Perth
champion, Goldies Uppermost and out of Blelack Viola, a son of the 25,000gns
Perth
champion, Thrunton Socrates.
The Campbell family, Ian and John and their father, Colin, Thrunton,
Alnwick continued their winning success by lifting the overall supreme
championship for the sixth time in 15 years, on this occasion with the aptly
named Thrunton Crownprince TI +31, SRI +40. This 19 month old who was
initially awarded the intermediate championship before going all the way,
caught judge, John Campbell, the Balthayock herd manager`s eye shortly after
he came into the ring. “I found two tremendous bulls in the one class,
however it was Crownprince who stood out in the first turn around; he
demonstrated the real qualities of a Charolais bull – he had power, strength
and volume; he really filled the eye.” Crownprince was also among the
Campbells
champion group of three.
For the
Campbells,
the fixture marked yet another memorable occasion which witnessed them
selling their entire string of 15 entries forward to average close on
7,000gns. “We’re really delighted as a family to be taking the silverware
back home to Northumberland,” commented Ian, “We’re also pleased to see
Thrunton’s genetics continuing to perform well for other Charolais
breeders.”
Crownprince is by Burradon Talisman and a paternal brother to
Thrunton Voldemort, while he is the first bull calf out of a homebred dam
going back to the 25,000gns
Perth
supremo, Mowbraypark Orlando who has bred three of the
Campbell’s
Perth
sales supreme champions. Crownprince who was within the breed’s top 1% on
400 day weight and SRI at +46, and top 10% TI at +31, was secured for
20,000gns, the day’s third highest call, by John Wilson and Sons who run the
60 pedigree cow Kinclune herd at Glenkindie, Alford.
The
Campbells
went on to offer their next best at 12,000gns twice. First to go was
Thrunton Condor TI +20, SRI +25, a Solwayfirth Union son and out of a
homebred dam by Maerdy Location. He went to run with Jim Warnock’s suckler
herd based at Broughton, Biggar.
The Campbells second 12,000gns bid went to Thrunton Classic TI +22,
SRI +30 an 18 month old first prize winner by Talisman and out of a homebred
cow by Mortimers Politican. He sold to Peter Howells, Llanwenog, Llanybydder
to join the Pedr and Gwenog herds amounting to 45
cows, which he manages with his father, John.
Earlier on in the day, Peter Howells went a long way to recouping his
spend when he sold the 20 month old Gwenog Captain TI +25, SRI +33, for
10,000gns to James Forbes and his sons, Hamish and Euan, to run with their
30 cow pedigree herd and 400 sucklers based at Nairn. It was Captain who 24
hours earlier had been cited by judge, John Campbell as the second
‘tremendous’ bull in the show ring and he followed Thrunton Crownprince all
the way through the lines to stand in reserve intermediate position and
finally take the overall reserve supreme championship. “I was chuffed to
bits, if not just a little surprised,” said Peter who in the last six years
has made several successful 900 mile round trips from Ceredigion to Perth
including with Pedr Thumper, who was the same way bred as Captain, he stood
in exactly the same overall reserve championship slot and made 31,000gns.
Captain was by the 16,000gns Blelack Tycoon and out of a homebred dam by the
18,000gs Derryharney Outstanding.
Peter Howells’ next best at 8,500gns was Gwenog Champion, another 20
month old Blelack Tycoon son and out of a Derryharney Outstanding sired dam.
The buyers were Messrs Brewis, Chester Hill, Belford.
Peter Heath, Hartfield, East Sussex was enjoying his best ever day at Perth
in more than 20 years of regularly making the 1,000 mile plus round trip.
Leading lot at 20,000gns was Sackville Casanova TI +34, SRI +40, a 19 month
old by Balthayock Longbow and out of a homebred dam going back to
DeCrespigny Regent. He was secured by John Jeffrey, Kersknowe, Kelso to run
with his 60 cow herd. “Casanova is a very well fleshed bull with a very good
back end and coupled with phenomenal figures,” said Mr Jeffrey. His Terminal
Index, Self Replacing lndex and his Calving Ease Direct EBV were all within
the breed’s top 5%.
Mr Heath’s one and only other entry, Sackville Claudius TI +40, SRI
+47, a 16 month old youngster and first class prize winner made 18,000gns in
a two way split to father and son team, Drew and Bob Adam, Newhouse of
Glamis, Glamis, Forfar and Bill Bruce, Balmyle, Meigle. Claudius was a
straight replacement for his maternal brother, Sackville Adonis who was
secured for 14,000gns by the same partners and recently suffered an accident
while working in their combined herds of 130 cows. “Adonis’s progeny are
doing well, four lots have sold to average around the 8,000gns mark today,
so we agreed to invest in Claudius; he has size, shape and accompanying good
figures.”
