DNA FROM HAIR ROOTS

All Sires being used for Pedigree use should be DNA Typed.  The Charolais office provide pre-printed bags with the animals details.  The hair must be placed in the bag and returned to the Office along with the fee of £29.38 inc VAT.

Hair roots provide excellent source material for DNA analysis, however in order to avoid repeat requests, a number of precautions must be taken when collecting hair root samples:

1. It is essential that hair sample must contain root follicles as it is the follicles that contain the DNA and not the hair itself.

2. A minimum of 30 hairs should be sampled, preferably from the back of the neck and shoulder blade area.

3. It is vital that the hair is completely dry and as clean as possible.

4. When more than one animal is to be sampled extreme care must be taken to avoid contamination of hair root from one animal to another.

5. For semen samples, after thawing, place one straw of semen in the packet provided, seal and send immediately to the Society Office.

If you require a bag for DNA please contact the office with the animals name and herd book number.  A DNA Bag will then be forwarded onto you.
