MANDATORY BULL SIRE VERIFICATION PRIOR TO SALE It will be mandatory requirement for all bulls over the age of 10 months (whether it be at foot or single) sold though Society sales, to be DNA Sire verified. For bulls under 10 months of age when sold with their dam, the purchaser has three months to DNA sire verify the calf if he wishes, at his expense. If, after three months from the sale, the sire is proven to be incorrect, there is no claim against the breeder. The reason why these extra parentage checks are being carried out is two fold. Firstly there have been several incorrect parentages found which can be very costly for the breeder, and secondly to ensure the correct parentage is recorded for genetic evaluation purposes. Incorrect parentage may be recorded quite inadvertently when bulls are swapped over, it may be an incorrect straw of semen is used, or a clerical error may record the wrong bull. At £15 + VAT hair sample is very good value for peace of mind. The bull sale DNA sampling bags will be differentiated from the routine sampling bags, and will be available by contacting the BCCS either by email or telephone, and order the bags which are required for the relevant sales. The names of the bulls entered for the particular sales will be recorded on the hair sampling bags. A bull is DNA sire verified only once in its life time. WEATHERBYS
ARE PREPARED TO HOLD HAIR SAMPLE FOR DNA TESTING AT A LATER DATE BVD VACCINATIONS AT SALES Charolais members should be aware that ALL Charolais cattle forward at BCCS auspices sales from 1st January 2011 are to be double vaccinated against BVD (Bovine Viral Diarrhaea) For herds which are in a CHeCS approved health scheme and are BVD accredited they do not have to be BVD check tested, but must be fully BVD vaccinated. For the herds which are not BVD accredited, then potential sale cattle should be BVD antigen tested negative, and given the first BVD vaccination on the same day as the blood test is taken. If the BVD antigen test is negative, the animals should then be given the second vaccination 3-4 weeks later. IMPORTANT - Do not vaccinate cattle just prior to the sales as immunity to BVD will not have built up sufficiently. CATTLE NOT FULLY VACCINATED FOR BVD WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ENTRY TO THE AUCTION CENTRE For those Charolais members requiring information on joining a CHeCs approved Cattle Health Scheme, the details for the available schemes are as follows: Cattle Health Schemes licensed by CHeCS www.checs.co.uk
