Commercial suckler producers will have the
opportunity to select from an entry of 232 pedigree Charolais bulls, at the
breed’s official spring show and sale in
The sale will also feature the adult portion
of Sandy Innes’ Moyness herd comprising 10 cows with calves at foot. These
females represent some of the best cow families at Moyness with Maerdy
Impeccable, Vaubon, Moyness Saltire and Polonium all featuring in the
pedigrees. The majority of these have calves at foot, and are served again
to Edenhurst Cognac who is within the breed’s top 5% on both TI and Self
Replacing Index.
The previous day, Friday, the bulls will be
judged by Scottish Charolais breeder, Bob Adam of the renowned Newhouse
herd, Glamis, Angus who says he will be looking for bulls with size, shape
and style. “They’re the type of animals we focus on breeding within our 40
cow herd, and they’re the type that are in demand by pedigree and commercial
producers alike,” he says.
That has proved to be the case for the Adam
family, father, Drew and Bob’s wife, Kay who are frequently found among the
top Perth Charolais averages, collecting strings of tickets and taking home
the silverware. They have sold to 22,000gns twice, including in February for
the overall supreme and intermediate champion, Newhouse Dingdong.
“Charolais was introduced to Newhouse 37
years ago by my father, and since then it has faced competition from 11
different cattle breeds, however from an early stage he was confident that
it had a major role to play as a business venture,” explains Bob who will be
making his debut judging at a major official society fixture. “That real
confidence continues. We believe that the future for Charolais is very
bright simply because commercial men are finding that Charolais cross cattle
can be finished to 400kg carcase weight and without too much fat cover, more
quickly and efficiently than any other crosses. Charolais crosses are also
increasingly favoured for their quiet temperament. Charolais is the
indisputable beef terminal sire for the future.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A change in farming policy has prompted the sale
of the adult portion of the noted
Moyness Charolais Herd, due to come under the hammer later this month at
The entry of nine cows (mostly with calf at foot)
offers new and existing breeders a unique opportunity to purchase females
with highly sought after pedigrees.
The Moyness prefix was first registered by Sandy
Innes in 1973 at which time he purchased “Oaktree Hetty” from the Harris
family at Gainsborough. This proved to be a sound investment as her
daughters and their progeny formed the basis of what has become one of the
best known Charolais herds in the
Over the years Moyness have made their presence
felt at Shows and Sales, securing no less than
20 Junior Championships, 3 Overall and 6 Reserve Overall titles at
the world famous Perth Bull Sales.
One of the most positive acquisitions at Moyness
was the mighty Maerdy Impeccable
who stamped his authority right across the herd, and remains widely used by
breeders throughout the country with almost
800 progeny registered in the
British Herdbook. His sons attracted consistent high prices at auction
reaching heights of 26,000
guineas for Moyness Maharajah
paid by Genus.
Earlier the same year Maharajah had teamed up two
paternal brothers to capture three first placings at the Royal Show and the
Group of Three (Mars and Magnum). Moyness Mars also scooped the Junior
Championships at this outing.
Private sales have been consistent for almost
four decades with a top home sale price of
£30,000 recorded for
Moyness Vivaciuos who was snapped
up by the Balnuith and Claymore herds. This was an outstanding son of
Moyness Saltire who was sired by the imported Polonium.
