Charolais command solid commercial trade in
Thainstone
Record 16,500gns top,
record £7,460 average, 82% clearance
Charolais led with an exceptional trade at the Royal Northern
Spring Show, at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ Thainstone Centre, Inverurie on
Wednesday 29 February where two all-breed centre records were established -
bulls sold to a new top of 16,500gns and 18 lots averaged £7,460.
“Trade was on fire throughout the 60 minute sale
reflecting the unsurprising resurgence in demand for Charolais bulls,”
commented the society’s David Benson. “This demand was fuelled by commercial
men confident that Charolais will leave fast growing calves with excellent
conformation which has led them to command a 10% premium in the store ring,
according to AHDB data.”

Sale Leader Kinclune Frater at 16,500gns
Sale
leader at 16,500gns was Kinclune
Frater, a 20 month old by the 20,000gns Perth supremo, Thrunton
Crownprince and out of a homebred dam from his 50 cow pedigree herd by
Derryharney Peter. Bred and exhibited by John Wilson, Glenkindie, Alford he
was knocked down sold to Philip Simmers, Backmuir Trading, Keith. Mr Simmers
secured another two Crownprice sons - he paid 13,000gns for the 20 month old
Kinclune Freeman and 7,200gns for the first entry in the catalogue,
Kinclune Forman, a rising two
year old, out of a homebred dam by the 10,000gns Maerdy Rumbull.

Kinclune Freeman at 13,000gns
John Wilson enjoyed his best ever day in
Inverurie in 35 years of exhibiting at the event with a total of nine bulls
selling to average £8,633. His next best at 9,500gns was
Kinclune Fantastic, a 19 month
old by the 7,000gns Maerdy Boom and out of a homebred cow going back to
Killadeas Legend. The buyer was near neighbour, George Wilson and Son,
Glenkindie, Alford.
At 7,000gns,
Kinclune Foden changed hands to AR Strathdee, Deskford, Buckie. A 21
month old Crownprince son, he was out of a homebred cow by Killadeas Legend.
Following on at 6,800gns to KH and K Marshall, Rickarton, Stonehaven was
Kinclune Franco, a 21 month old Crownprince son out of a homebred
dam by the 14,000gns Caylers Solomon. Finally at 5,000gns
Kinclune Filbert, a 19 month old Maerdy Boom son was secured by AC
Smith, Farr, Inverness.

Elgin Findlay at 14,000gns
The day’s second highest call of 14,000gns went
to Elgin Findlay TI +42, SRI +34,
a 20 month old from the Milne family, Llanbryde, Elgin. An Elgin Davinci son
and out of a Gower Versace sired dam, the buyer was J Baxter, Gamrie, Banff.
Next at 7,200gns was the interbreed supreme champion,
Harestone Ferrari TI +27, +SRI
26, a 22 month old by Glencoe Conrad and out of a homebred cow by Maerdy
Impeccable. Bred and exhibited by father and son team, Neil and Stuart
Barclay, Crathes, Banchory, he was knocked down sold to C Smith, Lumphanan,
Banchory. Harestone Foreman TI
+51, SRI +43, another 22 month old by Harestone Tyrol from the same breeders
made 5,800gns to T and I Alexander, Lyth, Wick.
Elrick
Falcon TI +40, SRI +38, a 22 month old from Mike Massie, Auchnagatt,
Ellon made 7,000gns to A Brown, Midmar, Inverurie. Sired by the 12,000gns
Coolnaslee Adversary, he was out of a homebred dam going back to Blelack
Roger. Elrick Fabian TI +34, SRI +32, another same age and same way bred
entry from Mike Massie commanded a 6,800gns bid from Graeme Leggat, New
Pitsligo, Fraserburgh.
Blelack
Felix TI +41, SRI 25, a rising two year old entry from Neil and Graeme
Massie, Dinnett, Aboyne made 5,000gns to A and J Wilson, Culsalmond, Insch.
Sired by the 12,000gns Maerdy Dublin, he was out of a homebred dam by the
25,000gns Perth supremo, Thrunton Socrates.

Charolais
set 13,000gns Thainstone Centre record
Charolais
bulls were in huge demand selling to 13,000gns and establishing a new
Thainstone Centre record on Wednesday 2 March at the multi-breed spring show
and sale
staged in conjunction with the Royal Northern Spring Show. Charolais went on
to dominate the event by taking the majority of leading prices, tickets and
the top £4,657
average.
“Charolais
bulls met an insatiable demand from commercial producers throughout the
sale. The trade was on fire,” commented the breed
society’s David Benson. “These commercial men are enjoying premiums for
their Charolais cross calves of up to £100 over other same age crosses, a
trend led by finishers facing escalating feed bills and confident that
Charolais crosses will finish the fastest and most efficiently.”