The
Adams
highest entry at 9,000gns was the first class prize winner, Newhouse
Challanger TI +28, SRI +32, to Bob Leggat, New Pitsligo,
Aberdeen.
This Adonis son was out of a homebred cow by the 28,000gns
Perth
champion, Brampton Nacodar.
Heading a string of entries from Neil Massie and his son, Graeme,
Dinnet, Aboyne was Blelack Crusader TI +41, SRI +51, a June 2007 born
Thrunton Socrates son and out of a homebred dam by Blelack Percy. He made
13,000gns to Jan Boomaars,
Woldingham,
Surrey.
Another Socrates from the same breeders, this time the 19 month old
Blelack Colonel TI +36, SRI +37, out of a homebred cow by Balthayock
Lombardo made 12,000gns to Adrian Ivory, Meigle,
Perth.
The final of four, 12,000gns calls was made by Messrs Fraser and
Sons, Glenlivet, Ballindalloch for Derryharney Carryon, a 19 month old
Glenbridge Andrew son and out of a homebred dam going back to Simpsons
Gregg. Bred and exhibited by Harold Stubbs, Lisnaskea,
County
Fermanagh,
Carryon was no stranger to the ring having been awarded intermediate and
overall reserve male championships at the NI Charolais Show, Fintona.
Dundas Condor TI +41, SRI +49, the sole entry from JM Gilchrist,
Crawford, Biggar made 10,000gns to Greig (Farms), Gateside,
Fife.
Condor was by Kelton Trident and out of a homebred dam going back to Roscrea.
Selling with another 10,000gns price tag was Glenericht Champ TI +25,
an August 2007 born entry from WK and P Drysdale, Blairgowrie,
Perth.
Sired by Balnuith Valour, he sold to I Mitchell,
St Andrews,
Fife.
Kevin Thomas was another Welshman who was enjoying his best ever 900
mile round trip to
Perth
in its 19 year history. On Tuesday, he collected his first ever championship
title by heading the senior section with Moelfre Chicago TI +32, SRI +35, a
rising two year old by Major and out of a Ffynnon cow who goes back to
Moelfre Nest, one of the herd’s 90 breeding cows based at Newcastle Emlyn.
Chicago
was bid to 8,500gns by Messrs Renwick, Dundonnell, Ross-shire.
Mr Thomas went one better with the 18 month old Moelfre Capital TI
+27, SRI +33, when he made 9,500gns to Messrs Millar, Tealing,
Dundee.
Capital was a Gretnahouse Vigorous son and out of a homebred cow by Blelack
Ladysman. Later in the day, one of Drew and Bob Adams’ Adonis’s sons caught
Kevin Thomas’s eye; he went on to pay 8,500gns for Newhouse Chicago TI +33,
SRI +37, a 19 month old whose
homebred dam goes back to the 24,000gns Mowbraypark Torpedo.
Hamish Goldie, Ruthwell,
Dumfries
once again turned out a consistent string of quality entries with nine lots
selling to virtually match the sale’s overall average at £6,042. Leading the
line up at 9,500gns was Goldies Concord TI +40, SRI +48, an 18 month old by
the 10,000gns Balthayock Ulex and out of Goldies Veil, full sister to the
34,0000gns Perth supremo, Goldies Uppermost and who goes back to the
16,000gns Perth champion, Maerdy Naser.
Concord
went home with Mountquhanie Farms, Cupar,
Fife.
Twenty four hours earlier, Mr Goldie found himself in reserve junior slot,
the exact same position as 12 months earlier, this time with Goldies
Crackerjack, a 16 month old youngster by Goldies Vicechancellor, a full
brother to Uppermost and out of a homebred dam sired by Derryharney
genetics. Crackerjack made 6,500gns to Messrs Barclay and Sons, Garvock,
Laurencekirk.
The first of four entries to come under the hammer sold for 9,000gns
was Edenhurst Colorado TI +27 from Peter Vasey, Wetheral,
Carlisle
to Nether Balfour, Drumoak, Banchory. This rising two year old by Doonally
New, was out of a homebred dam goes back to Billingley lines.
Next at 9,000gns was Ronnie Baillie’s (Toab, Orkney), Baillieston
Calypso TI +39, a 20 month old Dingle Hofmeister son and out of a Moyness
President sired homebred cow. He returned to Orkney with Messrs Johnston,
Shapinsay.
Yorkshire
breeders, Mike and Margaret Atkinson, Kirkby Malzeard, Ripon were in the
money when they offered their Mowbraypark Conqueror at 9,000gns to Messrs
Leiper, Ponteland,
Newcastle.
Their 17 month old was by the noted Killadeas Jack son sired Mowbraypark
Paramount and out of a dam bred from homebred lines. Another Parmount son,
this time Mowbraypark Councillor TI +25 sold earlier in the day for 8,000gns
to Messrs Wilkie and Sons, Westhill,
Aberdeen.
A first class winner, he was out of a homebred dam by Brampton Chopper.
Nine entries commanded a 8,500gns price tag. First to go was the May
2007 born Inverlochy Colonel TI +30, SRI +37, from father and son team, John
and Raymond Irvine, Tomintoul, Ballindalloch, Banffshire. Sired by the
6,200gns Gower Versace, he was out of Inverlochy Parish, one of the 50 cow
herd’s best bloodlines. The Irvines repeated their previous success in
Perth
by taking home for the second time the reserve senior champion award, this
time with Colonel. The buyer was
Yorkshire

