CARLISLE Forthcoming Sales
Cheshire cattleman to judge Carlisle Charolais Cheshire cattleman, Charlie Boden will be judging a line up of 217 Charolais bulls and 19 females at the breed society’s late spring fixture to be staged at Carlisle on Friday 9 May, prior to them coming under the hammer the following day, Saturday 10 May. Among the catalogued bulls are 56 qualifiers for Welsh Beef Quality Improvement Scheme and nine bulls qualifying for the NI Beef Quality Improvement initiative. “I’ll be looking out for bulls that suit the commercial man,” he says. “They will have plenty of length, good tops and hind quarters, and that essential locomotion.” He adds: “Welsh suckler men are becoming increasingly aware that Charolais crosses are consistently reaching target weight within the shortest period of time and most efficiently. It’s a fact that will become more and more apparent in the run up to 2012 when the current payments cease. In future, these men will depend on the cattle themselves to deliver a profitable beef enterprise.” Charolais superior performance efficiency and its commercial strength in the marketplace were the key factors which led Mr Boden to swap his commercial suckler cows for a pure Charolais herd at Mellor Hall, Stockport. “We’d used Charolais as our suckler herd’s terminal sire for 15 years simply because of its ability to deliver calves with that unbeatable weight for age; we were rearing and finishing bulls to 800kg target finishing weight in less than 16 months,” he explains. “We began to realize the growing demand from other commercial producers seeking a slice of the action and decided to establish our Sportsmans herd as an added value enterprise producing Charolais bulls for the top end of the commercial beef sector, dairy producers and other pedigree breeders.” Scale and muscling have been among the key selection criteria within the Sportsman herd which is managed on pure commercial grounds. Current herd sires include the 10,000gns Balnuith Unicorn and the 55,000gns Thrunton Voldemort, owned jointly with Flintshire based vet, Esmor Evans. “Voldemort is the most complete Charolais bull I have ever seen, he has scale, length and tremendous fleshing ability. His calves are looking very promising.” Mr Boden adds: “I truly believe that Charolais is the breed for the future. Charolais crosses demonstrate the highest growth rates, they’re easy fleshing, easy calving and their quiet temperament makes them easy to manage. The cattle speak for themselves.”