The Overall Champion Inverlochy Edition
The
13,000gns sale leader was the Charolais and day’s overall champion, Inverlochy Edition
TI+29,
SRI
+36, a 21 month old by the 4,000gns Lochend Apache and out of a homebred dam
by Allanfauld Onenreve. Bred and exhibited by father and son team, John and
Raymond Irvine, Tomintoul, Ballindalloch, he sold to
commercial producer, Willie Forbes,
Dalrachie, Ballindalloch.

Next
at 8,500gns was the 22 month old

Alford. Sired by the 7,000gns Maerdy Boom, he was out of a homebred dam by
the 10,000gns Killadeas Legend.

Huntley. This 21 month old Boom son was out of a homebred cow by Derryharney

Balnacraig Egbert at 7,500gns
At
7,500gns Balnacraig Egbert was
knocked down sold to Backmuir Trading, Keith. This two year old bred and
exhibited by D Cruickshank, Torphins, Banchory was an Airdlin Branson son
and out of a home bred dam going back to Allanfauld Onenreve. Earlier in the
day he had been awarded the reserve breed championship.

Harestone Edmonton at 6,000gns

entries shared a 6,000gns bid. First was

later, the Barclays offered the 22 month old

sired homebred cow for 5,000gns to D Stephen and Son, Forglen, Turriff.

exhibited by C M McCombie, Rothiemay, Huntley, Elk was a 20 month old by
Trefaldwyn Usk, out of a Blelack bred cow going back to Maerdy Oxo.

Charolais set
new benchmark at Thainstone spring fixture

Kinclune Director, the day's Champion and leader at 10,000gns

Reserve Champion, Blelack Dazzler at 9,000gns
Charolais established a new benchmark at Thainstone on Wednesday 24 February
where the centre’s annual spring show and sale records were broken with a
top call of 10,000gns and second highest price of 9,000gns. Both bids
eclipsed the previous 8, 600gns centre record for Kinclune Commando achieved
exactly 12 months earlier.
Judge, Mathew Milne, of Llanbryde,
Elgin,
found his champion in Kinclune Director who went on to command the day’s
leading 10,000gns bid. This 20 month old was by the 11,000gns Moyness
Vichy
and out of a homebred dam going back to Derryharney Peter from Jock Wilson,
Glenkindie, Alford. He was knocked down sold to G McBain, Cabrach, Huntley.
Jock
Wilson
offered four more Moyness Vichy sons. First at 8,000gns was the 21 month old
Kinclune Diamond whose homebred dam was by the 14,000gns Caylers Solomon. He
sold to B Mackie and Son, Rhynie, Huntley.
Two
Vichy
sons attracted a 3,400gns price tag. First was the 21 month old Kinclune
Deamon and out of a homebred cow by Derryharney Peter to W and L Muir,
Harray, Orkney. The second 3,400gns bid, this time from P Ferries, Lumphanan,
Banchory, was made for Kilclune Deputy, a 19 month old whose dam went back
to Killadeas Legend.
The final
Vichy
son from Jock Wilson at 3,200gns was Kinclune Danny, a 21 month old out of a
Killadeas Legend sired homebred cow. The buyer was GW Arnott, Tyrie,
Fraserburgh.
The day’s second highest call at 9,000gns went to the reserve
champion, Blelack Dazzler from father and son team, Neil and Graeme Massie,
Dinnet, Aboyne to John Gordon, Wellheads, Huntley. This rising two year old
was by Solitude Asp and out of a Blelack bred dam.
Blelack Drake, a 23 month old from the Massies secured a 4,000gns bid
from J Farquhar, Logie Coldstone, Aboyne.
Drake was by the 12,000gns Coolnaslee Adversary and out of a homebred
cow by the 15,000gns Maerdy Oxo.
Highest entry at 5,500gns from Neil Barclay, Crathes, Banchory was
Harestone Detonator to G and J Rattray, Craigievar, Alford. This 21 month
old was by Harestone Rotobaga and out of a Maerdy Neptune sired homebred
dam.
Next at 4,500gns was Tullo Dynamite, a two year old from GM Barclay
and Sons, Garvock, Laurencekirk to J Young, Corse, Alford. A Balmyle
Addition son, Dynamite was out of a Corrie bred dam by Gretnahouse Noel.
A bid of 3,600gns secured Elgin Dirk for J and L Shepherd, Echt,
Westhill. Bred and exhibited by the Milne family, Llanbryde,
Elgin,
Dirk was a 21 month old by Gower Versace and out of a Foxacre bred cow by
Balmyle Tangle.
T Smith and Son, Whitehouse, Alford paid 3,400gns for Elick Diego
from Michael Massie, Auchnagatt, Ellon. This rising two year old was by
Coolnaslee Adversary and out of a Blelack sired homebred cow.