Another 21 month old entry commanding an 8,500gns bid was Corrie

Cognac TI +26, a half brother to Barney; the buyers were Messrs Davie,
Denny,
Stirling.
Carwood Cannon TI +27, SRI +33, commanded an 8,500gns bid for Mr and
Mrs Colin Wight, Biggar from Messrs Thomson, Aberfeldy. This 17 month old
entry was by Kelton Trident and out of a homebred cow by Simpsons Gregg.
The final 8,500gns call came towards the end of four and a half hour
stint, from Messrs Anderson, Fortrose, Ross-shire for the supreme junior
champion, Woodpark Caesar from Will Short,
Omagh,
County
Tyronne.
“I’m absolutely delighted,” he said. “I’ve been coming over to
Perth
for 10 years and this week, my lifelong ambition has almost come true.”
Caesar was Mr Short’s first calf by the 19,000gns Corrie Alan and of a
homebred dam by Doonally New from his 40 cow herd.

Charolais bulls
met a solid trade peaking at 38,000gns in
Perth
on Thursday 23 October, with a new
UK
all beef breeds average of £5,564 established for 108 lots traded. Those
figures represented the highest number of bulls of any breed coming under
the hammer sold during the week’s autumn multi-breed sales.
“Trade
was market led throughout by suckler producers who were aware that Charolais
crosses have not only consistently commanded premiums this season, but an
even bigger price differential over other Continental crosses simply because
of their fast and efficient growth and ability to finish to heavier weights
which no longer suffer a penalty,” commented British Charolais Cattle
Society chief executive, David Benson. “These suckler men were also in no
doubt that investing in Charolais would help them to beat the credit
crunch.”
Sale
leader at 38,000gns was the event’s reserve junior champion, Goldies
Champion, a 17 month old by the 25,000gns Goldies Unbeatable and out of the
10,000gns Killadeas Legend sired Kinclune Pipper. Bred by Hamish Goldie,
Ruthwell, Dumfries, Champion was knocked down sold in a joint bid to
Charolais breeders, Adrian Ivory, Cardean and Bill Bruce, Balmyle, both of
Meigle, Perthshire who between then run 125 pedigree cows. “This bull had
the looks, the shape and the growth, he was very good on his legs, and
equally important, he had good figures all the way through, in particular
calving ease,” said Mr Ivory. Champion was in the breed’s top 10% with a
Terminal Index (TI) of 33, a Self Replacing Index (SRI) of 38 and Calving
Ease Direct 3.6.
For
Hamish Goldie, it was not only his best ever day at Perth since taking over
the family’s Charolais herd 18 months ago, but he was also continuing the
family’s reputed ability to turn out strings of consistent quality bulls;
his five lots to come under the hammer sold to average £12,600.
They
included Goldies Carnival TI 26, SRI 37, a second class prize winner at
9,000gns to Gilbert Crawford, Maghera, Co
Derry.
Another May 2007 born bull, Carnival was by the 15,000gns Carlisle champion
Burrradon Talisman, sire of the record 55,000gns Perth Huntingtower leading
priced Thrunton Voldemort and out of a homebred cow, again by Killadeas
Legend.
At
6,000gns, the 17 month old Goldies Crusader TI33, SRI38, sold to J and
W Kellas,
Dufftown, Keith. Another Unbeatable son, he was out of a Kinclune bred dam,
also by Legend.
Hamish
Goldie invested part of his day’s taking earlier on when he made a joint
25,000gns call with Alasdair Houston, Gretna Green for Thrunton Camelot who
24 hours earlier had collected the overall senior male award for the
Campbell family, Ian and John, their father Colin and Ian’s son, Bruce. This
20 month old was out of a homebred cow going back to Moncur General and by
the
Perth
supremo,
