Charolais sold to a new top centre record of 5,600gns and average of £3,431
in Holsworthy on Wednesday 298 April at the breed society’s south west
official spring fixture.
Sale
leader was Broadbury Diesel, a two year old bred by R and F Long and offered
by R S
and S M Hopper, Bude. Sired by Burradon Talisman and out of a Riddlecombe
bred cow, he sold to C P Heard and Son, Okehampton.
Next at
4,700gns was the day’s reserve champion, Balbithan Everclear, a 14 month old
by the 10,000gns Inverlochy Topsire and out a homebred cow by Seawell
Offshore. Bred by Mr and Mrs Andrew White, Worth Matravers and exhibited by
herd manager, Jane Haw, Everclear was in the breed’s top 10% with a Self
Replacing Index of + 37. The buyer was Phillip Heard, Okehampton.
At 3,650gns the same
vendors offered Balbithan Duke, a 16 month old by Mortimers Vanquish son and
out of a homebred cow going back to Corrie Highlander. Duke was secured by
BK Heale, Holsworthy.
Philip Heard also invested 4,000gns in the supreme championship,
Downtown Duncan
(pictured above), a Westcarse Beef son and out of a homebred dam by Waverlea
Ruler. Bred and exhibited by Brian and Diane Lavis, Okehampton, this 21
month old was no stranger to the ring having secured several tickets on the
2009 local and county show circuit.
A
bid of 3,500gns secured Gaer Director for North Wyke Farms, Okehampton. Bred
by TE Jones, Welshpool and offered by ML Impey,
Ludlow,
this 20 month old was by Lowerffrydd Benhur and out of a cow going back to
Finnwest lines.
Two
lots shared a 2,900gns price tag. First to go was the two year old Pengwedna
Dodo a Hendy Alcapone son from AE and A Pascoe, Helston to AW Gale, Newton
Abbott. The second 2,900gns bid was made by TJ Jakins,
Plymouth
for Bailea Dashing, a 21 month old Bailea Ulysse son from Brian Jones,
Brecon.
The
female sector was led at 2,000gns by a cow and calf pair from John Williams,
Chumleigh. Riddlecombe Rita was bred from homebred lines and her eight month
old bull, Riddlecombe Englebert was
by Riddlecombe Maurice. The buyer was MJ Bulled,
South Molton.

Sale Date 24 June, 11am | Little Bovey Charolais under the hammer
Little Bovey, one of the south west’s leading Charolais herds owned by Henry and Emma Vooght, is staging a production sale under the British Charolais Cattle Society’s auspices on 24 June ,11am at Little Bovey Farm, Bovey Tracey, Newton Abbott.
A catalogued entry of 50 females and two bulls and will come under the hammer including 21 cows in calf or with calf at foot, together with two year olds and yearling heifers. Any buyers located outwith the bluetongue Protection Zone will have their cattle retained on farm and vaccinated pre movement.
The Little Bovey herd, which underwent rapid expansion in 2003 with the purchase of the renowned Bassingbourn herd, has chalked up numerous successes on the south west show circuit and beyond. The majority of young stock for sale are by one of the herd’s three current sires, the 15,000gns Balthayock Tomahawk, the 11,000gns Ballindalloch Aero and Maerdy Ultramagic, all of which are in the breed’s top 10% and are bringing a boost to the herd’s genetic potential. One of the stars in the catalogue is Little Bovey Tee, the Royal Cornwall reserve interbreed champion, offered with her Tomahawk sired heifer calf at foot and in calf to Aero.
“Little Bovey comprises a mix of established and modern genetics coming from some of the herdbook’s strongest bloodlines,” comments BCCS chairman, Steven Nesbitt. “This fixture provides both pedigree breeders and commercial producers with the opportunity to buy some new genetics with potential outstanding performance.”

2 April 2008 | Holsworthy Charolais bid to 2,550gns
Charolais bulls met a keen demand from commercial producers selling to a top of 2,550gns in Holsworthy on Wednesday 2 April at the South West Charolais Club’s official spring show and sale.
Leading the trade at 2,550gns was the day’s champion, Pengwedna Buster, a 21 month old Maerdy USA son and out of a Maerdy bred cow going back to Maerdy Grimaldi. Bred and exhibited by Mrs and Miss AE Pascoe, Helston, Cornwall he was knocked down sold to KC and JC Heard, Okehampton, Devon.
Next at 2,050gns was the two year old Littlebovey Bart from Henry and Emma Vooght, Bovey Tracey, Devon to C Morrish, Barnstaple, Devon. A Balthayock Tomahawk son, he was out of a Bassingbourn bred cow bred from Glenleary lines.
A bid of 2,000gns secured Lovistone Baron for AS Tamblyn and Son, Liskeard, Cornwall. This two year old bred by BR Nancekivell, Okehampton, Devon was by Penhole Samaritan and out of a Clayknight bred cow.
Two lots commanded a bid of 1,850gns. First in the ring was Saxon Betton, a two year old by MMB Apollon from Devon based breeders, MF, SA and CM Conley, Moretonhampstead, Devon to LM Paull, Fowey, Cornwall.
The second 1,850gns bid was made by AS Tamblyn and Son, Liskeard, Cornwall for Balbithan Brazil, a rising two year old by the 10,000gns Inverlochy Topsire from Mr and Mrs Andrew White, Worth Matravers, Dorset.
Females sold to a top of 1,600gns for an entry from RS and SM Hopper, Bude to Messrs Power, Okehampton. Bassingbourn Tullia was a five year old Maerdy Osborne daughter offered with her 10 month old heifer, Penfound Celia, by Riddlecombe Upstart.
