Charolais Young Breeders Stockjudging Final
Held at Gretna House Farm by kind permission of Mr & Mrs Alasdair
Houston
On Saturday 3rd July 2010
Sponsored by IGENITY and the British Charolais Cattle Society

The Charolais Young Breeders stock judging competition was a most memorable event with 36 competitors travelling the length and breadth of the UK to Gretna House Farm.

With the demise of the Royal Show the competition was re-invented to be not only a stock judging event but also an educational day for the Young Breeders.

Mr Houston together with his stockman John Morton provided four classes of Charolais. The classes to be judged were young bulls, 2 year old heifers, heifers with calves at foot, and dry cows, which were placed by the master judge Peter Vasey.

Following the stock judging were six speakers and demonstrators. Nick Munce from Igenity talked about the benefits of Genetic DNA testing. Iain Millar from the Lochend Herd talked about selection and preparation of cattle for the Show ring and did a practical demonstration on making a halter. Ian Pritchard from SAC Cattle Heath Scheme talked about improving herd health. Willie Wilson gave a demonstration of ultrasound scanning for eye muscle area, back fat and marbling. Gavin Hill from SAC gave a report on the progress of the SAC Charolais herd, and Seth Wareing from Keenans, talked about cow nutrition pre and post calving.

After the demonstrators and speakers the young breeder’s eligible for the Canadian trip gave their reasons to the master judge and Iain Millar followed by the presentation of prizes. Please see below for the results.

At the conclusion of the day the British Charolais Cattle Society paid tribute to Igenity as the major sponsor for the Charolais Young Breeders Section. Mr and Mrs Houston for hosting the day and providing excellent hospitality. The master judge Peter Vasey, and Vanessa Vasey and Lucy Houston for their help with the scoring. We would also like to thank all of the speakers and presenters, and last but not least the competitors and their drivers who attended the event.