Mowbraypark Orlando who was secured almost 10 years ago at 25,000gns and has
since proved a solid investment having bred three
Perth
champions to gross 55,000gns.
Camelot,
who is in the breed’s top 1% with a TI 37 and SRI 47, and destined to run
between the combined herds of 130 cows, offered the ‘complete package’, said
Mr Houston. “We admired his scale, power, outstanding presence, good breed
character and locomotion combined with top end performance figures.”
The
Campbells
enjoyed one of their best averages in
Perth
in 30 years of making the round trip from Thrunton, Alnwick selling six
entries to level at £11,602. Their next highest at 15,000gns was the first
class prize winner, Thrunton Colorado TI 29, SRI 38, an 18 month old by the
11,000gns Carlisle champion, Solwayfirth Union son and out of a homebred cow
by Maerdy Location. He sold in a split bid to Neil Harvey who manages a herd
of 15 pedigree cows at Duns, and commercial producer, Fred Murray with 100
suckler cows at Wooler. “Colorado’s
a bull with great width and fleshing ability combined with shear volume and
weight gain that led us to make up our minds to secure him,” said Mr Murray.
Another
Solwayfirth Union son, this time the 18 month old Thrunton Consort TI 29,
SRI 37 and out of a Moncur General bred cow made 8,500gns to JI and WN
Stout, Stronsay, Orkney, while Thrunton Carabinier (February 2007), by Union
and out of a Blelack Jaguar sired dam sold for 7,500gns to Kincraigie Farms,
Lumphanan, Banchory.
The
previous day,
Colorado
and Consort had teamed up with Thrunton Cheviot to secure the
Campbells
the supreme champion group of three. Cheviot, an 18 month old Solwayfirth
Union son, made 6,800gns to HG Leslie, Rhynie, Huntly.
Next
at 12,000gns was the intermediate and overall supreme champion, Swalesmoor
Cupid, an 18 month old from Danny Sawrij, Eaglesfield, Lockerbie. “Cupid is
a tremendous crossing bull, he’s clean, solid all the way through, he
handled the best over the hind quarters and he is fine boned,” commented
judge, Colin Wight after the four hour judging stint when he found the
winning entry was complemented by top performance data being within the
breed’s top 1% with a TI 38 and SRI 45. The following day, Mr Wight backed
his judgment when he secured Cupid on behalf of his family, brother Jack and
father John to run with their two pedigree herds Midlock and Carwood
totaling 70 cows and a further 330 sucklers.
Sired
by the 34,000gns
Perth
supremo,
Goldies Uppermost, and out Blelack Una who goes back to Bassingbourn lines,
Cupid was no stranger to the ring having already secured both junior breed
and junior interbreed titles at the Royal Highland Show. For Swalesmoor’s
Iain Campbell, Cupid was the best he’d turned out since being appointed as
the unit’s farm manager just five years ago and building up the herd to 40
cows with a handful of selected families. “I’ve been involved with Charolais
virtually all my life, and winning
Perth
has just got to be the pinnacle achievement,” he said.
Minutes
before, Cupid’s full brother, the 18 month old Swalesmoor Cavalier TI 32,
SRI 38 commanded a bid of 7,500gns from HR Dalrymple, Ballantrae,
Irvine.
Swalesmoor achieved a second 7,500gns price tag, this time for the April
2007 born Swalesmoor Cannon from Clark Farms, Carluke, Lanark. A
Dinglehofmeister son and out of a Maerdy Neptune sired Logie cow bred by
Iain Campbell, he was within the breed’s top 1% with a TI 41 and SRI 46 and
was another familiar bull in the ring having claimed the M&S Elite Beef
Breeder championship at the Royal Highland Show.
Two
entries went to 10,000gns. First to go was the Caithness Campbell, a 19
month old Inverlochy Resolve son and out of Cargriff Salsa purchased in a
private deal as a heifer.
Campbell
was bred by Daniel and Margaret Campbell, who run a 45 cow herd at Occumster,
Lybster and achieved their first five figure bull in more than 25 years of
breeding pedigree Charolais. He was knocked down sold to J Innes and Sons,
Huntley,
Aberdeen.
The
day’s second 10,000gns call was made for Bill Bruce’s (Meigle,
Perth)
highest entry, Balmyle Churchill TI 35, SRI 41, a 17 month old by Balmyle
Statesman, a Dingle Hofmeister son and out of a homebred cow. A first class
prizewinner, he sold jointly to father and son team, Drew and Bob Adam
Newhouse of Glamis, Glamis, Forfar and Major David Walter, Balthayock,
Perth.
The
leading entry from
Northern
Ireland
at 9,000gns was Sandelford Curtis TI 24, SRI 31, a 19 month old from George
Henderson, who runs a 10 cow herd at Bushmills,
County
Antrim.
Sired by Goldies Usher and out of a homebred cow by Drumeer Major, he was
secured by George Wordie, to run with his 230 cow suckler herd based at
Glass, Huntley. The previous day Curtis carried off the reserve senior
championship award, adding to his previous accolades – the Royal Ulster
junior interbreed and reserve breed championships earlier this season on his
only other trip out. Curtis’s stablemate, Sandelford Chaplin, another same
way bred 19 month old made 5,200gns to R Sabiston, Finstown, Orkney.
At
9,000gns, John Jeffrey, Kersknowe, Kelso offered his second class prize
winner, Kersknowe Chief to WJ Jack and Sons, Killearnan, Muir of Ord. This
18 month old Burradon Tallisman son was out of a homebred cow going back to
Killadeas Jack. The same breeder offered at 7,500gns Kersknowe Cadet,
another 18 month old, this time by Moelfre Viscount and out of a homebred
dam. The buyer was IHG Warden, Hawick.
Mr
Jeffrey invested some of takings by bidding 8,500gns for Balnuith Carvalho
TI 36, SRI 42. This 19 month old by Balmyle Victor and out of a Balthayock
Lombardo sired homebred dam was the sole entry from Neil and Sandra Caul,
Liff,
Dundee.
The
day’s third and final 9,000gns call was commanded by Blelack Canasta TI 28,
SRI
33, the leading entry from father and son team, Neil and Graeme Massie,
Blelack, Aboyne. This 18 month old was by the 26,000gns Balbithan Vespasian
and out of a homebred dam by Blelack Roger. He was knocked down sold to
Frank Walton, Thropton, Morpeth. Another Vespasian son, this time Blelack
Commando TI 32,
SRI
37, made 7,000gns to
AH Fisher, Portpatrick, Stranraer and WD Adams and Son, Wigtown.
The
much admired junior champion, Killadeas Charade attracted 8,500gns, one of
the day’s final calls, and made jointly by Kincraigie Farms, Lumphanan,
Banchory and Nether Balfour Farms, Drumoak, Banchory. This 15 moth old
youngster bred and exhibited by father and son team, Stuart and David
Bothwell was by Dunlon Ulick and out of Killadeas Novelty, a member of their
35 cow herd who is full sister to Killadeas Original, Jack and Legend.
Charade was among the Bothwell’s highly successful show team at Fintona
where has was placed reserve intermediate champion.
Harestone
Count, a June 2007 born first class prize winner by Maerdy Impeccable from
Neil Barclay, Crathes, Banchory made 8,000gns to the Barker family,
Nuthampstead, Royston.
Tedd
Commander commanded the day’s second 8,000gns bid from JJ Gordon, Wellheads,
Huntly. A 16 month old whose homebred dam went back to Doonally New,
Commander was the sole entry from S Hunter, Irvinestown,
County
Fermanagh.
Finally
bid to 8,000gns was Ann
Macpherson’s (Dalcross, Inverness), Blackford Chieftain TI 26, SRI 32,
another 18 month old Talisman son sold in a joint split between DS Davies,
Gorebridge, Midlothian and Messrs Ker, Melrose, St Boswells. The same
breeder also sold at 7,500gns Blackford Clansman, an 18 month old first
class prize winner by Burradon Talisman and out of a Thrunton bred cow by
Haymount Jetstream. He went home with Hamish MacKellar to run with his 90
cow suckler herd at Dallas, Forres.
A
total of eight lots came under the hammer sold for 7,500gns. First in the
ring was Esgob Campbell TI 28, SRI 35, a 17 month old by the 18,000gns
Thrunton Virginian, a Burradon Talisman son and out of a homebred dam from
Gareth Jones’ 30 cow herd based at
Cwmtirmynach, Bala. The buyer was Donald Finlay and Sons,
Stirling.
Campbell who was placed second in his class 24 hours earlier, was another
entry to have already stolen the limelight; at the Royal Welsh Show he
secured the junior male, male and overall breed champion, the junior
interbreed championship and he teamed up with his paternal sister to stand
reserve in the pairs championship.
Lislea Con, an 18 month old by Doonally New, bred by Pat Murtagh, and
exhibited by G Cutler, Enniskillen,
County
Fermanagh
commanded a 7,500gns bid from Michael Durno to run with his 160 cow suckler
herd at Glenlivet, Ballindalloch.
Alasdair Houston’s (Gretna
Green)
highest entry at 7,500gns was Gretnahouse Calypso TI 27, SRI 36, an 18 month
old by Burradon Talisman and out of a homebred cow by Oldstone Egbert. The
buyers were A and H Sim and Son, Monymusk, Inverurie.
Elrick Cassius TI
29, SR 34, an 18 month old Blelack Roger son and out of a Blelack cow by
Thrunton Damien made 7,000gns to J Morris and Son, Easington, Aylesbury. A
second class prize winner, Cassius was bred and exhibited by Michael Massie,
Auchnagatt, Ellon.
The overall reserve supreme and reserve intermediate champion,
Hindstones Cruiser, described by the judge, Colin Wight as being ‘correct
all the way through’, attracted a 7,000gns price tag from CG Grieg (Farms)
Gateside, Fife. Bred and exhibited by Willie Whyte who runs a 16 cow herd at
New Aberdour, Fraserburgh, this 18 month old was by the 8,500gns
Carlisle
champion, Trefaldwyn Valiant and out of a homebred cow by the 4,600gns
Padeswood Mercedes.
A bid of 7,000gns secured Woodpark Cain for Fawdon Farms, Powburn,
Alnwick. Bred and exhibited by Will Short, Omagh,
County
Tyronne,
Cain was by Rumsden Tsar, out of a Skidoo sired homebred cow, and had been
placed first in his class.
Mike and Margaret
Atkinson, Kirkby Malzeard, Ripon, offered their best, Mowbraypark Cavalier
TI 29, SRI 38, at 7,000gns to JD Lindsay, Kirriemuir, Angus. A Burradon
Talisman son and out of a homebred cow by the couple’s renowned Mowbraypark
Paramount, Cavalier had already enjoyed success in the show ring; he was a
member of the champion interbreed junior beef group at the Great Yorkshire.
This week he stood second in his class.
The female trade on Wednesday 22 October was led at 12,000gns by
Dunesk Unesta, one of a draft from Jimmy and Margaret McMillan, Farnell,
Brechin to J Price,
Staunton-on-Wye,
Hereford.
This five year old Oldstone Egbert daughter who is
one of
Scotland’s
most highly celebrated show cows, was offered in calf to Burradon Talisman.
Unesta’s January born bull, Dunest Dubai by Brampton Albert sold for
2,200gns to A Taylor, Brindsley,
Nottingham.
A
cow and calf pair from the same vendors made 4,600gns to WR and M Mill,
Westfield,
Thurso. Dunesk Octavia, was a 10 year old Seawell Icon daughter while her
yearling heifer, Dunesk Cleo was by Shraden Talisman.
Next at
3,800gns was the female champion, Derryharney Bethany, a two year old heifer
by Derryharney Usher and out of a homebred cow by Oldstone Egbert. Bred and
exhibited by Harold Stubbs, Lisnaskea,
County
Fermanagh,
she sold to John Rix, Nayland,
Colchester.

5 May 2008 | Charolais head Perth multi-breed sale at 5,000gns

The Champion, Bonnykelly Bertie sold for 4,000gns.

Balthayock Bedlam, the Reserve Championat 3,800gns
Charolais led Perth’s spring multi-breed show and sale with a top call of 5,000gns on Monday 7 May. Sale leader was Thrunton Bluechip, a 21 month old from the Campbell family, Ian, John and their father, Colin, Thrunton, Alnwick. The buyer was KM Fraser, Newburgh. Fife. Bluechip was out of a homebred dam by Blelack Jaguar and just one of a string of five entries from the same vendors by Burradon Talisman, sire of the 55,000gns Perth intermediate champion, Thrunton Voldemort.

Thrunton Bluechip, the day's leader at 5,000gns
The next Talisman son at 3,500gns was Thrunton Bastian, another 21 month old, this time out of a homebred dam going back to Moncur General. Bastian was knocked down sold to JH Paton, Kinross. The two year old Thrunton Blaze, another same way bred entry commanded a 3,200gns bid from G Limond, Maybole, Ayr; Thrunton Benefactor, a 19 month old out of a cow going back to Maerdy Location made 2,500gns to Woodmill Farms, Auchermuchty; while the Campbell’s final entry by Talisman, the August 2006 born Thrunton Bubble sold for 2,400gns to RG Barbour and Sons, Jedburgh.
The day’s championship was awarded to Bonnykelly Bertie, a 19 month old from Bob Leggat and his son, Graeme, New Pitsligo, Fraserburgh. A Ravensworth Osbert son and out of homebred dam going back to Fleets lines, he attracted a 4,000gns call from RM Mackay and Sons, Dunnet, Thurso.
Standing below Bertie in the final line up was Balthayock Bedlam, who later was knocked down sold for 3,800gns. Bred and exhibited by Major David Walter, Balthayock, Perth, Bedlam went home with JW Anderson, Burnton, Laurencekirk.
Following closely behind at 3,600gns was Ross Atom, a two year old by the 11,000gns Farley Copse Talbot from Ronnie Mackie, Crieff. Atom was secured by A McLaren, Kinross.
Two lots shared a 2,900gns bid. First to go was the two year old Mornity Boxer, a Balnuith Universe son from Mornity Farms, Alyth, Blairgowrie to AR Anderson, Dalkeith. The second 2,900gns call was made late in the day for Blelack Banjoe, an 18 month old by the 25,000gns Perth champion Thrunton Scorates. Bred and exhibited by father and son team, Neil and Graeme Massie, Dinnet, Aboyne, the buyer was DA MacGillivray, Kirkhill, Inverness.

PERTH FEBRUARY BULL SALES 2008 | Perth Charolais peak at 14,000gns
55 entries at 5,000gns or more; 166 lots traded: average £4,408
Charolais bulls commanded a solid trade from the commercial sector at the breed society’s official spring sale in Perth, on Wednesday 20 February. Bidding peaked at 14,000gns, 55 entries sold for 5,000gns or more and166 lots traded to average £4,408. That figure represented the highest number of bulls of any breed coming under the hammer sold during the centre’s spring multi-breed sales and a 70% clearance.
“Trade was underpinned by suckler producers who were seeking in particular bulls that will leave bigger, growthy calves and ultimately a higher return,” commented the British Charolais Cattle Society’s David Benson. “It was apparent that buyers were now using BCCS’s new performance indices to identify bulls; the Terminal Index (TI) for out and out cross breeding programmes, and both pedigree and commercial men were referring to the Self Replacing Index (SRI) for selecting bulls to leave replacement females.”

Dartonhall Brandy.
The day’s leader at 14,000gns was Dartonhall Brandy, a 20 month old from Sean McGovern, Clogher, County Tyronne who purchased him in Dungannon last year for 7,500gns. Brandy was sired by Mr McGovern’s Royal Highland Show champion, Ashleigh Victor, an Irish bred bull who was initially purchased for €11,000 at Tullamore by Brandy’s breeder, John Erskine, Killylea, County Armargh. Brandy who was a second class prize winner and also a qualifier for Beef Quality Initiative funding, was knocked down sold to Gregory Donnelly, to join his 50 cow herd based at Ardmore, County Derry. For Sean McGovern who was accompanied by his daughters, Eimear and Clodagh, the deal added to a handful of five figure leading bulls he has sold through Perth since starting to trade through the centre in the last six years.

Woodpark Bishop
Close behind at 13,000gns was another Irish bred bull, this time the class winner, Woodpark Bishop from Will Short, Omagh, County Tyronne who was enjoying his best ever price at Perth in 10 years of traveling over the water. An 18 month old by the privately purchased Rumsden Tsar, Bishop was out of Woodpark Rene, a member of the 30 cow herd and bred from one of its leading cow families. The buyer was David Stobart who admired Bishop’s ‘extreme muscle, shape and soundness of leg’. He went to join the 60 cow Stabarts pedigree herd based at Cracrop, Brampton.
Later in the day Mr Short offered his 15 month old Doonally New son, Woodpark Barnaby who was in the breed’s top 25% with a Terminal Index (TI) of 23, at 6,000gns to JM Nisbet, Mauchline, Ayr.

Newhouse Benson
Next at 12,000gns was the 19 month old Newhouse Benson TI 24, from father and son team, Drew and Bob Adam, Newhouse of Glamis, Glamis, Angus. Sired by the 24,000gns Perth reserve senior champion, Mowbraypark Torpedo and out of a homebred dam from their 40 cow herd by the 30,000gns Silver Joss, Benson was knocked down sold to Mr and Mrs Andrew White’s Balbithan herd, Worth Matravers, Swanage. “This bull was fleshy, he had style, equally important Torpedo is breeding very consistent progeny,” commented herd manager, Jane Haw.

Glamis Benefactor
That consistency was reflected in Glamis Benefactor TI 27, who minutes later commanded a 10,000gns bid from G Davie, Denny, Stirling. Benefactor who was offered by Andrew and James Adam, the fourth generation of Charolais breeders at Newhouse of Glamis, was a July 2006 born Torpedo son, out of a homebred cow going back to Balnuith Ringleader and 24 hours earlier had been placed first in his class.
A third Torpedo son, this time the 17 month old Newhouse Buckaneer and out of a homebred cow by the 27,000gns Brampton Nacodar made 7,000gns to MJ Clarke, Alyth, Blairgowrie.

Goldies Bulldozer
Goldies Bulldozer, a 16 month old who is in the breed’s top 1% with a TI score of 40 and backed by the highest set of recorded performance data in the catalogue, made 11,000gns to Bob Leggat, and his son, Graeme New Pitsligo, Fraserburgh. Bred by Hamish Goldie, Ruthwell, Dumfries, he was by the 34,000gns Perth champion, Goldies Uppermost and out of one of the restocked herd’s foundation cows combining a blend of Dingle Hofmeister and Moelfre genetics.

Goldies Bruno

Goldies Bandit
The next best from the same breeder at 7,000gns from WJ Fraser and Sons, Glenlivet, Ballindalloch was Goldies Bruno, a 19 month old by the 10,000gns Balthayock Ulex and out of a Kinclune bred cow. Minutes before, Goldies Bandit TI25, another same way bred 19 month old commanded a 6,000gns bid from Messrs McIntosh, Dunragit, Stranraer. Just 24 hours earlier Bandit had been placed reserve intermediate and overall reserve champion by judge, Iain Millar, Port of Menteith, Stirling who described him as ‘big and powerful and full of flesh’. He said however there was very little between Bandit and the intermediate champion, Thrunton Bonjovi, who after a five hour judging stint Mr Millar awarded the supreme championship title. “Bonjovi had all the attributes of a modern Charolais, he had power, presence and length and he had good locomotion,” he explained.

Thrunton Bonjovi
Bred by the Campbells, Ian and John and their father, Colin, of Thrunton, Alnwick, the 20 month old Thrunton Bonjovi TI 21, secured for the family its fifth Perth supreme champion title. “Perth is the most difficult award to win and we’re delighted to receive it again,” said Ian. Bonjovi was one of the first six sons to be offered in Perth by the 11,000gns Carlisle reserve senior champion, Solwayfirth Union, who was chosen to join Thrunton for his shape and potential to deliver easy calved progeny. His dam was homebred from the family’s 120 cow herd and goes back to the 11,000gns Haymount Jetstream.
Bonjovi, who was a BQI qualifier, was knocked down sold for 10,000gns to Harold Stubbs to run with his 20 cow herd based at Lisbellaw, County Fermanagh. “I first saw this bull as a calf while on a herd visit to Thrunton and he stood out from the rest. More than a year on and he continued to impress me when I saw him in the ring this week. He’s a big long stretchy bull with plenty of muscling, and I was determined to take him home,” said Mr Stubbs who is usually to be inside the Perth ring having sold three, five figure bulls in the last five years.

Thrunton Bullet
The Campbells sold a string of 10 bulls to average £4,683, with their next best, Thrunton Bullet, a second class winner, at 9,000gns. This 17 month old who is in the breed’s top 1% with a TI value of 38, was by the 15,000gns Burradon Talisman who sired the 55,000gns centre record price intermediate Perth champion, Thrunton Voldemort, and he was out of a homebred cow by Jetstream. Bullet went home with A Provan, Douglas, Lanark.

Baillieston Bobby
Two more lots were bid to 9,000gns a piece. First to go was Baillieston Bobby, an April 2006 born from Ronnie, Toab, Deerness, Orkney to Colin Wight, Carwood, Biggar, Lanark. Sired by the 17,000gns Mowbraypark Umpire, he was out of a homebred cow going back to Fleets Rascal.

Fury Breeze
The day’s third 9,000gns call went to Fury Breeze TI25, a second class prize winner and sole entry from part time builder, Pat Hackett who runs a 10 cow pedigree herd at Clogher, County Tyrone. This 17 month old by Domino was out of an Oldstone Egbert sired homebred dam who goes back to one of the herd’s foundation cows by Brampton Fourstar.
